Chapter 166: Chapter 165: Return of the King
Hank and his crew had found Rodriguez. Although Rodriguez was seriously injured, he was still handcuffed to the hospital bed with one hand.
But to Hank, handcuffs were no big deal. He unlocked them with just a few quick moves, and then he and Chris supported Rodriguez and started running outside.
When you live in prison, there’s no need for secrecy about identities, so Yang Yi looked at the surveillance screen and said irritably, "Hey, old man, there are at least thirty prison guards in front of you, so forget about going upstairs. There are four prisoners, one of whom is being carried. They are about to run past you. Do me a favor and watch over them, that’s my brother."
Brian looked around in confusion, then toward a camera in the corner, and waved at it to say hello.
Yang Yi said irritably, "As for you guys, can you move any faster? Hank, and Chris, be careful not to shake Rodriguez to death. But actually, better hurry up, even faster."
Brian waited until he saw Hank and the others, then swung his gun and without hesitation followed them toward the prison’s main gate.
Yang Yi continued to direct over the PA system.
"Guards near the gate, I’m talking to you, step away from the gate. A bunch of people have already run out. What are you guarding the entrance for? Do you want to force me to kill someone? Get moving, drop your weapons, and run. There are no prisoners left to threaten you. I need to see you without weapons, or my friend might hurt someone. Trust me, his aim is better than yours."
After putting down the microphone, Yang Yi thought for a moment and said, "How can I destroy the prison gate’s control system? Let me think. Could damaging the control system here cause the door to shut?"
The prison warden’s face kept changing before he said dejectedly, "Yes, if it’s damaged, the door will close..."
The warden was surprisingly forthcoming in his response because he didn’t want to die. Sure, he’d lose his job, but he wouldn’t be dead. But if Yang Yi couldn’t escape, his own fate was clear. So, not wanting to meet his maker, he’d rather be honest.
Yang Yi said with a curious expression, "So what can be done to prevent you from shutting the prison gate? Folks, I still want to get out, but if I don’t do something, you could close the gate. The best way for me would be to kill you all, so that when I jump out of the window, the closed gate won’t stop me. But I don’t want to kill you, so, who can offer a good solution? Who’s willing to speak up for a method that won’t get you killed and will let me leave?"
The prison warden looked at the guards whose hands were cuffed into fists, and finally, one of the guards said in a low voice, "Are you sure you won’t kill us?"
"Ha, think about it. Who will the National Guards chase first? It would be the large group of prisoners, right? But if I killed all of you, they’d be out of their minds and chase me first. Get it? None of us wants to die, so there’s no need for any promises, right?"
The guard replied in a low voice, "It’s possible to destroy the control mechanism here without closing the gate. If this is damaged, a signal will be sent to the gate’s electronic control system and it will automatically shut. But if you destroy the signal sensor first—actually, you just need to unplug it—then you can smash everything else here and it won’t close the gate."
Yang Yi smiled and said, "Hey, everyone, he just saved all of your lives. You really should thank him. Of course, if he’s lying to me, then you’re all dead for sure. Now, let me give it a try!"
Following the guard’s instructions, Yang Yi opened a box, then pulled out one of the many sensors inside and smashed it to pieces. Afterward, he turned to the warden and said with a smile, "Now you start shouting. Make it clear to those outside that you’re alright, it’s just destruction, so don’t come barging in. I’m going to shoot now, you’d better make your voices louder."
One of the guards shouted softly twice, and then all the guards began to yell loudly. At that point, Yang Yi, aligning the handguns into a row, started to pick each up and shoot, shattering everything that could be destroyed.
After he had shot and ruined the power supply, controllers, computer cases—essentially everything that could control the doors—Yang Yi suddenly fired several shots towards the window glass, and then kicked the window, which now had several small holes, shattering it, before leaping out.
The second floor wasn’t really that high, and Yang Yi landed without rolling, fearing he might get cut by the broken glass. He merely came to a stop upon landing and then immediately got up and began to run desperately.
However, Yang Yi didn’t run straight ahead; instead, he ran along the administrative building. He was worried that there were guards in the rooms next to the control room. If he ran straight ahead, he might as well have been waiting to be shot.
After running along the wall for quite a distance, Yang Yi quickly began to run straight forward. Only after he had covered more than a hundred meters did he finally hear gunfire from behind him.
Yang Yi could see bullets whipping into the ground in front of him, but none hit him. Brian was still guarding the entrance to the prison, firing at the administrative building behind Yang Yi and furiously gesturing during the intervals between shots.
After a glance and a moment of confusion, Yang Yi finally understood what Brian meant. He was telling him to run in a zigzag pattern, not to keep charging straight ahead, but to run in an S-shaped line.
Yang Yi started running in an S-shaped line. He was only a few dozen meters from the gate when he heard continuous gunfire from behind him—the sound of automatic rifles firing. Brian, with a rifle he had procured from who knows where, fired several shots. After that, the gunfire behind Yang Yi became sparse, reduced to only the sound of handgun shots and no rifle fire. Even if there were rifle shots, they certainly posed no threat to him.
Of course, the threat of dozens of handguns firing at once was significant, but beyond a hundred meters, there was essentially no need to worry. Apart from a few exceptional sharpshooters who would study this, who would organize training for dozens of people to hit a high-speed moving target using handguns in volleys? Those guards, after more than fifty meters, wouldn’t even know where the bullet trajectory was, let alone guess where to shoot.
In truth, Yang Yi had prepared himself to be hit by bullets. Really, he felt that as long as he didn’t die, it would be a victory. But now he really understood the value of Brian—it was because of Brian alone, with his gun, that he was protected while running nearly three hundred meters past dozens of guards without being hit.
Dashing out of the prison gates, aside from the knife wound on his stomach that not only hurt but was bleeding, Yang Yi didn’t have a scratch on him.
Seeing Yang Yi running out, Brian shouted, "Welcome to freedom!"
Yang Yi let out an excited yell, then he roared at Brian, "The king returns! This is the return of the king."
As Brian tucked away his gun and ran alongside Yang Yi, he shouted back, "Thanks for the compliment.">
Yang Yi pointed to his nose and yelled, "I’m talking about myself here; you’re the beast unleashed. I am the one who’s the returning king!"
