Chapter 246: Chapter 245 Collapse
If bullets are flying over your head and you can’t stop them, then find a place to hide yourself well.
A bullet hit the ground, bounced off, and drilled into the car’s chassis with a crisp clang.
As long as it wasn’t a bomb, or a shell, or a rocket, Yang Yi didn’t have enough experience to discern the source of the explosion; he just prayed the car he was using as cover wouldn’t be blown up.
But this thought only flashed through his mind before quickly vanishing without a trace.
The car Yang Yi was using as cover didn’t explode, but the one behind him burst into flames, and with the flow of gasoline, the fire was going to spread to him soon.
Yang Yi wanted to run; he got up from the ground, on all fours, but just as he was about to rush away from the spot, he saw Boer.
The car door opened, and Boer was kicked down.
Boer was sitting behind the driver, at the left-side door, while the attack came from the right side of the car.
Boer’s bodyguards had already started to organize a counterattack, some lying on the hood, others on the ground, shooting desperately towards the right.
But it seemed to be of no use because the bullets kept coming relentlessly.
Just then, Yang Yi saw Reddick, jumping down from the car door that Boer had just crawled through.
Yang Yi couldn’t stay any longer, and now that three cars had crashed together, there was still enough space to use, at least to get a bit farther away from the burning vehicles.
The heat seared his body, and it seemed like most of the bullets were concentrated on the area where Boer was, so Boer lay on the ground shouting, not daring to get up and leave quickly.
Yang Yi crawled forward a bit but then retreated back, reached his hand into the opened sliding door to grab his fallen cellphone, and then crawled forward a few steps, at least getting away from the raging flames for the meantime.
Yang Yi didn’t quite understand why the bullets only came from the right. If this was an attack targeting Boer, if someone had tracked Boer’s route and laid out a trap, didn’t they understand the basic tactics of a pincer move?
But there was no time to consider these things now. If bullets were coming from the right, then he would go to the left. Crossing two lanes on the highway, completely exposed without any cover, wasn’t ideal, but it still beat moving towards the bullets.
Reddick bellowed, "Smoke grenades!"
The bodyguards had extremely high combat discipline.
Well, actually, Yang Yi couldn’t really tell what kind of combat discipline they had, but he felt that those bodyguards still managed to organize a counterattack in such adverse conditions and seemed indeed to be effectively suppressing the enemies. Most importantly, no one was running away, so they must be quite skilled.
However, the troublesome thing was that most of the bodyguards only had handguns, with only four of them carrying rifles, and there were only a few left in total. He didn’t have time to count quickly, but there were at most ten of them.
Several grenade-like objects were thrown to the other side of the car, and then thick red smoke began to billow up. As more smoke grenades were thrown out, the dense smoke soon covered a large area.
"Form a human shield, get him out!"
Yang Yi heard Reddick’s words, for the sound of gunfire had merged into one continuous roar, and Reddick would have to shout loudly for anyone to hear him, allowing Yang Yi to hear him clearly.
Yang Yi was less than ten meters away from Boer; during the initial assault, when the convoy reversed and collided continuously, the distance was squeezed to the limit.
Others might be fleeing, but Yang Yi was not in a rush to run anymore. Boer was the target, and the closer one got to him, the faster they’d die.
Thus, Yang Yi decided to hide. Then he saw four people form a human wall, shooting while bending over and retreating. Reddick was holding Boer by the head with one hand, standing behind and to the side of Boer, frantically pushing him forward as they ran.
Yang Yi didn’t hear the gunshots, or more precisely, he didn’t hear any distinct gunshots. He just saw a bodyguard from the human wall collapse to the ground followed by a second, and then Reddick, who was shielding Boer, stumbled and fell down with Boer.
One by one, with brief intervals between each, Boer hadn’t managed to run more than a few meters before he fell to the ground again.
"Sniper!"
Reddick shouted with difficulty, and then he crawled onto Boer’s body. Following that, two more bodyguards moved to their front once again, raising their guns and firing furiously in one direction.
With a loud bang, Yang Yi felt the searing blast. He turned to see that a burning car had set the vehicle he had just been in ablaze.
The fire grew bigger, leaving Yang Yi with no place to hide. If he didn’t run now, he would be burned to death.
Just then, Reddick bellowed with difficulty, "Smoke grenades! Smoke grenades!"
Several smoke grenades were thrown out, and then Reddick yelled, "Take him away!"
At this point, Boer was already incapacitated, lying on the ground with his hands covering his head, merely shouting.
Boer’s protective detail was quite large, roughly twenty people, but now, according to Yang Yi’s observations, there were at most six or seven people still able to move. The rest were dead or injured, with the majority being dead.
Hiding was no longer an option, and the fire was about to reach him. To run was to face the danger of being hit by bullets, but seeing the smoke getting thicker and already enveloping his surroundings, Yang Yi decided to run anyway.
Yang Yi got up and started running towards the left, and then he saw a bodyguard shielding Boer get shot in the back, spewing out a stream of blood and collapsing silently to the ground.
Now, only two people were left by Boer’s side, one an unsteady Reddick, the other a bodyguard dragging Boer.
Reddick leaped up, shielding Boer as he fired repeatedly into a window. However, the very next shot blew Reddick’s head apart.
Boer watched as Reddick’s head exploded right beside him.
Boer fell apart. He straightened up, stopped running forward, and instead began screaming as he watched half of Reddick’s head disappear.
The bodyguard still dragging Boer finally gave up. He let go of Boer, but he didn’t run. Instead, he shot crazily in the direction where Reddick had just been killed.
Boer was done for; the bodyguard who could shield him was just a question of dying sooner or later. And if he didn’t shield Boer but suppressed the sniper, he was bound to be killed by others.
But just before a fatal bullet could hit Boer, Yang Yi leaped out, tackled Boer mid-air, and with both of them crashing heavily to the ground, a bullet flew past where Boer had just been standing and struck the ground.
Boer hit the ground with Yang Yi on top of him. Yang Yi rolled off of Boer, raised his hand, and slapped the still-screaming Boer across the face.
"Your mother’s calling you! Run!"
