Chapter 442: Chapter 430: Don’t Make Decisions for Me
Yang Yi couldn’t understand Ukrainian, which was very troublesome for him. Although he had been trying hard to learn Ukrainian and Russian, achieving barrier-free communication in a short time seemed unlikely.
Jethro suddenly said in English, loudly, "Is there anyone else in this house? Please bring them here, thank you."
Paul grabbed a woman by the neck and pushed her into the bedroom.
The man sitting on the bed became extremely agitated, yelling and trying to get up, but Brian simply punched him back down onto the bed.
Jethro spread his hands and said something to the man on the bed in Ukrainian with a smile, then suddenly stretched out his hand toward Yang Yi.
So when Jethro suddenly extended his hand toward him, Yang Yi still couldn’t figure out what Jethro wanted to do.
"I’ll borrow your gun, thank you."
Yang Yi was somewhat confused, but Brian had already drawn his gun and handed it to Jethro, and at that point, the man on the bed, looking greatly alarmed, scrambled up and lunged toward Jethro.
With his left hand, Jethro took the gun and with a swift upward swing of his right hand, delivered a thump to the man’s chin. Then he abruptly aimed the gun at the girl Paul had pushed in.
In fact, it was a girl, probably only sixteen or seventeen years old, wearing just a thin silk pajama, standing there shivering with her arms wrapped around herself.
Jethro aimed the gun at the girl, then with a regretful smile, he pulled the trigger.
"I..."
Yang Yi couldn’t help but step forward, but it was too late. After a burst of blood mist erupted from the girl’s head, she fell forward onto the bed.
The woman on the bed screamed and rushed to check on her daughter, and then Jethro fired another shot, killing the woman on the bed.
Immediately after, Jethro aimed the gun at the man, fired, but this time he didn’t shoot the head, he shot the man’s chest. When he noticed that the man was still writhing, he fired another shot.
Jethro walked up to the bed, placed his hand on the man’s neck, and waited for a while, then nodded and said, "Okay, he’s dead."
Jethro flipped the gun in his hand, gripped the barrel, offered the handle back to Brian, and said with a smile, "Thank you for your gun, it’s a nice one, really nice."
Brian took the gun, spoke in a grave tone, "You’re welcome."
Yang Yi was still a bit shocked, for he hadn’t expected Jethro to shoot and kill everyone after a few words. He thought Jethro had drawn the gun to threaten the man.
"Just killed them like that?"
Jethro looked at Yang Yi and then shrugged, "What else could I have done?"
"I thought you were going to talk to him, I thought you were going to threaten him, to scare him..."
"Oh, no, we came here specifically to kill his entire family to set an example for others. Since we decided to kill his entire family, why bother talking too much to a dead man? Too much talk isn’t good, little brother, haven’t you noticed that the villains in movies always die because they talk too much? We are the villains, you need to realize that. So if you don’t want to die a talkative villain’s death, you had better act decisively."
Patting Yang Yi on the shoulder, Jethro said with a smile, "All right, we should get going."
When they got to the car, Jethro exhaled and asked, "We’re done for today. Should we find a place to rest before going back to Kyiv, or shall we go back now?"
"Let’s just go back," Yang Yi said.
"Alright, then I’ll drive; you’re already very tired, buddy—don’t be polite."
Jethro opened the car door and climbed into the driver’s seat. After starting the car, he turned his head and smiled at Yang Yi, "Get some sleep; when you wake up, you can take over the driving."
Yang Yi truly did fall asleep.
By dawn, the car had returned to Kyiv, and Yang Yi and his companions had returned to their residence.
Living with Jethro inevitably made many things inconvenient, but to protect Jethro, it was not possible to live separately.
The exhausted group went back, had a quick meal, and immediately went to sleep, not waking up until noon.
After lunch, Jethro was still dealing with matters in his room, while Yang Yi and the others were free to move around in their own space.
Yang Yi found Brian.
"You knew what Jethro was going to do, so that’s why you gave him your pistol first, didn’t you?"
Brian nodded slightly and said, "Yes."
Yang Yi let out a sigh and whispered, "I didn’t know Jethro was going to kill someone. I thought he was going to threaten that person with the gun because he didn’t look like someone who would kill, but I never expected he would be the first to kill that girl."
Brian said calmly, "Do you have any thoughts about it?"
Yang Yi gave a wry smile and said, "It’s a bit hard to accept. Seeing a young girl die in front of me is very difficult to accept."
Brian spoke in a low voice, "So, if you could have understood what Jethro was saying, would you have stopped him?"
Yang Yi shook his head and said, "No, I just find it hard to accept. But I’m not some hero with an overwhelming sense of justice. Brian, given my background and experiences, indiscriminately killing innocent people is unacceptable. So, it’s normal for me to find it hard to accept that someone would kill an entire family over a disagreement."
Brian said gravely, "It wasn’t over a disagreement; it was about a conflict of interests."
Yang Yi nodded and said, "I understand. Of course I understand it was a conflict of interests between Jethro and the man who died. Arms dealers aren’t maniacs; without a motive, they don’t kill randomly, let alone drive hundreds of kilometers in the middle of the night to commit a murder. I just find it hard to accept, but I wouldn’t have stopped it."
Yang Yi pointed to himself and said, "Don’t you understand? Because I have compassion, I find it hard to accept Jethro’s act of killing a whole family. It’s normal to have compassion, but having compassion doesn’t mean I would choose to be a hero and stop Jethro. I know who I am and what I’m doing, so I won’t do anything stupid."
Brian looked at Yang Yi and said sternly, "Good."
"One can’t help being influenced by the company one keeps."
Yang Yi spoke this sentence in Chinese because he couldn’t express it appropriately in English.
Yang Yi looked at Brian and said quietly, "I just want to tell you, Brian, that it’s normal for me to have compassion, but I won’t let my compassion put us at risk. Jethro came to me to borrow a gun and you gave it to him; that wasn’t great. I know what you’re worried about, but I want to tell you not to worry. I know what to do."
Brian spoke softly, "What if Jethro didn’t do it himself but asked you to pull the trigger?"
Yang Yi replied without hesitation, "I would have shot. Because I’m playing the role of a ruthless mercenary. If this mercenary shouldn’t be soft, then I definitely won’t be."
Brian nodded and spoke quietly, "I’m sorry; it seems I underestimated you. Seeing your expression at that moment, I really was worried you would stop Jethro. But since you know what to do, I will never make decisions for you again."
