Spy-x-War Showdown -
Chapter 266 - 265
Chapter 266: 265
Yang Yi didn’t know whether his judgment was correct but, if he used the process of elimination, there were no other possibilities other than the watch.
"When was the last time you pressed your watch? Was it in the hotel?"
If Boer’s location was compromised because of pressing the watch, then maybe no one had betrayed him.
After thinking for a while, Boer shook his head and said, "No, I haven’t used the night light function in a long time. I don’t need the watch to light up to see the time in my room. Oh no, I did press it before I fell asleep because it was very dark in the car..."
"What about the time before that? Not just the night light function, include all functions that require pressing a button!"
"Er, that would be at the casino. I was setting the alarm while we were playing cards."
Yang Yi breathed a sigh of relief and with the watch in hand, whispered, "I think it’s this."
With the desert’s extreme temperature difference, Boer shivered and asked, "Can I put on my clothes now?"
Boer was stark naked, and Xiao Ran had to keep turning her head away. Hearing Boer’s words, she said irritably, "Hurry up and put them on before you get back in the car. Let’s go!"
Zhang Yong said to Yang Yi, "Why haven’t you thrown away the watch? What are you waiting for?"
Yang Yi returned to the car and said, "We can’t throw it away, it’s of great use. Now that we’ve figured out how it works, we might as well take advantage of it."
Boer put on two articles of clothing and before he could finish dressing, Zhang Yong pushed him into the car and urged, "Get in and dress, let’s go, change route!"
By the time Yang Yi started the car again, Zhang Yong confidently said, "They won’t find us now. We just need to find a detour. Let’s drive down and change routes, let them keep searching on Highway 15."
Xiao Ran was already viewing the GPS on her phone and quickly said, "There’s an exit coming up, eight kilometers ahead. After getting off the freeway, turn left, there’s a gas station, which leads all the way to Route 40, and there are many side roads too."
Yang Yi sped up to the max and then asked in a deep voice, "Brother Yong, can you tell me who you were calling just now?"
"Oh, the agent. Mercenaries are just cannon fodder for dirty and exhausting work. A lot of people need cannon fodder to handle shady business, you see. It’s too risky to maintain a team oneself, so it’s better to find them when needed. That’s why there are mercenary agents."
Yang Yi, surprised, said, "You have an agent?"
"Not mine. Where would I get an agent? This agent is just a fancy term. In plain language, it’s just an intermediary, you understand? When an employer has a task and doesn’t want to contact the Mercenary Group directly, and many people don’t even know how to contact a Mercenary Group, then they look for an agency. The agent plays the role of a link between the employer and the mercenaries."
Yang Yi nodded and said, "I understand. So who did you find, can you tell me?"
Zhang Yong smiled and said, "The largest broker company in the United States, Tomler Company, named after the boss. The Mercenary Group I used to be with had frequent dealings with this broker company. This company mainly deals with big corporate business but also works with mercenaries. However, they are particularly ruthless when it comes to commissions from mercenaries, taking a huge cut. But they have big jobs, so if you want to make big money, you have to take jobs from Tomler Company."
"Is this company definitely reliable?"
"Definitely reliable, it’s an open mission, which means Tomler Company issues the task to all the mercenary groups they are in contact with, clarifies the task, and then anyone can accept it, whether you are capable or not. Usually, employers dare not do this. They only do it either when it’s extremely urgent or when it’s particularly difficult. Anyway, they don’t give a deposit, they only acknowledge the results, not the person. Whoever has the guts and ability to complete the task gets paid, or even if you snatch the corpse from the hands of the mercenary group that completed the mission, you still get paid."
Zhang Yong explained in detail, but didn’t quite get to the point, and Yang Yi asked urgently, "I mean, is the information from this company reliable?"
"Of course, it’s reliable. Didn’t you just hear it, wasn’t it clear enough? Usually, it’s the employers who provide the information, they give it to Tomler Company, and then Tomler Company passes it on to the mercenary group that accepts the task. To achieve the goal, the employers of course have to release the latest and most accurate information."
Yang Yi nodded and said, "I understand now, it’s pretty much like the relationship between the Cicero Family and spies. Hmm, Brother Yong, I’m lucky to have you."
Zhang Yong smiled indifferently and said, "Having been around for a while, naturally, I know a bit more. I guessed it was Tomler Company, because besides Tomler, no one else dares to take on this kind of task. It’s also lucky that I still have some connections in Tomler Company. The agent who used to be responsible for our mercenary group was also familiar with me. So, I just made a call to try, and unexpectedly, it worked out, not bad."
Boer had been listening in the background, and now he couldn’t help but chime in tremulously, "You mean Tomler Company, right? I’ve got it. Wait until I..."
Boer probably wanted to say something about how he would get revenge once he was free, but he only got halfway through his sentence before he had nothing more to say, then he said with a helpless expression, "Where do we go now?"
"Wherever," Yang Yi said gravely, "as long as it’s not Los Angeles."
Zhang Yong immediately said, "No, we have to go to Los Angeles. Even if we take a big detour, in the end, we still have to go to Los Angeles."
Yang Yi and Boer asked in unison, "Why?"
"Because only once we get to Los Angeles will I have a way to get us out of the United States."
Yang Yi exhaled and said, "Alright, then we’ll have to go to Los Angeles."
Boer asked tentatively, "Isn’t it very dangerous?"
Yang Yi couldn’t be bothered to answer, but Zhang Yong turned his head to look at Boer and then said in Chinese, "Fifty million, huh? How about we sell him? A hundred million might not come through, but fifty million is a sure thing. I take him out, make a call, and fifty million is in hand. Think about it?"
Yang Yi thought that did make sense. The hundred million that Boer promised might never materialize, but the fifty million from the people wanting Boer dead was definitely reachable because Boer was right in his hands.
However, Yang Yi still felt conflicted. He hesitated for a long time, and eventually said quietly, "Isn’t that a bit too much?"
Zhang Yong said carelessly, "If we’d taken his deposit, even if it was just one dollar, we’d have to protect him all the way. But did you take his money? No, right? Now, we’re just feeling sorry for him. We haven’t made any sort of contract with him; mere verbal promises mean nothing. I could say I’ll give you ten billion, but can I actually give it?"
The temptation was too great, but Yang Yi, after much deliberation, still couldn’t make this decision.
Seeing Yang Yi’s expression, Zhang Yong laughed and said, "How about we do this? We protect him for now, and once we leave the United States, he has to pay up immediately. If he can’t produce the money, that means he’s cheated our feelings. If he’s cheated our feelings, there’s no need to be polite. Heh, just take him out, one call, and the money is ours. We keep our integrity and get paid, how about that?"
Yang Yi immediately said, "Let’s do that!"
