Chapter 269 - 268 Breakthrough

Chapter 269: Chapter 268 Breakthrough

Yang Yi had always demanded of himself to act like a spy, training himself as one, too; direct combat was not his forte.

However, Yang Yi still had to bend down and sprint swiftly through the darkness; he needed to circle around and take out the enemy from behind.

Xiao Ran’s shooting was not bad, but she was unable to hit someone hiding behind a car, and what they needed now was a quick resolution— they couldn’t afford to let the enemy pin them down, especially with a helicopter hovering above. Even though shooting from a helicopter is harder than shooting on the ground, it only complicates things a bit.

In the United States, many people hunt from helicopters, and it’s not uncommon to see someone shoot a running wild boar from the sky.

For Xiao Ran and Yang Yi, the advantage lay in the darkness of the night; the helicopter had no searchlight or night vision equipment. Under these circumstances, even the most skilled gunmen in the helicopter wouldn’t be able to take them out as they would when hunting from a helicopter.

What needed to be clear was that Yang Yi and Xiao Ran could counter the ambush thanks to the protection of the night, and Zhang Yong drove his car around crazily because his speed was high and unpredictable, which made it hard for the helicopter to hit its target.

But if Xiao Ran and Yang Yi’s positions were exposed and spotted by someone in the helicopter, it would still be far too dangerous, even if it was much more difficult to shoot than in daylight.

Understanding this, Yang Yi knew why he had to risk running behind the enemy— because only by doing so could they take out the enemy in the shortest time possible.

Yang Yi ran fast; the training he got in prison endowed him with a robust physique.

But as for his shooting the skill, Yang Yizhen really didn’t want to comment—if only he were a better shot, he wouldn’t have hesitated to fire after making his way around.

The two of them got out of the car and moved to the other side of the vehicle, out of Xiao Ran’s line of fire. One hid behind the car’s bonnet, raising the gun above his head to shoot wildly towards Xiao Ran’s location, while the other lay inside the car, only his legs visible outside.

The car door was open, so the interior reading light was on. With the help of the faint light, Yang Yi could see what they were doing.

The person who got in from the passenger side tried to turn the car around, and he did succeed. The car roared, turned slowly, and its headlights shone towards Xiao Ran.

Seeing the enemy’s movement, Yang Yi felt a rush of excitement because their need to use the car’s headlights to find Xiao Ran meant they didn’t have night vision gear.

Yang Yi ran fast, but made no sound, and even if there were noises, they were drowned out by the intense gunfire.

Xiao Ran was firing at the person who was crouching on the seat and turning the steering wheel. Although she couldn’t see, once she noticed the front of the car turning, she kept firing at the driver’s side, hoping that the bullets would pierce through the door and hit the person turning the car.

It wasn’t a godsend opportunity, but the fierce gunfight indeed covered Yang Yi’s movements.

After turning the corner, Yang Yi was less than fifty meters away from the person hiding behind the car. He used the car’s body as cover to remain unseen by the enemy, and he quickly approached the back of the car.

Yang Yi charged from behind the car; the enemy, who was crouched behind the bonnet changing magazines, finally saw Yang Yi and yelled in alarm, aiming his freshly reloaded rifle at Yang Yi.

They were almost face to face—if he missed at this range, Yang Yi truly deserved to die.

Yang Yi raised his hand and fired not just one shot, instinctively aiming his pistol at the enemy. His first shot struck the enemy in the head.

Xiao Ran had already stopped shooting, because she could of course see Yang Yi’s position. To prevent friendly fire, she had paused her gunfire.

Yang Yi rushed to the passenger-side door, grabbed the enemy’s leg, and fiercely dragged him backward while yelling, "Don’t move..."

The enemy lying in the car seat ignored Yang Yi’s shouting, forcefully kicked his legs to break free from Yang Yi’s grasp, and flipped over, aiming his gun at Yang Yi.

Yang Yi really wanted to capture a living witness to question, but he truly had no chance now.

Having no choice but to fire first and kill the incapacitated enemy, Yang Yi shouted, "I’ve taken care of it!"

Catching his breath, a shaken Yang Yi dragged the now dead person out of the car, then delivered one more shot to the driver, who was already dead and leaning back in the seat.

Xiao Ran aimed her gun at the car that didn’t stop but drove away, and now the car had finally halted, parking about three or four hundred meters away.

Bathed in the light, Xiao Ran swiftly changed her position and once again lay on the ground.

Aiming at the distant car, Xiao Ran quickly spotted a red dot that shouldn’t have been there above the car’s hood, and she decisively fired, killing the enemy who had shown his head in one shot.

Yang Yi inspected the car, which was an old Ford pickup. Of the three men inside, the driver had been killed by Xiao Ran at the outset, and the remaining two had been taken out by him. All three were fully armed, two of them holding M4 rifles, and there was another M4 rifle tossed on the back seat.

Picking up the rifle from the car seat, Yang Yi then aimed at the car in the distance, but the gun was fitted with only a red dot sight, which made it impossible to see the several-hundred-meters-distant car that had now turned off its lights in the pitch-black night.

Just then, Xiao Ran shouted, "It seems there’s no one in the other car. Drive over and check it out. Do you have a walkie-talkie? Hand it over to me!"

Indeed, there was a walkie-talkie on the body, but both of Yang Yi’s shots had hit the enemy in the head, and the headset was covered in blood and brain matter, which looked disgusting.

Disconnecting the headset and grabbing two walkie-talkies, Yang Yi ran to the other side of the car, opened the door, dragged the body down, turned off the car lights, and then ran to Xiao Ran’s side with the walkie-talkies.

"Three walkie-talkies. Keep one on the original frequency to monitor enemy communications, and switch frequencies on the other two for our conversation."

Xiao Ran took a walkie-talkie and placed it in front of her, speaking with gravity, "You drive, I’ll stand in the truck bed. We’ll go to the side of that car to check it out. Be careful not to drive straight there. Circle around to approach. If there’s anyone left, I’ll be able to see them the moment they move."

As the helicopter was approaching from above, Yang Yi climbed back into the car to restart it, and Xiao Ran lay in the bed of the pickup truck, then they circled around the distant car.

Yang Yi kept himself well-concealed, fearful that there might still be an enemy who could hit him. After quickly circling the enemy’s other car, Xiao Ran communicated through the walkie-talkie, "There are only two people in this car, it’s clear!"

Having a walkie-talkie was convenient; there was no need to yell at the top of their lungs. Yang Yi sat up straight and drove toward Zhang Yong, who was still circling, and meanwhile, the helicopter continued its erratic flight above.
