Chapter 247: Chapter 246 This Damn Day
Yang Yi didn’t drag Boer as he ran; he felt that pushing the shocked-still Boer to safety with a flying leap was already more than enough of a gesture.
Yang Yi truly believed he had done enough since he had absolutely no reason to die alongside Boer, especially since it was Reddick’s groundless suspicions that had dragged him into this deadly situation in the first place.
This was no assassination; the hitman targeted only Boer with precise intent. Instead, this was an armed ambush—a gang of unknown assailants had recklessly unleashed weapons like rocket launchers on the streets.
So the harsh reality was that those who came close to Boer would die.
Frankly, Yang Yi himself didn’t know why he had made the worst possible decision, but involuntarily, he had saved Boer’s life, only to put himself in grave danger.
Now, Yang Yi had come to his senses; he needed to make the right decision.
The right decision, of course, was to get as far away from Boer as possible, and to run as fast as he could.
Yang Yi got up and bolted.
It must be said that the instinct to survive is incredibly strong.
The terrified Boer had crumbled completely, and without some unforeseen event, he would likely have been shot dead on the spot. But it seemed a slap from Yang Yi not only snapped him out of his daze but also gave him a beacon to escape toward.
Seeing Yang Yi get up and run, Boer also got up and ran, following closely behind Yang Yi, unfortunately.
The bodyguards were truly not on payroll for nothing; Yang Yi didn’t know how much Boer had spent to hire these people. However, without the bodyguards’ desperate resistance, Boer would have been dead several times over.
The smoke grenade could only cover a limited area, and Yang Yi quickly ran out of the thick smoke that could fully conceal his figure. Yet the smoke still provided significant help—at least those at a distance couldn’t see them clearly. The difference between being completely exposed and being barely visible was vast—one meant certain death, the other a high chance of dying.
And having a high chance of dying meant there was a high probability of getting shot, but there was also a possibility of escape, wasn’t there?
Yang Yi saw several fresh bullet holes appear on the ground in front of him.
In the midst of the chaos, he turned his head and upon discovering that Boer was running alongside him, cursed himself fiercely.
"That’s for being meddlesome!"
Why did he go and rescue Boer, and why slap him awake? Now the bullets followed Boer and came for both of them.
The highway wasn’t very wide—just a two-way four-lane road—and adding a sidewalk didn’t amount to much more space. Plus, the smoke was spreading. By some miracle, Yang Yi and Boer crashed into a store by the side of the road.
The difference was that Yang Yi ran in, while Boer tumbled in.
Yang Yi dragged Boer, who’d fallen to the floor, to one side, behind a wall where the bullets couldn’t reach. In that moment, he felt an intense sense of escaping death.
Half of Boer’s face was swollen—that was from the fall when Yang Yi had pushed him to the ground; the other half was also swollen from the slap that Yang Yi had just given him.
After being dragged aside by Yang Yi, Boer sat on the ground and shouted, "Reddick’s dead! Reddick’s dead!"
"Shut up! I know!"
Boer’s mouth bled as he barked desperately at Yang Yi, "What now? We’re done for, what do we do, what do we do!"
"Shut up!"
Yang Yi involuntarily covered his head with his hands, muttering to himself at a rapid pace, "Damn it, this is a warzone, what to do, what to do..."
Just then, a bodyguard rushed into the store, but the moment he set foot inside the door, a bullet hit him from behind.
The bodyguard fell to the ground, but he was wearing a bulletproof vest; though the bullet had penetrated it, he wasn’t dead, so the bodyguard tried to crawl forward.
Boer reached out to pull his bodyguard when another bullet came, hitting the bodyguard in the head.
The bodyguard died at the entrance.
Yang Yi turned his head and realized that he was in a liquor store, a store dedicated to selling alcohol, where three staff members, a man and two women, huddled in the farthest corner, shivering terribly.
"Where’s the back door?"
The male staff member was speechless, while a female staff member cried out, "If there was a back door, we would have left already!"
Well, Yang Yi had to admit that the staff member made a good point.
Large buildings, shopping malls, and all sorts of stores were everywhere nearby, but why on earth had he run into a small store without a back door?
There was no time for regrets now, having a door to enter through was lucky enough.
Yang Yi returned to the entrance, then he grabbed the bodyguard’s corpse and pulled it inside.
He first took the gun from the bodyguard’s hand, an M4 automatic rifle, followed by the pistol at the bodyguard’s waist, a Glock 17.
Yet again a Glock 17; honestly, Yang Yi didn’t like this gun, not because of its performance, but simply because he didn’t like its looks.
Handing the M4 to Boer, Yang Yi shouted, "Take it!"
Boer subconsciously accepted the rifle, and then Yang Yi flipped the body over, took the only remaining magazine from the bodyguard’s chest and gave it to Boer, before feeling around the bodyguard’s waist and pulling out a pistol magazine.
From the corpse’s left leg, Yang Yi drew a knife, a SOG M40 tactical knife.
Holding a knife in one hand and a pistol in the other, Yang Yi took a rough breath and then cursed bitterly, "Fuck, this goddamn day."
After swearing, Yang Yi turned to Boer and yelled, "What the hell happened!"
Boer didn’t answer Yang Yi’s question but said anxiously, "Your phone has been ringing non-stop."
"Of course I can hear my phone ringing, but is now the time to answer it? Fuck!"
Yang Yi stabbed the knife into the wooden shelf beside him, then he pointed the gun at the store door with one hand while pulling out his phone with the other to answer the call.
"Hello!"
"I heard gunfire and explosions, did you hear them?"
The call could only have been from Xiao Ran. Yang Yi replied urgently, "Of course I heard them, because I’m the one getting shot at!"
"Damn it, what happened? Weren’t you playing cards?"
Yang Yi said hastily, "I... don’t have time to explain this to you, this place has turned into a battlefield, and I’m trapped, call the police, hurry up and call the police!"
Xiao Ran said gravely, "I understand, hide yourself, wait for me to rescue you."
"What use could you be by coming here? The place is already a battlefield, with machine guns and cannons, what could you do, hey, hey? Damn it!"
The call had already been disconnected. Yang Yi angrily stuffed the phone into his pocket and then, Boer, who had now regained his composure, suddenly said, "There’s no more gunfire."
Yang Yi listened for a moment and then sighed, "It’s over, all your bodyguards are dead, no one can stop them now."
Boer took a deep breath and said softly, "It’s down to you now, pal, it’s all down to you."
Yang Yi snapped, "Down to me? What do you mean it’s all down to me? Why is it all down to me? I’m not your bodyguard! I... damn it! Move back, everyone move back and hide, watch out for grenades!"
