Chapter 267 - 266 Ambush
Chapter 267: Chapter 266 Ambush
They exited from Highway 15 and entered a local road.
Once again, Boer had exposed their location, and it was best not to have any contact with anyone at this time. It would be preferable to circle the highway a few more times, but the car was running out of fuel. Now Yang Yi and his group were in the desert, unsure how far they would have to travel before finding the next fuel stop. Therefore, they could only refill their tank at the first gas station after leaving the highway, where they also took the opportunity to buy some food and water.
The road ran through the desert, where traffic was sparse, and although the road wasn’t very wide, its condition wasn’t too bad. However, driving was exhausting because the car Yang Yi had stolen was old, suffering from a typical issue of American old cars where the steering wheel was loose and tended to veer off course. If he didn’t constantly adjust the steering wheel, the car would soon wander off the road, so Yang Yi had to keep twisting the steering wheel, controlling its direction at all times.
Driving such a car was very tiring indeed.
Zhang Yong hadn’t slept, while Xiao Ran and Boer had both dozed off. When Yang Yi felt truly tired, he stopped the car on the side of the road and opened the rear door to wake up Boer, who was asleep in the backseat.
Boer opened his eyes and asked with a frightened expression, "What’s going on? Why have we stopped?"
"You drive. I’m a bit tired," Yang Yi said.
Boer replied in astonishment, "Me drive? No, I can’t..."
Yang Yi said coldly, "All three of us need to protect you, and right now you’re of no use at all. Do you want us to waste our precious energy on driving?"
Boer was stunned for a moment, then he quickly said, "Okay, I’ll drive. You take a rest."
Yang Yi moved to the backseat, and his head had barely touched the pillow when he fell straight asleep.
Yang Yi felt he had only just fallen asleep for a short while when Xiao Ran beside him woke him up.
Startled awake, Yang Yi asked in a low voice, "What’s up?"
The headlights of the car were off, and it was extremely dark outside, so dark that nothing could be seen inside the car either.
Zhang Yong, sitting in front of Yang Yi, said quietly, "We’re about to reach a place called Xima, where two roads intersect. We need to turn."
Still groggy, Yang Yi responded, "Then turn."
Zhang Yong said quietly, "We’ve already exposed our location. If the enemy is chasing us and hasn’t found us on the highway, they’ll definitely search along the two roads. It’s inevitable they’ll look around the signal. We stopped at the gas station for fuel. Just asking around will let them know which way we went, so I’m worried there might be an ambush waiting for us up ahead."
Yang Yi exhaled slowly, squinting into the darkness although he couldn’t see much, but he knew what the terrain by the road was like. Then he whispered, "We haven’t stopped all the way. Could the enemy really have set up a roadblock ahead of us so quickly?"
Zhang Yong whispered, "If the enemy has a helicopter, they could definitely get ahead of us on the road we must take. Detouring would also be detected. It’s impossible to drive in the desert without lights, and as soon as you turn them on, you can be spotted from afar."
"Helicopter?" whispered Yang Yi.
Zhang Yong replied irritably, "Of course, helicopters. How hard could it be to find one? No matter whether in Las Vegas or Los Angeles, how many private helicopters are there? Tourist rentals would work too. As long as you’re willing to pay, it’s not hard to find a helicopter."
Yang Yi exhaled, "What do we do now?"
After a moment of silence, Zhang Yong said in a low voice, "Still, we should go through the desert, take a big detour. If the enemy has indeed taken our necessary route, and they start shooting from a distance, we’re done for. But if we detour, they won’t be able to set up an accurate ambush. Even if they have a helicopter, it’s likely just a civilian one, and a few people shooting from a helicopter won’t pose much of a threat. So, we should make our way through the desert."
Yang Yi whispered, "Okay, I’ll drive."
Zhang Yong snorted with disdain and said, "Have you ever driven in the desert before?"
"No."
"Then it’s definitely me who’s driving."
He asserted himself into the driver’s seat, took a deep breath and suddenly said, "I hate the desert."
Uttering the unexpected remark, Zhang Yong started the car, turned on the headlights, and then drove the vehicle straight into the desert beside the road.
A few more kilometers ahead would be the intersection of two roads, a small place called Xima in Huaxia, which could hardly be considered a village due to its few houses, but on the map, it was marked as a small town.
Zhang Yong chose to turn off the road early, reasoning that as long as Xima didn’t have an ambush already set up, nothing would happen, but if it were as Zhang Yong feared and someone was waiting for them at Xima, driving around in a big detour should also avoid any trouble.
Having driven in the desert for a while, Xiao Ran, who had been keeping an eye on the sky, suddenly shouted, "Helicopter!"
Yang Yi was on the right and Xiao Ran on the left, so Xiao Ran was the first one to spot the lights in the sky.
Yang Yi pulled his head back in, climbed over Xiao Ran, and poked his head out to check the other side of the sky, where he could indeed see flickering lights. What else could it be but a helicopter?
Yang Yi was taken aback and said, "There really is an ambush!"
"Fuck! I hate the desert!"
Zhang Yong swore angrily, then vented his frustration, "With nowhere to hide, prepare to fight for your lives!"
How to fight a helicopter hovering overhead was something Yang Yi genuinely didn’t know, but he was aware that it would be easy for the helicopter to fire at a car that couldn’t move very fast.
Luckily, they had Zhang Yong, who evidently had ample experience in these situations.
"Don’t be scared. They also won’t find it easy to hit us in the helicopter, which isn’t a military one. Using rifles to shoot is not very accurate," he reassured.
After speaking in a rush, Zhang Yong suddenly asked, "Do you have any night vision devices or something?"
With utmost confidence, Xiao Ran replied, "I do! My gun has a thermal imaging night vision scope!"
Zhang Yong urgently said, "We can’t run; I have a tactic. The two of you get out here. I’ll keep driving in circles in the desert. If the enemy has other forces in waiting, they’ll sure come after us soon. You take out the pursuers on the ground, leaving only the annoying helicopter in the sky. There’s still a chance to escape, but if the enemy blocks us from both the sky and the ground, then we’re truly done for."
Without hesitation, Xiao Ran responded, "Okay!"
Staying in the car would only make them sitting ducks. Yang Yi reached out, opened the large bag, and took out a handgun, grabbing all the magazines, while Xiao Ran took out all her rifle’s magazines, then tossed the open bag onto Boer, saying sternly, "There’s a submachine gun in the bag."
Zhang Yong said gravely, "Got it. I can’t stop the car, so I’ll slow down and you two jump out. Are you ready?"
