Chapter 164: Chapter 163: The Fierce Beast Escapes its Cage
The sunrise was unseeable today, for the sun had already risen.
However, the phrase "come out to see the sunrise" was a secret code that Yang Yi had given to Brian.
The prison break, was happening right now.
So, when Brian heard Yang Yi’s sudden broadcast, he was stunned, but a smile quickly spread across his face.
After spitting out a set of keys from his mouth and taking a breath, Brian inserted the key into the keyhole of his leg irons and slowly unlocked them, followed by the handcuffs.
He flexed his wrists and shrugged his shoulders, then Brian crossed himself and murmured softly, "Almighty Lord, thank You for Your mercy, thank You for sending me the Angel to save me, Amen."
Meanwhile, the broadcast continued.
"Hello everyone, I’m Benjamin Park, from South Korea, sentenced to five years in prison for reckless driving and intentional injury. Guess where I am? That’s right, I’m in the prison control room, and I’m watching those surprised faces of yours, haha!"
After laughing proudly for a few times, the broadcast voice resounded once more.
"Now, I have the warden and seventeen hostages under my control. So, the following message is for the correctional officers: if any of you dare to shoot, I’ll kill a hostage. I’m watching you through the monitors, so you’d better stay still and don’t make any moves, or else the blood of your colleagues and superiors will be on your hands.
But, I don’t want to trigger a massacre, so if any prisoner dares come close to you, feel free to shoot and take him down. Officers, I’m not asking you to kill, but I also don’t want you to get killed, so let’s peacefully coexist. Since you’ve already lost the ability to control the situation, just sit back and watch quietly."
"Next up, a word for the prisoners: Do you want to get out? Then go ahead, but stay put—if you try to attack the officers and get shot, well, you had it coming. I’m offering you a single chance to leave, but not a chance for vengeance, got it?"
After delivering his message slowly and clearly, Yang Yi then laughed and said, "I’ve said all that needs to be said, so, brothers who want to leave, are you ready? Now, let me see those arms raised!"
Whether they were prisoners out in the yard or locked up in their cells, everyone raised their arms; they were shouting wildly and cheering, although Yang Yi in the control room couldn’t hear them.
Yang Yi pressed one button after another, and the cell doors opened, the wire mesh gates opened, the fence gates swung open.
All the doors were now open.
Brian stood behind the door to the chimney.
The door to the chimney was manually closed from the outside, something the control room couldn’t remotely operate, but Brian was not worried about this at all, for he knew the specifics of the special security area as well as his own special circumstances.
As expected, chaotic shouting from outside came through, along with the sound of iron doors being opened.
Even if the warden was taken hostage and killed, inmates from the special security area couldn’t leave, so to be precise, it was the special security area within Pelican Bay Prison that was actually the highest security level prison in America.
Brian knew what the correctional officers’ emergency response should be, and he had already informed Yang Yi.
The chimney door opened, and George burst in, bellowing, "Get back to your cell right now, oh, shit..."
Seeing Brian in front of him, not restrained by handcuffs or leg irons, George froze in an instant.
Brian grabbed George by the neck and pushed him out of the chimney; then he abruptly stepped out from the chimney, swung his left arm violently, grabbing the shotgun barrel that the guard was pointing at him in a panic—yanking hard and then kicking—the shotgun fell into his hands.
The gun fired, but the bullet struck the air.
Brian tossed the gun in his hand into the air, and by the time it fell, his hand was grasping the handle.
Brian’s right hand was still clutching George’s neck.
George, gasping for air, was struggling fiercely, while Brian leaned in close to his ear and whispered, "Benjamin sends his regards."
Just then, Yang Yi’s voice came through the loudspeaker again.
"Don’t kill anyone! Guys, hurting a prison guard is a dumb move. All you need is to leave peacefully."
Brian knew the words were for him, but he spat disdainfully on the ground and then pinched hard with two fingers of his right hand before releasing George’s neck.
George fell to the ground, frantically kicking his legs as he clutched at his neck, while Brian calmly drew the pistol from George’s holster and whispered, "Die already, I’ve wanted you dead for a long time!"
Snapping a windpipe with two fingers is a difficult task, but not for Brian.
The Special Housing Unit cells had a gate that the control room couldn’t open, but the barbed-wire fence around the Special Housing Unit could be opened from the control room.
And Brian was now in the yard of the Special Housing Unit, so the gate to the outside was already open.
One of the guards at the watchtower had been knocked unconscious by Brian, and there was another at the gate. The rest were inside the cells.
Brian only had to face one remaining guard, but he couldn’t care less.
Of course, not caring didn’t mean walking straight up to be an easy target. With quick and evasive steps, Brian approached the gate of the Special Housing Unit and fired at the guard who was trying hard to close it.
"If you don’t want to die, don’t move. Throw your gun on the ground. Today’s a day of celebration for me, so I really don’t feel like killing."
Brian shot the hand of the guard at the gate, then the guard obediently threw his gun aside and lay on the ground, no longer trying to close the gate he could not shut.
Brian quickly ran out of the Special Housing Unit’s gate, then, looking at the chaotic scene on the exercise yard of the high-security area, he couldn’t help but take a deep breath, shouting, "Freedom smells so good!"
Some inmates lay still on the ground, and there were even those who approached the guards to lay down with their hands behind their heads, because they didn’t want to escape.
But the majority of the inmates, who were mostly serving life sentences in the high-security area, were racing desperately toward the open gates.
"A bunch of idiots! There will be an army outside waiting to catch you all."
Brian spat disdainfully, then tucked the pistol into his waistband and, stretching out a hand, grabbed an inmate running past him, glaring fiercely, "Where’s the control room?"
The inmate pointed toward the administration building outside the wire fence and yelled, "Let me go, old man!"
Brian immediately let go, then took a shotgun in both hands, making a gesture with one hand to the nearest camera.
The gesture meant wait for me.
