Chapter 136: Chapter 135 Reconciliation
Each prisoner only got one chance a week to get some fresh air, so Yang Yi would have to wait a whole week before he could see Brian again.
Before he saw Brian, Yang Yi first encountered Hank.
It was already dark, and Yang Yi was in the middle of his routine workout in his cell when a prison guard appeared outside his cell.
"3387, your roommate is back, watch him and don’t let him escape again."
After uttering those routine words, the guard opened the cell door, and then two other guards dragged a man and dumped him straight into Yang Yi’s cell.
Hank collapsed onto the floor.
With a scruffy beard, a dazed look in his eyes, and a foul stench emanating from his body, Hank lay motionless on the ground. But as his blurry eyes gradually focused on Yang Yi in front of him, Hank made no attempt to hide the hatred in his eyes.
But soon, very soon, Hank switched his malevolent gaze to one of submissiveness. If Yang Yi hadn’t been watching him all along, he definitely wouldn’t have caught these quick changes in expression.
Not everyone could come out unscathed after being locked in solitary for seven days. Yang Yi handled it with ease, but Hank, obviously, had broken down.
The fact that Hank could still mask his true thoughts while on the verge of a mental breakdown led Yang Yi to think Hank was quite a talent.
Who said all thieves had to be cowards? Who said a thief couldn’t be incredibly cruel? Who said a thief couldn’t bear the air of mowing down people like cutting grass?
Inside, Hank was vicious.
Yang Yi squatted down, looked at Hank seriously and said, "Although you want to kill me, you’ve been in solitary for a week, so I forgive you."
Hank’s eyes were still hazy, showing no reaction to Yang Yi’s words.
"Stop pretending, your act is useless in front of me."
Yang Yi spoke indifferently, stood up, took a large piece of chocolate from his stash and squatted down in front of Hank again, whispering, "Hungry?"
Hank’s head moved slightly, glancing at the chocolate in Yang Yi’s hand, but he didn’t speak.
Impatiently, Yang Yi said, "Stop pretending in front of me. I’ll give you three seconds. If you snap out of it, I’ll give this to you; if you continue with this breakdown act, then just go and die, one."
Immediately, Hank spoke in an extremely weak voice, "I’m starving, I’m dying of hunger."
Yang Yi nodded and said, "Hmm, I don’t know whether you’ve regained consciousness, or you were never out of it, but you’ve performed well. Not as well as me, of course. Alright, I have a proposal: be my underling. I’ll provide you with food and protection."
Without hesitation, Hank said, "Okay, give me food..."
Yang Yi suddenly waved his hand, annoyance on his face, "That’s not right, I hate this. Hmm, let me think. We’ll call a truce. I won’t bully you, and you won’t think about killing me. Because you’re useful to me, I want to change our current situation. You should also be more honest. I know you’re not as weak as you seem, but you like to play dirty, which makes me feel very insecure."
Yang Yi stood up and then took out a rope twisted from bed sheets. Squatting in front of Hank again, his face void of emotion, he said, "If you lie to me, I’ll strangle you to death and hang you on the bed, telling the prison guards you committed suicide. So, if you don’t want to die, you’d better tell the truth."
Hank tried to prop himself up with his hands to sit, but he was too weak, so he lay back down on the ground and said in an exceedingly feeble voice, "I’ve barely had anything to eat this week, just drank water twice and had a couple of small slices of bread, I’m starving to death, give me something to eat."
Yang Yi handed Hank the chocolate he had in his hand, and Hank grabbed it and bit open the packaging like a madman.
Hank had a particular way of eating chocolate. He put the chocolate into his mouth with his right hand, and spread his left hand between his right hand and nose. That way, others couldn’t see what he was eating and couldn’t snatch it from him.
Hank ate the chocolate quickly, but he nibbled it off in small bites.
Hank finished the chocolate quickly and then looked at Yang Yi with a complicated expression in his eyes.
Yang Yi smiled and said, "Tell me, why did you want to kill me? Tell the truth."
Shaking the rope in his hand, Yang Yi smiled and said, "I can tell if you’re lying or not, and if you lie, I’ll definitely kill you. So you’d better be frank to avoid any misjudgment on my part."
Hank took a breath, then whispered, "I hate being bullied by others, I don’t want to be someone’s lackey, and I don’t want to join a gang. So my only option was to kill you. I’d rather be sentenced to life in prison after killing you than be a pet dog."
Yang Yi frowned and said, "Just because of that?"
"Yes, just because of that."
Yang Yi frowned, but he decided to believe Hank’s words because some people value their independence highly, not the kind lost to incarceration, but the freedom from being someone else’s underling, at others’ beck and call.
Some are willing to join prison gangs to survive and get out of prison faster, but Hank would rather be sentenced to life imprisonment than become Yang Yi’s lackey. It’s just a difference in how much they value the two kinds of freedom.
Yang Yi suddenly stood up, startling Hank, who then looked at Yang Yi warily. But Yang Yi returned to his corner where he kept his things and took out a bowl of instant noodles.
With a bowl of instant noodles in hand, Yang Yi took a thermos from the pile of odd and ends. He opened the instant noodles and poured the hot water from the thermos into it.
Holding the instant noodles that he had just poured hot water into, Yang Yi returned to Hank’s side, squatted down, and smiled at him, "In this whole prison, I’m the only one with access to hot water, the only one who can have instant noodles every night."
Hank couldn’t help but lick his lips.
Yang Yi suddenly said, "Let’s make peace."
Hank was taken aback, then he whispered, "What do you mean?"
Yang Yi smiled and said, "At this point, I can’t accept us having an equal relationship. You still have to be my underling, because I need to learn from you about things like lock-picking, but I won’t bully you or make you do anything for me. You just need to teach me, that’s all. My sentence is almost up, and when I leave prison, we’ll have nothing to do with each other. What do you think of this proposal?"
The aroma of the instant noodles grew stronger, and Hank couldn’t help but swallow saliva, whispering, "I can teach you, but you can’t assign me to do anything, and you certainly can’t restrict my freedom."
Yang Yi shrugged, handed Hank the bowl of instant noodles, and smiled, "Deal, this is yours, but I suggest you wait a while before eating it; it’s not fully steeped yet."
