Chapter 163: Chapter 162 Come Out to Watch the Sunrise
There were many computers in the control room, many displays, and at least a dozen guards.
It was an era of automation and electronics, and the control room was the neural center of the prison. All the switches for the cell doors were controlled here, and all the footage captured by the cameras was displayed here. If an inmate made any kind of move, the control room could detect it instantly and then respond and command instantly.
In theory, this critical place known as the control room should never allow anyone other than the staff to enter, let alone a prisoner, but Yang Yi had just walked in.
Pelican Bay Prison was, after all, the highest-security prison in the whole of the United States. However, it was those guards who directly dealt with the prisoners in the cells who were always on edge, fearing an unexpected incident. Here, in the control room of the administrative building, if the guards had to work in a constant state of anxiety, that would indeed be ridiculous.
So Yang Yi just walked in so easily.
Yang Yi strolled in and then he discovered that the guards were not sitting in their places; instead, they were standing in a circle, with one person sitting and lecturing them.
"A lot has happened these past few days! I don’t want to blame you for negligence, but you must be fully alert and watch every place. We absolutely cannot let the inmates fight again. If you find out, notify the officers at the front immediately and give them orders! If you need to shoot, shoot! We can’t have any more vicious killings happen again this time..."
"Cough, cough, cough, cough!"
The voice speaking was too familiar. Yang Yi coughed loudly twice from the back, then he walked around the circle of guards listening to the lecture and went around to the side.
Interrupted by the coughing, the warden stopped his lecture with an annoyed expression. Just then, Yang Yi walked past the guards and stood next to the warden.
"I’m sorry to interrupt you, but why are you here?"
Pointing the pistol at the warden, Yang Yi said cheerily, then immediately swung the pistol around and said loudly, "Oh, oh, oh, what are you thinking about? Resistance, huh? Guys, you have one, two, three... seventeen people here, plus the warden makes eighteen. Uh, how many bullets can a Glock 17 hold? What a coincidence, a Glock 17 can also hold a maximum of 18 bullets; what a coincidence indeed!"
The warden stood up involuntarily, then said in astonishment, "It’s you! What do you want to do?"
Yang Yi elbowed the warden in the stomach, making the warden scream and slump back into his chair, then he said slowly, "I told you not to move."
Yang Yi then turned to the two rows of guards forming a semi-circle and said in a deep voice, "It’s all for a paycheck, so why risk your life, right? I believe none of you here is willing to sacrifice your life. Trust me, I could kill all of you with my bare hands, but I don’t want to do that because my life in this prison has been quite enjoyable, so there’s absolutely no need to harm any one of you."
All seventeen guards raised their hands high because they all knew that in such a situation, a careless move, even a slight twitch, could cause the armed prisoner holding them hostage to panic and open fire, resulting in a massacre.
A single person with a handgun couldn’t possibly kill everyone present, but who knew who would be hit if the shots were fired? So at times like these, it’s best not to play the hero.
Yang Yi exhaled and then said with a smile, "Do all of you have handcuffs? Oh, it seems you do. Now, take out your handcuffs and cuff yourself. Fasten the other end to the person next to you, yes, just like that. And you’re the second one, take out your handcuffs, lock your left hand and then his right hand, yes, good. One by one, whoever doesn’t do it right, I’ll shoot."
The guards one by one cuffed themselves and the person next to them in a chain, as Yang Yi held them at gunpoint. Just then, one guard Yang Yi wasn’t watching quietly lowered his hands.
Yang Yi suddenly leapt forward and kicked the guard with the intention to act, sending him crashing to the ground before coldly saying, "You thought I couldn’t see? Wrong, I can."
Pointing to the guard with the handcuffs, Yang Yi said with a cold voice, "Cuff him up while I’m still in a good mood and not planning a slaughter."
Soon all the guards were cuffed in a line, and Yang Yi didn’t forget to have someone drag over the one who had fainted at the door and cuff them together, turning them all into a circle.
With the guards no longer a threat, Yang Yi methodically removed all their handguns and neatly laid them out in front of him.
The warden who had been sitting motionless in his chair finally couldn’t help but ask, "What exactly do you want to do?"
Yang Yi looked at the warden, then furrowed his brow and said, "No handcuffs left, huh? Take off your belt, come on!"
After hesitating for a while, the warden still took off his belt. Yang Yi snatched the warden’s hands, wrapped them several times with the belt, and then pulled hard, causing the warden to cry out in pain. Yang Yi then said with a smile, "What do I want to do? You’ll find out soon. For now, say goodbye to your position as warden!"
With a laugh, Yang Yi began to look at the myriad of screens before him, then said with a light chuckle, "Maximum-security block, minimum-security block, special block, not bad. How do I talk to them?"
Walking to a row of screens, Yang Yi put the handgun aside and murmured to himself, "This should be it—let me try this. Open all the cell doors."
Pressing a button, Yang Yi then saw on the monitors as all the doors in the minimum-security section suddenly opened at once.
"Wow!"
Yang Yi grew excited; the cell doors could be opened individually from the control room, but more often it was all or nothing since the only times they’d open and close were for meals, and it wasn’t practical to do it one by one.
Yang Yi took a breath, realizing he didn’t need to struggle to find the switch to control each door, nor ask any guards, as each button was clearly labeled.
"How do I talk? Where’s the prison’s intercom for announcements? Tell me... ah, never mind..."
Spotting a microphone, Yang Yi walked over to it excitedly, then on the computer, he selected the broadcasting area, going for all of them.
Turning on the microphone, Yang Yi tapped it and then loudly said, "Hello, hello, can you hear me?"
Most of the inmates turned their heads to look at the speakers distributed around the prison. Seeing this on the monitors, Yang Yi was delighted, so he shouted, "Come out and see the sunrise!"
