Chapter 1308: Chapter 1313: Cannot Waste Time
Yang Yi stole a car, Brian and Reggie got in, but after stealing the car, Yang Yi didn’t drive away; instead, he stopped the car less than a hundred meters from the broken car they abandoned.
Reggie was trained, but he still couldn’t quite understand the maneuvers of Yang Yi and Brian.
"Why...aren’t we leaving?"
Brian tilted his head and whispered, "Don’t make a sound, stay in the car and watch."
"Watch what..."
"Watch if Salib is up to something."
Yang Yi patiently explained, he whispered, "We just left Salib not long ago. If Salib wants to do something to us, he has to act quickly. To act, he needs to know where we are. Now that our car is stopped, if Salib really wants to do something, he will come."
Reggie suddenly realized, "Is that why you turned on the interior lights when getting out of the car?"
"Yes, it’s quite simple."
Reggie said nothing more. Yang Yi and the others waited for ten minutes, and nothing happened.
Brian exhaled lightly and said, "Nothing unusual, it seems Salib doesn’t plan to..."
Before Brian finished his sentence, the car they abandoned just eleven minutes ago suddenly started sparking, followed by a frenzy of bullet holes appearing.
Someone was firing; more than two machine guns were shooting at that car.
"Oh, shit!"
Reggie was startled, then immediately covered his mouth. But after a moment, he released his hand and whispered, "They really found us!"
Yang Yi exhaled lightly and said, "Thirty years ago, trackers were very precious high-tech equipment, but now you can buy them online at random."
As Yang Yi finished speaking, two people came running out from the alley beside the shooting. They ran to the car, checked it, and then frantically waved behind them.
Moments later, Salib came running with a PKM machine gun in his arms, after checking the car by opening the door, he decisively ran back into the alley with the machine gun.
Brian chuckled softly, "Pretty decisive."
Reggie exhaled lightly and said, "This guy actually wants to kill us, why? I thought he was pretty nice!"
Brian whispered, "No particular reason. Well, if he could get paid more by killing us, he’d be happy to do it."
"Are we going to take him out?"
Yang Yi shook his head and said, "No, we won’t take him out. We’ve already wasted twelve minutes on him; we can’t waste another minute. We’ll leave when he leaves."
The people firing the machine gun were Salib and his son, but they definitely had other accomplices. Yang Yi didn’t plan on starting a shootout on the streets of Baghdad; he didn’t have the time for it. He just needed to understand Salib’s attitude, that’s enough, nothing else needs to be done for now.
The gunfight had alarmed a lot of people, but no one came out to check. The few rooms that had lights on, now none had them on.
After waiting five minutes, Yang Yi started the car, turned on the headlights, and drove straight out along the road.
It was impossible for Salib to stay put, because staying on the streets of Baghdad after firing a gun and not leaving just waits for someone to take you out.
This time, Yang Yi drove directly towards the direction of the Asad Air Base.
Asad Air Base is one of the most important military airports near Baghdad. Many large military aircraft take off and land here. To maintain its presence in Iraq, this airbase is critical for the United States.
The car drove out of Baghdad, taking nearly two hours to reach the vicinity of the Asad Base.
Yang Yi parked the car by the roadside.
It’s now eleven fifty, Yang Yi wanted to wait a bit longer to enter the military base, making the timing a bit tighter.
At twelve forty, Yang Yi started the car again and stopped three hundred meters before the first gate of the military base.
Any closer without stopping and they’d be shot at by machine guns.
A civilian car approaching at night would definitely receive a barrage of bullets from the U.S. soldiers, already nervously on edge from car bombs, so it was better to stop at a distance.
Brian got out of the car, raised his hands first, and slowly walked towards the first base checkpoint.
The spotlight shone on Brian; in reality, night vision goggles were widely used by the Americans. They had noticed Brian early on, but the spotlight was used to apply psychological pressure on approaching unknowns. It’s not a comfortable and pleasant feeling to have blinding spotlights directly on your eyes.
"Stop! Identify yourself!"
Brian raised his arms and shouted, "CIA, emergency evacuation. I need to catch a military flight leaving Baghdad. Guys, we’re on a tight schedule here, so please hurry."
"Lift your robe!"
Brian lifted his robe, revealing his holster. But this wasn’t a big issue as long as he wasn’t carrying a bomb.
Brian didn’t need further instructions; he turned around to show the sentry his back. Once it was confirmed he wasn’t carrying a bomb, the rest was easy.
Finally, Brian arrived at the checkpoint. A soldier pulled out Brian’s handgun, and after the gun was taken, Brian whispered, "Now take my ID. I’m going to take it out. Tell your officer that someone from the CIA needs to leave from here and ask him to confirm my identity. I have two companions in the car. Let them come over when you feel it’s safe."
A soldier glanced at Brian’s ID. He couldn’t understand it—not that he was illiterate, but he couldn’t verify its authenticity. So he made a call, asking an officer to handle it.
Yang Yi and Reggie also approached. They also had to undergo inspection, which Yang Yi readily accepted. Therefore, Yang Yi and Reggie were escorted away from the checkpoint, their handguns were confiscated, and they were led into the military base under the watch of two soldiers.
Brian left again because he was not convenient to appear inside the U.S. military base, so he left.
Yang Yi felt something might happen inside the military base; he just wondered to what extent the Cleaner had infiltrated the United States. To what degree, if every military base had Cleaner’s people who could be used at any moment, to be honest, such a thing is rather frightening.
Frankly speaking, whether the United States is good or bad now, at least it’s controlled by a bunch of reasonably rational politicians. If it were really controlled by secret organizations like the Cleaner, that would truly be the most terrifying thing.
After walking for a while, Yang Yi and the others were taken to an office. Once inside, a middle-aged man in his forties extended his hand to Yang Yi and said solemnly, "Hello, there’s no need to say anything. I’m here to pick you up. Wait a moment, and we can leave on the same flight."
