Chapter 137: Chapter 136: All Kinds of People
Hank didn’t seem to know where the strength came from, but his arms trembled as he propped himself up into a sitting position, then he snatched the instant noodles from Yang Yi.
Yang Yi handed him a fork with his other hand. Hank’s hand holding the noodles continued to shake, and then he took the fork with his right hand and immediately stuck it into the noodles.
The noodles were not fully rehydrated, but Hank, with his trembling hands, shoveled them into his mouth.
After eating a bit, Hank’s hands trembled even more violently, resembling a whirlwind as he finished off the portion of the noodles that had barely soaked, then he picked up the paper bowl and tipped his head back to drink all the broth.
After drinking all the soup, Hank let out a long breath and said in a low voice, "So delicious..."
Hank was truly starved.
In fact, inmates even in solitary confinement get food, though not much; it certainly wouldn’t come to the point of surviving on two small slices of bread a week. Therefore, Hank’s starvation was actually orchestrated by Yang Yi.
A simple heads-up was all it took; those guards would have been only too happy to starve Hank, who had attempted to escape.
A pack of instant noodles and a piece of chocolate were far from enough to satisfy a man starved for a week, so Hank’s hands still shook terribly, but at least he had managed to sit up.
Yang Yi went back and grabbed another pack of instant noodles, not the bowl kind this time, but the bag kind, dangling them in front of Hank with a smile, "Want it?"
Hank’s eyes went wide, and after hesitating for a long time, he finally said in a low voice, "What do you want to do? Alright, I can agree to one thing, I can do one thing for you, but only one!"
Yang Yi shook his head, smiling, "I don’t need you to do anything for me. You’re already my little brother now, and it’s a big brother’s responsibility to ensure his little brothers are well-fed. I’m just asking if you’ve had enough and if you want some more."
"I want it!" Hank exclaimed.
Yang Yi began to tear open the noodle package, placing the noodle block inside the bowl Hank still held, then he opened the seasoning packet and grabbed the thermos, pouring the remaining hot water in.
"Take it slower this time; letting it soak a bit longer will make it better."
Hank was taken aback for a moment, then said softly, "Thank you."
Clapping his hands together, Yang Yi chuckled, "Don’t mention it, you’ve gone too long without food to eat too much at once, so after these, go to sleep. Get a good night’s rest, and you’ll recover by tomorrow."
Yang Yi stopped paying attention to Hank and started to exercise on his own. After Hank devoured the noodles once again, Yang Yi said unhurriedly, "Go to bed, up there. If you need help getting up, I can help."
Hank truly couldn’t climb onto the top bunk, and in the end, it was Yang Yi who helped push him up.
Hank didn’t even bother to unfurl his bedding. He merely pulled over a blanket and covered himself, then began to snore soundly almost immediately.
Time in the isolation cell could drag on without being able to do much, yet a good night’s sleep was elusive. Hank was both starved and exhausted; that he hadn’t completely broken down mentally was actually quite impressive. After seven days in isolation, it wasn’t unusual for someone to become so worn down they could barely speak coherently after three or four more days.
Early the next morning, Hank was still deep asleep when Yang Yi nudged him awake.
"I didn’t want to wake you this early, but breakfast is almost ready. Do you want to eat?"
Hank sat up abruptly and said anxiously, "Eat!"
"You smell too bad right now. Get up, wash yourself, change into clean prison clothes, or else you’ll get beaten up when you go for food."
Hank quickly washed up and then went to the canteen with Yang Yi.
Yang Yi, carrying his own tray, came to his usual spot surrounded by his subordinates.
Pointing at Hank, Yang Yi loudly said, "From now on, he’s one of us. Just got out of solitary. Clint, go get him some more food."
Hank didn’t say much; he was intently eating his meal, which was quite distinctive in itself. He clamped the plate between his arms, shielding most of the food with his hands, then ate very quickly.
Clint pushed aside one of Hank’s hands and threw a stack of bread slices onto Hank’s plate, then said with disdain, "Stick with the boss, and no one will dare steal your grub."
Hank paused for a second, then continued to eat intensely, his mouth muffled with food as he said, "Thanks."
After finishing his milk, Yang Yi said to Hank, who was still eating, "We’re not actually a gang, just a group of people helping each other out. They call me ’boss’ because I can protect them, but we’re not the same as those drug-trafficking gangs. Got it?"
Hank paused again, then nodded, "Got it."
Yang Yi stood up and said, "Eat up, I’ve got to go to work, see you at dinner."
Hank asked curiously, "Work, what work?"
"It’s none of your business. I’ll be back in the evening. Hank, don’t let me find out I’m missing anything."
As if insulted, Hank retorted indignantly, "I’m a grand thief, not a petty one. Even in prison, I wouldn’t stoop to stealing some cigarettes."
Yang Yi ignored Hank and left the cafeteria directly.
Hank could be useful, but for now, Yang Yi hadn’t figured out how, or rather, hadn’t found the opportunity to use him.
Without any guards following, Yang Yi arrived alone at the entrance to the Special Wing.
Yang Yi had been working in the Special Wing for an entire week. He worked there eight hours during the daytime, but the guards were on a rotating shift, which meant one week during the daytime, from 8 AM to 4 PM, then switching shifts to work from 4 PM to midnight, with four teams of people rotating like this.
Today was shift change time, so Yang Yi did not have the chance to see Clint.
Yang Yi stood at the entrance to the Special Wing when suddenly a young-looking guard eyed him and said, "Hey, are you the new guy?"
Yang Yi nodded, "Hello, Officer."
The guard was still smiling, but Yang Yi felt that this smile was clearly malicious.
People vary widely, and among the guards were the friendly types like Clint, but of course, there were also those who were unfriendly. Clint, out of boredom, might be willing to chat with Yang Yi, but other guards might seek their amusement at someone else’s expense.
They couldn’t bully their colleagues, but bullying the inmates was a different story.
As they began to enter, Yang Yi walked in front, but just then, someone pinched his buttocks hard.
Yang Yi jolted forward, then suddenly turned around. He nearly lashed out with his palm, but fortunately, his reasoning overpowered his instinctual reaction.
If he had let that slap fly, it’s hard to say what would have happened to the guard, but Yang Yi would definitely not escape the charge of assaulting an officer, and no one could help him.
Watching Yang Yi’s shocked and furious expression, the guard guffawed, saying to his colleagues, "Look at this gal jump! Kills me every time."
