Chapter 1211 - 1216: Courage
Chapter 1211: Chapter 1216: Courage
Yang Yi’s face was disfigured, wrapped in gauze, rendering his expressions invisible. No one could tell if he felt shame or anger.
Well, at the moment, Yang Yi felt neither shame nor anger—just a deep sorrow. He was forced to watch Elvin die slowly after enduring endless torture.
It could take a day, a week, a month, or even a year.
In any case, Yang Yi couldn’t fathom where Elvin found the courage to voluntarily deliver himself to the Grey-cloaked People for torture—or the confidence to believe he could endure the pain and still keep his secrets.
Elvin was the first to speak. He didn’t sound angry or puzzled, merely greeted Yang Yi with the indifference of two acquaintances crossing paths.
After a long silence, Yang Yi finally said, "I’m sorry. Although we’re not friends, I didn’t want things to come to this. However, I need a stepping stone, and there’s no one else but you."
Elvin studied Yang Yi, his lips twitching slightly. He said, "I don’t need to ask for your reasoning, but I can’t help myself. Is this because of Xiao Ran?"
"Yes, it’s only because of her."
Elvin let out a long sigh and fell silent again.
Yang Yi spoke softly, "Perhaps to you, this seems like a misunderstanding. But to me, Xiao Ran is my everything."
Elvin immediately responded, "Don’t forget, Xiao Ran is someone we sent to your side. She was trained by us."
Yang Yi’s voice turned cold. "A half-finished product. Don’t forget, she’s just a half-finished product—not even truly trained by you. She’s merely a collaborator."
Elvin stared at Yang Yi coldly for a long while, then glanced sideways at Aaron and sneered. "Do you really think siding with the Grey-cloaked People will get you anywhere? Don’t forget, traitors are despised everywhere. Maybe they’ve promised you benefits, but trust me—you’ll regret it; you’ll definitely regret it! I know what awaits me, but you don’t know what awaits you. Sea God, I’ll be waiting for you in hell. Let’s see who looks better by then."
Yang Yi said nothing, while Aaron stood by, sneering with unwavering confidence. If he feared Elvin would sway Yang Yi, he might have intervened to dispel Yang Yi’s doubts—but he didn’t. That suggested he wasn’t worried at all.
Yang Yi exhaled and said, "Tell me everything you know. Let me kill you sooner so you suffer less. That’s my promise to you."
Elvin replied quietly, "Don’t rush. You’re getting ahead of yourself. Let me ask you something: since you’re siding with the Grey-cloaked People, have you told them who your father is?"
Why would Elvin suddenly ask that?
This wasn’t part of the plan. The plan didn’t account for Elvin being caught alive—nor for exposing Yang Yi’s lineage.
Something had gone wrong. Something had definitely gone wrong!
Yang Yi considered two possibilities: either the Cleaner believed revealing his identity was more advantageous, or the Grey-cloaked People had already learned about his lineage, forcing Elvin to expose it proactively. That way, Elvin could make it seem as though he was retaliating against Yang Yi’s betrayal by leaking information the Grey-cloaked People couldn’t ignore—a move meant to provoke them into killing him.
Aaron merely raised an eyebrow slightly, then watched Yang Yi with evident interest.
After a moment of silence, Yang Yi said flatly, "My father? You never told me why he died. You only said the Grey-cloaked People killed him. And then what?"
Elvin responded quickly, "You joined the Cleaner out of a thirst for revenge. Don’t forget—the Grey-cloaked People killed your parents. You planned to sell out the Cleaner to infiltrate the Grey-cloaked People and investigate your parents’ deaths, so you could exact revenge? Don’t be naïve; you won’t get the chance!"
Elvin seemed pleased, but Yang Yi simply exhaled and said, "Becoming a spy made me realize how meaningless revenge truly is. You might wonder why I betrayed the Cleaner for Xiao Ran when revenge didn’t matter anymore, right? I can tell you—it’s because Xiao Ran is still alive, and you wanted to take her away from me. My parents are already dead; they’ve been dead for over a decade. And why did they die? Was it because they stole information from the Grey-cloaked People, or because they collaborated with the Cleaner?"
Yang Yi posed a rhetorical question, musing aloud, "Can you tell me—if my parents hadn’t worked with the Cleaner and been betrayed, would they still have died? Just like me—I gave you my all and helped you to the best of my ability. And what did I get in return? You wanted to kill me over a mercenary; you crippled Xiao Ran. So, who should I hate? Should I hate you, or should I hate Aaron?"
Elvin’s eyes burned with hatred.
Yang Yi knew his hasty justification was sufficient for the moment. Elvin looked satisfied, though his expression betrayed contempt. He intended to end the topic, so he gave Yang Yi a venomous stare.
The torment of watching a supposed friend—a non-friend—embrace their wretched fate, helpless to intervene, left Yang Yi feeling his heart was being ripped apart.
A wild impulse surged within him: kill Aaron and save Elvin. Yet cold rationality screamed at him to hold back.
Just then, Bonnie murmured softly, "I’m sorry. I choose him."
Elvin glanced at Bonnie, his expression void of emotion, remaining silent.
Bonnie’s face turned pallid instantly. Her voice trembled as she said, "You..."
Elvin said darkly, "Do I know you? Are you trying to say something?"
Elvin pretended not to know Bonnie, likely aiming to put her in danger—or at least, that’s how it seemed on the surface.
If Elvin yelled at Bonnie now, tearing through her lies, she might instead remain safe. But by feigning ignorance and acting as if he wanted to protect Bonnie, the Grey-cloaked People would grow more suspicious of her.
The game—the tactic—real turned false, false turned real. Truth tangled with lies, convincing even when exposed.
Yang Yi let out a sigh and said to Elvin, "Don’t waste your energy. Her cover is already blown. She’s fine now, and she’ll stay fine in the future. Elvin, just tell them everything you know, spare yourself some suffering. That’s the only thing I can do for you."
Elvin didn’t respond; his lips only twitched. Blood trickled from the corner of his mouth. Yang Yi looked at Aaron, who pressed a button and casually remarked, "Watch out for the shocks."
Elvin’s body convulsed violently, his lips finally stilled. Aaron released the button and pried Elvin’s mouth open, inspecting it calmly. "He bit off part of his tongue. It doesn’t impair his ability to speak, though. Seems like he’s determined to stay silent from now on. Let’s resume the interrogation. Would you like to watch?"
