Chapter 120: Chapter 119 Transfer Out
By now, Yang Yi had lived in prison for over a year, with just one more month until he reached a year and a half.
Others in prison count the days on their fingers, feeling like each day lasts a year, hoping to get out one day sooner. As for Yang Yi, however, he experienced years as if they were just days; it felt like only yesterday that he had arrived, and then, in the blink of an eye, more than a year had passed.
Yang Yi didn’t find it boring at all. He was like a sponge, madly absorbing everything he could learn, as well as everything useful. One must know that the prisoners here varied, but they shared one common trait: they were all elites among criminals.
Those who commit petty thefts, hold a gun to someone’s head for pocket change, or are small-time thieves who pick locks aren’t qualified to be locked up in Pelican Bay Prison.
So, Yang Yi’s learning wasn’t limited to just martial arts, how to poison, acting, and how to manage and lead a gang of criminals – those were already quite a lot. However, there was much more to learn from this world’s dark underbelly, and Pelican Bay Prison was the best place to learn it.
After Yang Yi stopped looking for fights every day, he established good relationships with some of the prisoners. Now, if you threw Yang Yi out into the outside world, he was no longer a novice; he was a super top student who had gone through an intensive course at Criminal University.
However, Yang Yi’s efforts to get into the special unit had not advanced at all so far. After talking with Owen once, there was no follow-up, and all Yang Yi could do was wait.
But the problem was that Owen was due to be transferred out in less than a month.
Now Yang Yi was bunking with Hamer Phil, because learning to act was much harder than chemistry or anything of the sort.
"Pay attention to your emotions. You’re playing a gang leader now, so you need to have authority, and where does authority come from? It comes from your power and your status. You can’t always have a deadpan face, you need to convey your status through your gaze and your body language, and then you’ll have authority," Hamer instructed.
Yang Yi moved his shoulders unnaturally, then with a stern face, he coldly said to Hamer, "Is this not right? Am I not the boss?"
Hamer slapped his forehead with his hand and then replied with great annoyance, "Damn it, haven’t I made myself clear enough? You’re not a gang leader, no, no, no. We’re discussing someone with status, with wealth. Being in charge of a dozen people in prison doesn’t make you a powerful boss. And is this how you usually behave? It’s not. You don’t always wear a cold expression, nor do you stare at people with murderous eyes. Think about it, is this how you usually are? If not, then why do you think a real boss would act like you are now?"
Yang Yi rubbed his face with his hand and then said with a wry smile, "I’ve never seen what a real boss is like."
"Ok, think about the President of the United States. The President is one of the most powerful people in the world. What does he usually look like? What about when he’s angry, happy, meeting officials, or attending events and mingling with the public? Think about what his smile looks like," Hamer suggested.
After thinking it over, Yang Yi said, "A smile that doesn’t reach the eyes?"
"Oh, sh*t! What kind of smile is a smile that doesn’t reach the eyes? Show me, try it out, come on!" Hamer challenged.
Yang Yi dejectedly said, "I was just asking, I can’t do it."
Hamer sighed and then helplessly said to Yang Yi, "Some actors resemble whoever they play, while some always look like themselves no matter who they play. You do well when portraying small characters, but you fail miserably when playing those in power."
Yang Yi said helplessly, "I lack life experience."
Hamer shook his head and said, "No, it’s about talent. Think about those great actors. Do you think the actor who plays a psychopathic killer has really killed someone? Do you think the actors who play ancient kings and princesses have truly been royalty? Damn it! That’s acting! If you believe it’s real, it’s because they are that convincing!"
Yang Yi was at a loss for words, then he said awkwardly, "I could make a living off my looks, but I insist on relying on talent."
"Yes, you could be an idol actor, needing only to maintain a single expression to play every role, but then you’d have to go back to Asia. There’s no place for you in Hollywood."
Yang Yi waved his hands helplessly and said, "Okay, let me ponder over it some more."
As Hamer was guiding Yang Yi to produce the correct facial expression, he exclaimed loudly, "Think about it, you’re the boss. You don’t need to read anyone else’s face, you’re confident, so you don’t need to use intimidating expressions to threaten others. Right! Exactly, relax. You’re confident, so you radiate strength from within. Look at me, yes, that’s it, soften your gaze a bit, the eyes are very important..."
While Hamer was coaxing Yang Yi into the right expressions, someone suddenly shouted from outside, "2039, come here, you’re changing cells."
Yang Yi and Hamer looked at the cell door in astonishment, only to see a guard standing outside, tapping the iron door impatiently, then holding handcuffs he said, "Hurry up, don’t dawdle."
Yang Yi stood up, then said in surprise, "Why am I changing cells?"
"It’s an order. I don’t have to explain anything to you. What do you think this is, a place, a hotel? Pack up your stuff now!"
Yang Yi was surprised because nowadays, if he requested to stay with someone, Owen would definitely arrange for that person to be his cellmate. This sudden change of cellmates was a first.
Hamer was stunned for a moment, then he began to pack up his bedding. But just as he began, he looked toward Yang Yi and said regretfully, "It’s a shame I can’t teach you anymore. Honestly, you’re a good student, truly talented. You’re going to be a great actor. I’m really glad to have had this time to teach you, I am really happy. It looks like from now on we can only have lessons during yard time, which is a pity."
After finishing, Hamer continued packing his belongings with resignation, while Yang Yi turned to the guard and said, "I want to see Officer Owen."
This guard was new, Yang Yi was sure of it because by now he was familiar with all the guards, but he hadn’t seen this one before.
Yang Yi stopped talking, watched Hamer pack his things, then followed the guard out of the cell.
Suddenly alone again, Yang Yi felt a little uncomfortable. He wondered what Owen was up to.
He definitely needed to speak to Owen, though he’d have to have another guard pass the message. However, this wouldn’t take long.
Yang Yi didn’t erupt in anger. If he couldn’t continue his acting lessons, he’d just carry on with his fitness routine. There were plenty of things he could do. After silently going through a set of boxing moves, Yang Yi suddenly thought of a possibility. Could it be that Owen was preparing him to move to a special unit? Although it seemed unnecessary to remove his cellmate before transferring him to a special unit.
