Chapter 375: Chapter 363: Withstanding the Test

Would Gary Keene believe Yang Yi’s words? The answer was impossible.

If Gary Keene believed Yang Yi’s nonsense, he would be a complete idiot and utterly unfit to be a member of MI5.

But Yang Yi had to talk nonsense nevertheless, even though he knew Gary Keene would never believe it, and as for Gary Keene, he wouldn’t make any judgment on Yang Yi’s words. He would only jot them down and verify them later. But for now, Gary Keene would not believe a single word Yang Yi said.

What Yang Yi needed to do was to fabricate lies that were credible enough to be worth verifying by MI5, not those so obviously fake that they wouldn’t even garner interest for investigation.

Therefore, most of what Yang Yi said was true, except for the fact that he was sent by the CIA leadership, the rest could be said to be true.

Gary Keene was in thought, while Yang Yi looked at him with a serious expression. After a long while, Gary Keene said in a deep voice, "Who is your superior, and who is the mole?"

The United Kingdom was a staunch ally of the United States, and the intelligence agencies of both countries shared certain intelligence. The cooperation between the CIA, MI5, and MI6 was limited to that.

It was no surprise to Gary Keene that MI5 was interested in the CIA’s internal strife because MI5 and the CIA were not partners but real competitors. The intelligence war between the United States and the United Kingdom was no less intense than with any other country.

"I can’t say."

Now, Yang Yi began to seem rather defiant. He said very seriously, "I’ve told you everything I can, but what I cannot reveal, I will not."

Gary Keene smiled and let out a sigh, saying, "Our conversation has been a good start. I can’t verify the truth of what you’ve told me right now, but I’m really getting interested. I think you are an honest person, and it would be in your interest to be completely truthful."

Yang Yi closed his eyes and sighed lightly, "But if I do, it would be a fate worse than death."

"And if you don’t speak, you think there will be no consequences? You’re severely injured; it’s perfectly normal for the rescue attempt to fail, right? Imagine this: we torture you until you reveal everything we’re interested in, and then announce you died of your injuries. Do you think anyone will mourn you?"

Yang Yi seemed very pained, then he suddenly yelled out, "Doctor! Doctor!"

"Stop shouting. There are four people guarding the door of this ward. Are you still hoping for a dedicated doctor to save you?"

Yang Yi’s sweat began to pour down as Gary Keene did not give him a chance to catch his breath and said in a heavy voice, "Tell me! Who is your superior? Who is the mole?"

Yang Yi still didn’t speak.

Gary Keene smiled and said, "I know what you’re thinking. You’re still hoping X can save you, but I can tell you definitively that it’s not going to happen. Now let me tell you the truth. The police already announced you were dead shortly after you were brought to the hospital. So, you’re already a dead man. X will only be looking for your body in the morgue of the police station, and he will find your body there, but..."

Gary Keene slowed down his pace and said, "Speak everything you know, and I can assure you that you won’t die. All bodies found at the scene will be cremated to destroy evidence, and this matter was always meant to be handled discreetly. As long as all the bodies are dealt with, you’re free to go wherever you like."

Yang Yi swallowed painfully, then he closed his eyes tightly, remaining silent.

"Also, if you tell me what I want to know, then I’ll give you all your detailed information. You say you’ve forgotten everything about your childhood, I’ll just temporarily believe that’s true, Yang Yi, or should I call you Mike, a person’s childhood is the happiest time in their lives, it’s truly sad to forget your own childhood, and I have everything you want to know. Since you’re bound to be forced to spill what you know sooner or later, why not speak now? That way, at least you’ll get something in return."

Yang Yi reopened his eyes, then he bit down on his teeth in agony and said in a low voice, "Aaron!"

"Hmm?"

Yang Yi said softly, "The mole’s name is Aaron; actually, I didn’t know at the start, but the person who led us revealed this name to me before he died. He got the evidence; the mole is Aaron. In fact, I don’t even know who Aaron truly is. All I know is that he’s one of the high-ups in the CIA, that’s it!"

Gary Keene slightly furrowed his brow, but his tone didn’t change, he continued slowly, "The mole is called Aaron, so who sent you?"

"I don’t know, I only know he’s called X, Mr. Keene, and no matter how many times you interrogate me, that’s the only answer I can give. My status isn’t high enough to know too many secrets, I’m just an... insignificant person, that I even know the mole is named Aaron is already a miracle."

Gary Keene sighed and said, "I believe what you’re saying, and I will verify it. If what you say is true, then you won’t die. Now tell me another thing—who was the KGB you met with."

"I don’t know, really don’t know, I only heard a term."

"What is it?"

"Black Devil."

"Black Devil? Are you sure you’re not mistaken?"

Yang Yi said in a low voice, "Absolutely not, the one leading us said that dealing with the Black Devil had to be done with extreme caution, but he only said that much. Ah, the deal with the Black Devil was for the evidence that would reveal the mole’s identity, but I wasn’t involved in the deal itself. I was just providing security on the perimeter, though I know there’s only one Black Devil."

Gary Keene immediately said, "Spill the details of the deal!"

"It was in a restroom of a shopping center near Hyde Park, but I was waiting in the car. It was shortly before our attack, our boss was Charles, the one who died. He went to make the trade, how much it was for I don’t know, after the deal he came back to the car. I don’t know if the deal was successful, but I guess it was since Charles seemed very happy; however, not long after, we were attacked."

As he spoke, Yang Yi took a painful breath, then he said softly, "Now can you tell me what’s going on with this name Yang Yi you mentioned? I really, really want to know what my childhood was like, please."

Yang Yi was truly in pain, for he hadn’t yet recovered from his injuries, and speaking so much was not something he should have done.

Gary Keene stood up and said indifferently, "You should rest now, don’t worry. When you’re in better condition and we can talk again, I’ll tell you. For now, please rest for a while."

Yang Yi looked pained and angry, but Gary Keene still walked away without looking back.

From the bottom of his heart, Yang Yi let out a sigh of relief; no matter what, he had gotten through the first hurdle. Even if they needed to verify the truth of his words, it would take some time. The nonsense he’d spouted was a mix of truth and lies, but it was able to withstand scrutiny.

As for the consequences of whatever he had revealed, Yang Yi couldn’t care less. If Aaron really was the mole, Yang Yi would rather the whole world knew about it.
