Chapter 374: Chapter 362 Nonsense
Pretending to have amnesia is quite boring, especially when trying to fool MI5 with such an act, which is essentially an insult to their intelligence.
Because once torture is employed, all of Yang Yi’s pretenses will become meaningless, and playing dumb will only serve to add some humor to the situation.
However, at present, Yang Yi can afford to pretend to have amnesia because he is a wounded patient. Even if MI5 wants to interrogate him, they will have to wait until after his body recovers enough to withstand their coercive methods, at the very least.
Moreover, Yang Yi has a favorable condition on his side. He went missing at the age of eleven. MI5 might grasp his situation in the United Kingdom, but they have no idea where he has been during these past ten-plus years after his disappearance.
Now that Yang Yi speaks with an American accent, is familiar with numerous American colloquialisms, and is well-informed about the CIA, along with Charles and Mike who were among the dead at the scene and had been with the CIA, it’s very likely that even the dead enemies might have been from the CIA.
Considering these advantageous factors, Yang Yi felt that he might be able to get past security by pretending to be a CIA agent. Of course, this was only temporary, as he was aware that he wouldn’t be able to withstand any severe methods if MI5 resolved to employ them.
But if he could buy himself some time by deceiving them, then he was certainly going to take that chance.
Unfortunately, Gary Keene was not so easy to fool. He had no interest in hearing Yang Yi’s nonsense.
"Amnesia? Interesting, I haven’t heard anyone use that excuse for a long time, a rather ridiculous excuse. What are you trying to say, that you’ve lost your memory because your lungs were injured? Is that it?" he asked.
"No, no, no, please, I didn’t mean to insult your intelligence. If I did, I would be insulting my own intelligence as well. What I am saying is that I’ve lost my memory from the time I was a child until I went to the training camp, but I remember very clearly what just happened. Trust me, Mr. Keene, I really want to know about my own past. If what you’re saying is true, then we could really exchange information."
Gary Keene glanced at his watch and said, "I’m short on time. If you’re unwilling to cooperate, I’ll have to move you to another location to speak, and it would be unfortunate, but accidents happen, don’t they?"
Yang Yi took a breath and said, "Alright, alright, I’ll start. We came to London on a secret mission but were attacked; two of us died, and it seems like five of the enemies are dead."
"Your identities."
Yang Yi was silent for a moment, then he said in a serious tone, "Look, pal, I know I’m a dead man. There’s nothing left for me to cling to in this situation, but I still want to try to save my own life. Mr. Keene, if I tell you everything I know, can you guarantee my life and not leave me a fool? We both know what befalls those who fall into the hands of intelligence agencies, but I believe I can still be saved since I’m the only one who knows some secrets."
Gary Keene was moved, feeling that Yang Yi was truly sincere.
"Very well, I can assure you that you’ll survive and not end up a fool—I give you my word. Now, tell me everything you know," he promised.
Yang Yi hesitated for a moment, then said in a low voice, "Please, tell me about those five people first—the ones who died. Oh, and if you don’t mind, could you tell me what day it is? How long have I been unconscious?"
Gary Keene took a breath and then said a bit angrily, "I am the one asking the questions here, not you. Understand your position. I ask, you answer. No counter-questions, or else I will not be questioning you here any longer."
Yang Yi said in a serious tone, "Tell me, Mr. Keene. I am asking you to please answer this one question for me first, and then I’ll be able to explain everything to you. Firstly, the five dead were sent by the CIA, but they were not CIA agents."
Gary Keene said softly, "CIA..."
Yang Yi let out a sigh and said, "You could try to verify this with the CIA, though of course, they will deny it, just like how MI6 spies would never be acknowledged. I too am a spy, I belong to the CIA, but of course the CIA will never admit to that."
Gary Keene said indifferently, "You admit you’re a spy."
Yang Yi smiled and said, "Have I ever denied it?"
"Very well, your purpose?"
"Mr. Keene, we are not enemies, really, we are not! Please do not interrogate me with presuppositions, we can actually have a calm conversation right now. There will be plenty of time for your interrogation experts to verify the truth of every word I say, we both know that, but can we have a serious talk right now? Because what I have to say is very serious, and listening calmly will benefit us both!"
Yang Yi’s emotions seemed very complex; he was sincere, yet there was also a sense of helplessness and anger, and he was quite agitated.
After watching Yang Yi for a long time, Gary Keene nodded and said, "Alright, you can say what you want to say."
Yang Yi let out a sigh and said, "I really don’t know where to begin. Let me think... uh, I’m not really a person of the CIA, but I was trained by them. That might be hard for you to understand; it’s like I’m an informal staff member who hasn’t officially started working."
"I can understand."
"Good, Mr. Keene, I was assigned to come to London to investigate a matter. I can’t tell you who my boss is, you can call him X. We were sent to London to investigate a high-ranking member of the CIA, whom X suspects has been a mole planted by the Soviet Union since the Cold War. Therefore, X dispatched a former CIA member to lead the four of us, who were informally employed, to London to meet with a KGB member from the Soviet Union. Why use a retired agent to lead us to London? Because X couldn’t deploy real agents here without the mole noticing."
Gary Keene listened intently, but Yang Yi stopped mid-sentence, gasping rapidly for breath and appearing in great pain.
Yang Yi wasn’t genuinely suffering; he had simply run out of story to tell. He needed to catch his breath and think hard about how to continue his tale.
After waiting for Yang Yi to catch his breath, Gary Keene frowned and said, "So what you’re saying is, this is a CIA internal strife?"
Yang Yi exhaled and said in a low voice, "It’s not strife, it’s rooting out a traitor, mate. Clearly, the mole has discovered our mission’s intent and has made a preemptive move."
"Then, have you obtained key evidence?"
"We have, but whether the mole has got to the evidence, I don’t know. First, please tell me how long I’ve been unconscious?"
Gary Keene replied indifferently, "You’ve been unconscious for two days; it’s not a very long time, but your companions had ample time to move. Perhaps, they are trying to rescue you."
Yang Yi smiled and said, "Don’t joke, I’m just cannon fodder. The CIA will not recover me through diplomatic channels, they will not acknowledge my existence, you’re very aware of that."
After saying that, Yang Yi added with a sense of resignation, "We didn’t come here to cause destruction, nor did we intend to do anything to the United Kingdom, mate. Coming to London was merely due to the convenience of operating in a large city, nothing more."
