Chapter 465: 453 Chapter Unnecessary Waste
Yang Yi counted, there were a total of seventeen people sitting there, plus two inspecting the engine made it nineteen, and with Alexander, the Aurora Mercenary Corps had exactly twenty members.Next to those seated was a makeshift table, where food had been placed. Yang Yi saw that it was fried chicken and fries, with the main dish being baked flatbread, and there was also a white metal insulated barrel on the ground.
Alexander seemed very familiar with everything, as he lifted the lid of the insulated barrel, and a mist immediately rose up, revealing that there was still half a barrel’s worth of ice cream inside.
Casually taking a bowl from the table, Alexander scooped a spoonful of ice cream into it from the barrel’s large spoon and then handed the ice cream to Kate.
"Try it, the ice cream here is really good."
Kate smiled sweetly at Alexander, took the ice cream, and said with a smile, "Thank you, you’re such a gentleman."
Alexander bowed slightly, then took a spoon and said, "It’s very clean."
Kate tasted a bit of the ice cream and then nodded repeatedly, "It’s very delicious! Really, it’s amazing."
Yang Yi was also getting hungry, but he didn’t want to start with ice cream. However, Alexander wasn’t as gentlemanly with the other guys, casually gesturing towards the table, "Just in time for a meal, help yourselves."
Yang Yi picked up a piece of fried chicken, which was still warm, and then found it unexpectedly delicious.
"Not bad at all."
After muttering his approval, Yang Yi quickly finished his chicken piece.
Alexander sat down on a chair, he didn’t eat fried chicken, but scooped himself some ice cream. He then called out to the two inspecting the engine, "How’s it going?"
"Not good!"
One of them turned his head to answer Alexander and shook his head, "It’s the same problem, we need to replace parts, but we don’t have time for a major overhaul."
"Can it make it to Kiev?"
"There’s a seventy percent chance there won’t be a problem."
Alexander immediately said, "That’s fine then, worst case we’ll just fly with three engines."
Yang Yi pointed at the aircraft, "It looks very dirty from the outside, there’s a lot of dust, shouldn’t we clean it off?"
Yang Yi realized he had asked a silly question as soon as he finished speaking; once the plane is airborne, even substandard paint could be blown off, let alone the mere dust.
"It’ll blow off."
Alexander said nonchalantly, before turning to Justin, "Hey, shouldn’t we check in with the States to see what’s going on?"
Justin was also hungry. With one hand, he hurriedly took a quick bite, and with the other, he struggled to pull out the satellite phone. He placed it on the table, dialed a number, then picked it up and said, "Hello, how are things on your end?"
Justin quickly put down the phone and said, "We’re still at Philadelphia International Airport, doing pre-flight preparations."
Alexander raised his eyebrows, "Are you sure it’s our Flight 176 we’re looking for, and not another 176?"
Justin said dismissively, "I can only do this much; keep an eye on the only United Airlines Flight 176. If there’s another plane impersonating it, I’m sorry, I can’t watch over every airport in the United States where a Boeing 747 can take off and land."
Alexander shrugged his shoulders and said nothing, but Justin continued, "Are more of you coming?"
"Someone else is coming and should be here in about two hours, definitely in time."
Justin then gestured towards the people sitting nearby and said, "You surely brought the right clothes, didn’t you? I might have forgotten to remind you that you need to wear clothes that Americans usually wear, use their weapons, and preferably have a uniform attire."
Alexander laughed, "You don’t need to remind us of this. We, of course, know what to do."
Justin looked at the large plane nearby and asked, "Did you fill it up with fuel?"
Alexander looked at the two pilots and shouted, "Is the tank filled up?"
"Half full, definitely enough fuel."
Justin frowned and asked, "Why fill it halfway and not completely?"
Alexander glanced at Justin and said, "A half-full tank allows faster takeoff."
"Oh, right, we might need to take off by force."
Justin stopped asking questions and began to concentrate on eating.
After Yang Yi had his fill, he also tried the ice cream and found it really tasted good. Then, he started to casually chat with Kate and Chris.
There were several dozens of people gathered, but they clearly belonged to three distinct groups. The people from the Aurora Mercenary Corps started discussing trivial matters as soon as Yang Yi and others arrived. Yang Yi also noticed a detail: none of these people called out others by their names, nor did they mention any specific places.
As the idiom goes, a tiny clue reveals the general trend; these details showed that the individuals from the Aurora Mercenary Corps were very conscious about secrecy.
Two hours later, four cars arrived and stopped at a distance. Then, fifteen people got out, most of them carrying bags, but the bags appeared small enough for personal items only, and Yang Yi could tell they weren’t big enough for weapons.
Among the newcomers was Pasanin, who, besides Alexander, was the only other acquaintance of Yang Yi’s in Aurora, but Pasanin did not greet him, just nodding in his direction.
The new arrivals seemed quite aloof from their comrades; there were no hugs or playful scuffles, as though the people from Aurora Mercenary Group hadn’t been scattered around the world without seeing each other for a long time, but rather had just separated yesterday.
Yang Yi and his group found it rather boring, and so did Justin, who soon joined the small circle of the three of them.
After sitting down with Yang Yi and the others, Justin whispered, "Have you noticed? The Nordics have faces frozen stiff; even here, they can’t thaw out. Look at them, life seems so joyless."
Justin’s joke was as cold as the atmosphere, but Yang Yi and his two companions had no choice but to chat with Justin.
The state of boredom lasted until the evening. The Aurora people simply sat in their chairs without seeking a place to rest, and Yang Yi’s group had no choice but to stay put in their chairs as well, thankfully, dinner was good. Although it was delivered by car, the roast lamb was delicious.
By 11 p.m., Justin was dozing in his chair, struggling to fall asleep when a sudden phone call shattered the quiet.
Justin quickly picked up the call, then instantly perked up, exclaiming loudly, "Hey guys, Flight 176 has taken off, with no passengers, and full of fuel!"
Having no passengers meant that United Airlines Flight 176 wasn’t operating a regular flight, and being fully fueled suggested that the plane was prepared for a long-distance flight. This is because, for short repositioning flights, such an aircraft would never take off fully fueled; the greater weight increases fuel consumption, which for an airline company, is an unnecessary waste.
