Chapter 268: Chapter 267 Counter Ambush

Yang Yi pulled open the car door, then leaped out first, rolling twice on the ground before quickly getting up, bending over, and dashing a few steps to take cover behind some bushes.

The helicopter was getting closer, but it had no searchlights, and it was unknown whether it had night vision gear or not. If it didn’t, they wouldn’t be able to see him getting out of the car.

Yang Yi hid behind the bushes, while Xiao Ran did not roll. Zhang Yong slowed the car down a lot, and Xiao Ran ran a few steps with her gun before deliberately lying down on the ground.

The desert was very cold in the early morning.

Unable to suppress a shiver, Yang Yi saw Xiao Ran also take cover behind some bushes, so he sprinted to her side.

Xiao Ran mounted the thermal imaging night vision device on the scope, powered it on for a test, and whispered, "Everything’s working."

"Lucky you’re so well-prepared."

Yang Yi truly meant what he said.

Yang Yi relied on nothing but a knife when he left the house, but now that wasn’t of any use at all, whereas Xiao Ran brought many odds and ends and had to carry a big bag during their escape. Not long ago, Yang Yi still thought carrying a big bag all the time was cumbersome, but now, these miscellaneous accessories had come into play.

Xiao Ran placed her gun on the ground, but she didn’t lie down. Instead, she used a compact binocular to peer at the lit helicopter for a moment before saying in a low voice, "I can’t see anything clearly, I don’t know what kind of helicopter it is."

After putting down the binoculars, Xiao Ran turned to Yang Yi, "What are you doing next to me? Waiting for someone to mow us down together? Get out of here and keep an eye on our surroundings. If you spot anything unusual, just yell. They can’t hear us in such an open space."

Feeling somewhat embarrassed, Yang Yi replied, "Oh."

Zhang Yong drove away quickly but then turned around and started coming back after he’d gotten some distance from Yang Yi and the others. He was going to circle around to see if the enemy had any ground forces chasing them.

Yang Yi was actually not too far from Xiao Ran, only about ten meters away. He stood up and glanced into the distance, then looked up at the helicopter, saying, "The helicopter is heading towards Zhang Yong and the others. It seems they haven’t spotted us."

"That means they don’t have night vision. They’re chasing the lights. If that’s the case, the helicopter in the sky doesn’t pose much of a threat, as long as we turn off the lights."

Xiao Ran sounded quite heartened, and Yang Yi remarked with some emotion, "We’ve always been falling into traps before fighting our way out, but it’s different with Brother Yong. He can smell danger."

"He’s an old mercenary, come up through the ranks among mountains of corpses and seas of blood, experienced. We’ll be fine if we encounter these situations a few more times."

Yang Yi said self-deprecatingly, "I don’t want to encounter this again. Spies aren’t meant for this kind of thing."

"Like it’s up to you? Stop talking nonsense."

Yang Yi saw a light, and his heart tightened. He yelled loudly, "Light at eleven o’clock!"

Xiao Ran turned to look, stood up straight, and observed through the binoculars for a moment before shouting, "Cars, two of them, still far off."

After crouching down again, Xiao Ran shouted, "I don’t know if Zhang Yong can lure the enemy here. Even if he lures the enemy to this spot, it’s hard to fight if they’re too far away."

"How close do you need them?"

"Within two hundred meters, I’m confident. Beyond that, the car’s too fast, I can’t guarantee a quick elimination of the enemy."

Yang Yi thought for a moment and said, "Then I’ll act as bait to lure them over. We might even make the enemy stop their vehicle. Also, I don’t think there will be too many of them."

"Why?"

"It’s simple. Whether they’re coming from Las Vegas or Los Angeles, they couldn’t have driven here in time to block us. The enemies must have come by helicopter. How many can a helicopter carry? Maybe around a dozen at most. Since there are people on the helicopter, I think there wouldn’t be more than ten coming by ground."

Xiao Ran pondered for a moment and said, "Makes sense. Fewer enemies means they’ll be easier to deal with. Hey, this time, let’s collect their firearms and ammunition, especially the radios. They must have walkie-talkies or some kind of wireless communication systems. If we can take them, at least we won’t have to keep shouting."

The distance was quite far, so even though they saw the car lights, the vehicles wouldn’t arrive anytime soon.

Yang Yi looked at Zhang Yong’s car. Zhang Yong had been driving in circles and must have also noticed the two cars chasing them, so he deliberately drove in a straight line with the enemy and Yang Yi’s position.

Yang Yi and Xiao Ran just stood watching the cars’ movements when they noticed the two vehicles indeed turned and headed toward their position.

"They’re lured!"

Yang Yi shouted with some excitement, and Xiao Ran yelled, "Get down now, get ready."

Yang Yi didn’t draw his sword. What use would a sword be against people in moving cars? Now, he could only rely on his handgun.

But holding the gun, Yang Yi felt insecure. A sword could bring him a sense of safety, but a gun could not.

The two cars drew closer, but they were still not particularly near Yang Yi and Xiao Ran. The desert was vast and empty, with no roads yet everywhere was passable. The enemy’s two vehicles were about to pass at least five hundred meters to the left of Yang Yi and his team.

Xiao Ran shouted, "No, they’re too far!"

Yang Yi stood up, but in the darkness, even if he wanted to lure the enemy, it was impossible because they just couldn’t see him.

Yang Yi fired his gun in the direction of the cars. Hitting the enemy at that distance was certainly impossible; he only hoped to attract their attention with the bright flashes and the sound of gunfire.

The distance was too great; the sound of the gunshots couldn’t be heard, and nobody noticed the fleeting muzzle flashes.

Just then, Zhang Yong’s car made another turn and headed straight for them. The two cars that had been keeping an eye on Zhang Yong also started to turn, aiming to intercept Zhang Yong’s car at Yang Yi and Xiao Ran’s position.

Zhang Yong did well, Yang Yi immediately crouched down again, hiding behind some bushes.

Xiao Ran stood up, quickly ran across the ground, and lay down on a slightly elevated sand dune. This way, at least she didn’t have to shoot standing up.

The few hundred meters closed in an instant, but Xiao Ran still hadn’t fired. Just as the enemy’s cars came within less than a hundred meters of them, and Yang Yi was about to shout out of urgency, Xiao Ran finally fired.

Contrary to Yang Yi’s expectations, Xiao Ran didn’t shoot single shots but sprayed a burst of bullets out. After several "Dada dada" noises, Xiao Ran quickly moved her gun barrel, firing at the other car diagonally in front of her.

The sound of "dada dada" rang out, and another burst of bullets was fired.

One car accelerated and rushed straight ahead, while the other car came to an immediate halt. That’s when Xiao Ran yelled, "Take out the driver, we’re going to engage the enemy. I’ll cover you, circle around, and take out the enemies from behind!"
