Chapter 153: Chapter 152: In a Precarious Situation
Three days in solitary, but that wasn’t a problem for Yang Yi.
Upon his release from the isolation cell and returning to his own cell, all Yang Yi wanted was a good night’s sleep. For others, solitary confinement was a psychological torture, but for him, it was physical.
A good night’s sleep was all he needed.
However, when Yang Yi got back to his cell, he discovered someone else had taken his bed.
A Mexican, with tattoos showing on his bare back, was lying on the bottom bunk, legs crossed while reading a magazine.
Seeing Yang Yi come in, the Mexican got off the bed, stood on the floor, and said arrogantly, "I know you’re a bad guy."
Yang Yi, impatiently gesturing with his hand, said in a deep voice, "You’re new here?"
The Mexican hesitated, then nodded and arrogantly replied, "Yes, but I am..."
"Stop. You know I’m a bad guy and still dare to talk to me like this? Which gang are you with?"
The Mexican replied proudly, "Ninth Street District!"
"Ninth Street District? Never heard of such a gang. Now, take your stuff off my bed, or I’ll regret letting you in."
The Mexican didn’t want to waste any more words. He drew a knife from behind his waist and lunged furiously at Yang Yi.
Yang Yi simply turned around, grabbed the Mexican’s wrist with his left hand and his elbow with his right, and with a forceful twist, there was a crisp snap. The Mexican collapsed to the floor, screaming in agony with his now broken arm.
"Bastard! You broke my arm..."
Yang Yi crouched down and delivered a punch to the Mexican’s face, followed by another, and another.
"Don’t you know if you’re going to fight, just fight? Stop all that useless chatter! For all your useless words! For all your useless words!"
After a few punches, the Mexican’s face and mouth were covered in blood. Yang Yi stood up, shook off his clothes, rotated his neck, and said with relish, "Beating someone up after being locked up for a few days sure feels good!"
The beaten Mexican, lying on the ground and groaning weakly, called out, "Help! Somebody save me..."
The guard came again, opened the cell door, glanced at the inmate lying on the floor, then at the ferocious Yang Yi, and without hesitation, raised his baton.
"Enough!"
After a sharp reprimand, Yang Yi pointed at himself, saying impatiently, "Don’t you know who I am? Huh? We’ve known each other for a long time, don’t you know me? The warden can take his anger out on me if he wants to, but you? Don’t you know I’ll be getting out of here? Even if I get more time added to my sentence, don’t I have people on the outside? Fuck! Think about it!"
Zhang Yong had already escaped from prison in a way that was impossible for an ordinary person. Seeing how fierce and impatient Yang Yi looked, the guard hesitated and finally put down his baton.
"You’ve made our boss very angry..."
The guard muttered under his breath, and Yang Yi, in annoyance, waved his hand and said, "Do what you have to do. Just because the warden tells you to beat someone, you’ll do it? You really think I won’t make one call and have you killed?"
Kicking the still-crying Mexican on the floor, Yang Yi said impatiently, "Take him away!"
After a show of false bravado, the guard hesitated, but he ultimately spoke into the intercom, "There’s been a fight, I need backup, call the doctor over."
The guards were just outside, several of them, it was all just an act, and Yang Yi coldly watched as several guards came in and took the Mexican away.
As he waited for two armed guards to handcuff him, Yang Yi said irritably, "Take me to see the warden, I want to have a proper talk with him."
No sooner had Yang Yi spoken these words than a guard hit him hard on the back with a baton. Yang Yi stumbled forward, then steadied himself, turned back to look at the guard who had hit him, and said narrowing his eyes, "I’ll remember you, Mix!"
The guard raised his baton again, and Yang Yi said fiercely, "Think carefully about who you’re dealing with. This originally had nothing to do with you, but if you insist on causing trouble, I won’t mind picking one of you to teach a lesson. Want to try me, Mix?"
The guard who had raised the baton slowly put it back down. Yang Yi said impatiently, "I said, let me see your warden, fuck! I’ve had enough!"
"No one wants to see you, you’ll be staying in solitary confinement next."
The guard named Mix was notoriously brutal; he didn’t hold back when beating people, but today, after being fiercely shoved by Yang Yi, he seemed somewhat sheepish.
Prisoners would never provoke guards unless they had a death wish or were truly foolish, much less threaten them. However, Yang Yi acted too well, and most importantly, everyone knew this was a grudge between Zhang Yong, Yang Yi, and the trusting warden.
They didn’t need to know why, they just needed to know the waters were deep enough.
So this time, Yang Yi was not beaten and was once again sent into solitary confinement.
The only downside was that he couldn’t eat his fill, leaving Yang Yi so weak he couldn’t exercise, because none of the guards dared give him extra food while the new warden clearly targeted him.
Another three days.
This time when he came out, Yang Yi really did stagger a bit.
It wasn’t the confinement, but hunger that did it—just one meal a day and pitifully little at that. Now with a body built with muscles and a big appetite, Yang Yi truly couldn’t hold on.
Both times he was put in solitary confinement right after breakfast, but this time, when Yang Yi was released, he finally caught breakfast time.
Yang Yi needed to be dragged by the guards to the cafeteria, and as he shuffled to his usual seat, he was shocked to find that the underlings who would usually crowd around him were gone.
Only a battered Rodriguez remained.
Seeing Yang Yi, Rodriguez immediately stood up, then helped him sit down before saying anxiously, "Boss! I’ll go get you some food right away. You must be starving, eat mine first."
Yang Yi waved his hand feebly and said in a low voice, "Where are the others?"
"They... they don’t come around anymore, a lot has happened these past few days, so... "
Yang Yi waved his hand, saying, "No need to say more, go get me something to eat, a lot of it."
Rodriguez immediately ran off, took an empty plate, and then got food for Yang Yi. Although Yang Yi was truly famished, he did not eat what Rodriguez had left over.
Just then, Gweil and Hamer Phil came over swiftly carrying their trays, then stood in front of Yang Yi and said together in a low voice, "Boss."
Yang Yi exhaled and said, "If you’re willing to stick with me, sit down; otherwise, just go away. Anyway, I’m indeed in no position to protect myself right now."
