Chapter 1228 - 1233: Attitude
Chapter 1228: Chapter 1233: Attitude
A very big question: How did Aaron find out about Yarebin’s death?
Russia’s attitude toward Yarebin is quite significant, and Yang Yi understands this well.
The reason is actually simple—a country’s attitude toward its heroes determines its future. Yarebin was an unsung hero; he could never be someone widely known. But the KGB knows what Yarebin accomplished, and what he once did for the Soviet Union.
The Soviet Union is gone, but Russia’s stance remains important.
If Russia hopes to restore the glory of the Soviet era, they must treat Yarebin with the respect he deserves. If Russia wants to completely abandon everything associated with the Soviet Union, they will handle Yarebin’s case coldly.
Aaron’s focus on Russia’s reaction is easy to understand. He thought Yang Yi might have subordinates who were once Black Devils, so sending Yang Yi to personally investigate—or rather observe—Russia’s reaction also makes sense. Because if Yarebin’s funeral is carried out in secret, sending spies temporarily to investigate might yield nothing.
But having someone who was once a Black Devil handle this becomes much easier.
Nothing more needs to be said. Yang Yi is equally concerned about Yarebin’s funeral. The only thing he needs to do now is head to Moscow.
But hold on, why go to Moscow?
"Why must we go to Moscow?"
Yang Yi asked this question to Anton. Without hesitation, Anton replied, "Because Yarebin must be buried in Moscow."
"Where exactly?"
Anton hesitated for a moment, then shook his head and said, "I can’t tell you—that’s a secret exclusive to the Black Devils."
Yang Yi didn’t press further and solemnly replied, "Alright, I’ll go to Moscow with you—let’s leave now."
"Who else will join us?"
"I’ll notify Anna, and Bonnie will come with me. Everyone else can stay—they’re unnecessary. We’re just going to take a look; there’s no plan to act. One more question: Aaron found out about Yarebin’s death. Where do you think the leak came from?"
Anton hesitated, pondering for a moment before saying, "I’ve been thinking about this too. A leak from within the Black Devils is unlikely, but I also don’t know how many people are aware of the news. So I can’t figure out the channel of the leak."
"Can you ask around? So we can deduce how Aaron found out."
Anton asked in surprise, "Are you sure you want to do that? If I ask, I’ll have to contact the Black Devils. If they find out that this confidential information has reached CIA operatives, it could be quite troublesome."
Yang Yi nodded and said, "Ask if you can. I initially thought it might be problematic, but now I want to know Aaron’s source more than ever."
Anton picked up the phone, dialed a number, and spoke softly after the call was answered: "It’s me. I want to know who can access the information about Yarebin’s death because we’ve found that CIA agents seem to have learned something."
After waiting for a moment, Anton informed Yang Yi, "Currently, Gong Yang is handling Yarebin’s posthumous affairs. He seems to be trying to secure a state funeral for Yarebin, so those who know about Yarebin’s death may include high-ranking officials in the Russian Federal Security Service."
Yang Yi exhaled deeply and said, "So Aaron has a mole in the KGB who learned something but couldn’t confirm it."
"That mole’s level must be very high. Lower-level informants wouldn’t be privy to Yarebin’s situation."
Yang Yi smiled bitterly, "I think the mole’s level is actually not that high. If Aaron’s informant were of a very high rank, Aaron wouldn’t just have vague information; he wouldn’t need me to investigate further."
"What if even the Russians themselves aren’t sure how to handle Yarebin’s funeral? In that case, regardless of how high the mole’s rank is, they wouldn’t be able to give Aaron precise intelligence."
Various possibilities exist. After thinking for a long while, Yang Yi asked, "Do you think it’s impossible for the Black Devils to leak information?"
"Absolutely impossible!"
"Alright, then the scope narrows significantly."
Yang Yi waved his hand and said, "Let’s stop pursuing this—it doesn’t matter much to us. Knowing Aaron has a mole in the KGB is enough. For now, I’ll focus on completing the task Aaron assigned me."
After that, Yang Yi picked up the phone and dialed Anna again. Once Anna answered, he spoke in a low voice, "I have something to tell you—Yarebin has passed away."
Anna’s voice sounded slightly heavy: "When did it happen?"
"Last night."
Annastasia let out a soft sigh: "I’m not sure whether I hate him or admire him, but an era of legends has come to an end. It feels rather unsettling to me."
"As a spy, I understand what you mean by the end of a legend. Aaron wants me to observe how the Russians treat Yarebin. We still don’t know what Gong Yang plans to do, so we can only go and see for ourselves. Do you want to come?"
Annastasia replied without hesitation, "I must go—Yarebin changed my destiny. Whether he was a devil or not, I owe it to him to see whether he is receiving the treatment he deserves."
After that, Annastasia suddenly let out a long sigh and said, "Yarebin hurt many people—calling him a devil isn’t an exaggeration. But for the Soviet Union, he was a saint. I don’t know if you understand."
"I understand. So, you’re coming to Moscow, aren’t you?"
"Yes, I’ll go to Moscow. I also need to ask Brian—I don’t know how he feels about this. This time, I plan to respect Brian’s choice, though I don’t think he’ll want to attend the funeral of his greatest enemy."
After a short pause, Annastasia added over the phone, "Surprisingly, Brian wants to go to Moscow as well."
Brian took the phone and said in a deep voice, "I hate him—I fear him—but I also respect him. I’ll go to Moscow to see what happens to him. Any other questions? If not, let’s meet in Moscow."
"Alright, see you in Moscow."
Yang Yi hesitated for a moment before asking, "What about Kate?"
"She’s not doing well—she’s worried about you. I think you should talk to her. She probably wants to go to Moscow to see you, but whether she can go depends on you."
"Let her come."
Yang Yi ended the call and then asked Anton, "Do you think Russia will give Yarebin the treatment he deserves?"
Anton thought for a long time, then shook his head and said, "I don’t know—I really don’t."
Yang Yi waved his hand and said softly, "Let’s go and see for ourselves."
Anton hesitated. Yang Yi noticed and said, "Say what you want directly."
"This matter has nothing to do with you or the Organization of Water. If I need to do something, I’ll do it as a member of the Black Devils. You really don’t need to get involved. I must also tell you that the Black Devils don’t want Gong Yang involved, even if Gong Yang is Yarebin’s successor."
Yang Yi smiled and said, "Gong Yang is just a mercenary, while we are spies. Or maybe I just want to seek justice for Yarebin."
