Chapter 373: Chapter 361 Amnesia
Yang Yi opened his eyes, but the intense light made him close them immediately again.
He narrowed his eyes to slits, slowly adapting to the stimulation of light as his consciousness gradually recovered.
When Yang Yi finally remembered what had happened before he passed out, the first thing he felt was an overwhelming joy.
In the end, he had survived.
When a lung is punctured, the injured lung compresses under atmospheric pressure into a mass that cannot breathe, but the pleural cavities on either side don’t communicate with each other; if only one lung is pierced by grenade shrapnel, the remaining uninjured lung can still breathe normally.
If the injured lung also suffered massive blood loss, whether or not it could sustain breathing was irrelevant, since death would swiftly follow.
Without massive blood loss, but without timely medical treatment, a punctured lung would still lead to death, and it would be a long and painful process.
Yang Yi’s lung had been pierced by grenade shrapnel, and he had also lost a lot of blood, which is why his condition had been so critical; however, in the end, he had still managed to survive.
Once Yang Yi’s brain regained the ability to think, his mind immediately began to whirl rapidly.
The oxygen mask strapped over his mouth, the medical equipment within his field of vision, and the faint noise from the vital sign monitoring devices made it clear to Yang Yi where he was.
He was in a hospital, in an intensive care unit.
With just a slight movement of his hand, Yang Yi felt the presence of handcuffs.
There was a hint of panic, Yang Yi could not help but feel nervous, because he understood his predicament—that his life had ultimately been saved by the police, but now he was also in their hands, or maybe worse.
But panic was pointless, what mattered was figuring out how to deal with the upcoming challenges.
Yang Yi slightly turned his head and saw the abbreviation on the ventilator, so he knew where he was.
Royal Brompton Hospital in the United Kingdom, the largest and best hospital specializing in heart and lung diseases, located in Chelsea, not far from Hyde Park.
Thus, there was a reason why Yang Yi had survived—being rushed to the nearest hospital as fast as possible, and the fact that this hospital was the best for pulmonary surgery, was one of the main reasons he had lived.
As Yang Yi contemplated his situation, the door to his room opened, and a doctor, a nurse, and a man in a suit—but wearing a mask—entered his room.
The person in doctor’s attire stood in front of Yang Yi, flipped his eyelids to check, then glanced at the monitoring equipment.
"Is he able to speak?"
The doctor hesitated, then nodded and said, "The patient has just awakened, and he can speak, but I do not recommend that he starts talking now. The patient is still very weak and has not yet passed the critical period."
The man in the suit nodded, and then said in a grave tone, "Okay, I understand. Please leave us for a moment, I have some questions for him, thank you."
The doctor said in a grave tone, "No, I strongly advise that the patient be allowed to rest, it is not the right time for questioning."
"Doctor! Please understand something; this man is a very dangerous criminal suspect, and I must question him as soon as possible, so please do not interfere with my work."
The doctor appeared somewhat defiant as he spoke in a firm voice, "Interrogating criminals is your job, but treating patients is mine. In my eyes, there’s no difference between suspects or ordinary people—they are all patients. You brought him here, and I’m the one who performed the surgery, so I am responsible for my patient until the end. I’ve said that he is not fit for interrogation right now. If you insist on questioning him, please, you’ll need to transfer him to another hospital."
The man in the suit seemed quite helpless. He took a deep breath and said, "Doctor, you are fulfilling your responsibility, and I am fulfilling mine. My duty is to protect this country. This person is extremely dangerous, and I need to ask him some questions right now. Also, this is not an interrogation, it’s crucial defense work. Please understand!"
The doctor did not particularly insist on his own point of view. He glanced at his watch and finally said, "You have five minutes. Once time is up, the questioning must stop. I will come when it’s time."
The doctor left with the nurse, and the man in the suit reached out and removed the breathing mask from Yang Yi’s face.
"Open your eyes; I know you’re awake."
Yang Yi immediately opened his eyes, the body-sign monitoring equipment leaving him no secrets, pretending to be unconscious was pointless.
The man in the suit stared blankly into Yang Yi’s eyes for a long time before he finally spoke.
"My name is Gary Keene, from the United Kingdom’s National Security Service."
Not many people had heard of the National Security Service of the United Kingdom, but it was also known by a more familiar name, MI5, also referred to as Security Service.
Compared to the widely known MI6, MI5 was less famous because it dealt with domestic counter-espionage in the UK and did not have a character like 007 to make it famous worldwide.
Indeed, the situation was worse than falling into the hands of the police – Yang Yi had fallen into the hands of MI5.
Starting by directly disclosing his identity was an effective way to pressure Yang Yi. Gary Keene then said seriously, "Now I have a few questions for you, and you need to answer me truthfully. It’s better for both of us, don’t you think, Yang Yi?"
Gary Keene stated Yang Yi’s real name, but Yang Yi was not overly surprised.
Fallen into the hands of MI5, and still thinking of keeping his real identity secret?
What a joke – let’s not forget that Yang Yi was born in London; as soon as Gary Keene disclosed his identity, Yang Yi knew that many of his secrets were no longer secrets.
But Yang Yi had no intention of easily admitting it.
"I’m not called Yang Yi; my name is Mike Smith."
Yang Yi spoke, with a thick American accent.
Gary Keene did not appear very angry; his voice just grew colder.
"Yang Yi, born in 1988 at Portland Maternity Hospital. In 1999, after your parents died suddenly, you disappeared. Time is precious, so I don’t want to waste it by laying out your full record. What I want to know now is what happened before you were brought to this hospital, who are you, and who were those people who died."
Yang Yi sighed, and then with a look of helplessness, he said, "YO, YO, man, you seem to know a lot about me, but I’m Mike Smith, and beyond that, I don’t know what else to say."
Gary Keene said coldly, "This is a hospital, and you’ve just woken up. If you’re not willing to cooperate, you’re going to regret it, I assure you."
Yang Yi had a pained expression as he looked at Gary Keene; after hesitating, he finally said, "Maybe what you’re saying is true, but I honestly don’t remember what my childhood was like. Perhaps you could recount what you know in detail? Hey, man, I’m pretty interested to hear you out because I’m curious about my own childhood too. Um, tell me about this name Yang Yi, and then I’ll tell you everything I know, alright? I do have to tell you one thing though – I’ve lost a large part of my memory. I know you may not believe me, but it’s the truth, so can we talk calmly and amicably, please?"
