Sleeping With The CEO -
Chapter 253: Show Then Tell
Chapter 253: Show Then Tell
For the longest time, Derek had been of the mind that he did not like long car rides at all. After all, no matter how expensive the car. How big and spacious the back seat of the limousine was. Or how fast the sports car you were in could go, that did not matter. At the end of the day, you were still cooped up in a piece of metal that could kill you if something were to go wrong.
Then of course, there was that whole thing where, if you were driving alone somewhere staying awake and alert was very difficult to do. But even when one hired a driver staying awake and alert was still difficult.
Whenever Derek saw it fit to have a driver. For a particular trip, he often found himself sitting at the back. Bored out of his mind to the point where the only thing that he could think to do to pass the time, was work.
But even though he did it for a living, that did not mean that Derek enjoyed going through various documents for hours on end, while stuck in a car. There was of course another option. That other option was great for not nodding off. But it was awful for everything else, and that was sharing a car with other people.
Thanks to some very ill-advised decisions in his youth. Derek now knew for a fact that it was a very bad idea to share a limo with people who had been drinking. Especially those who treated drinking alcohol as a sport where nobody won until everybody was wasted beyond belief. No matter how good the majority of the crew was at holding their liquor. There was always that one person who at the slightest swerve of the car took the opportunity to just start throwing up chunks. Not only was it not a pretty sight.
The smell was also something that was not easily forgotten. Derek still shuddered at his memories of such events. It was a wonder that he had not been scarred for life. But even as a much wiser, fully grown adult now, Derek still did not like sharing with other people. Because now, most of the time when he shared a car with other grownups. They were either talking about business, or pretending not to talk about business. While they were actually closing deals without being specific about it.
Nothing said boring like sitting in the back of a car going from point A to point B. All the while making decisions that would affect the life of millions and generate billions in income. Profitable boredom, but still boredom at the end of the day.
Those were the experiences that had helped to shape Derek’s view on cars and being in them for too long.
Boring.
That was how he had always seen things. But as it turned out, Derek had been sharing the car with the wrong people. All it took to show him that was just a little bit of time with Emily by his side.
The endless road stretching before him. Even in the beginning when Derek had thought that Emily was asleep because her chair was reclined and her eyes were closed. He had not been bored. Instead, he had been content to just sit in silence and listen to her breathe.
The only reason that he had asked her if she was still awake, was because he had wanted to turn on the music. Had she not answered, he would have just continued to drive on without any songs playing. But Emily had beaten him to it. Going for the radio after she had opened her eyes, and shown him that she was not asleep.
Where Derek would have gone for his own personal playlist, she had decided to just flip through the radio stations until she found something that she liked. And that was how they ended up singing a duet. Even for songs that did not need two singers. The two of them belting out tunes. Butchering lyrics and laughing freely as they did so.
Emily’s laugh warm and genuine. Nothing at all like the fake laughs that Derek was used to whenever he talked business with people whom he’d often shared car rides with in the past. When she smiled at him, her smile was not dimmed by alcohol.
She was stone-cold sober and so was he. But the two of them were having more fun than Derek had ever had in any car ride before. He would have loved for things to continue just like that. For them to reach their destination with that light-hearted mood, still in place between them.
But then Emily, being herself, had to go and switch things up on him without her even realizing what she was doing. They were at a lull in their conversation. The two of them not singing along to the radio. Instead listening quietly to the instrumental piece that was playing. Things should have carried on like that. With them waiting for the song to end, so that they could sing along to the words of the next one. But that was not what happened.
When Derek saw Emily reach for the bag that she had brought with her. He thought nothing of it, simply tracking her progress from the corner of his eye.
Thinking that she was just about to have a snack, Derek turned his full attention back to the road. Which is why, seconds later, he was shocked when he felt something pressing against the corner of his mouth.
"Eat up," Emily said, and Derek’s mouth opened on autopilot, and he bit down, chewing
on a piece of banana as he continued to drive. She fed him like that, moving from the banana to a carefully peeled orange.
Then once Derek indicated that he’d had enough. There was a straw against his lips and he sucked on it. His dry throat instantly getting relief, as he gulped down some cool water. Only once Derek was done, did Emily turn her attention to feeding herself.
She was too busy munching on some grapes to see him turning his head towards her from time to time.
’Do you know you do that? Do you know how caring you are?’ Derek wanted to ask her, but he held it all inside. She was Emily Molson. She was his girlfriend.
He should not have been surprised at all. When she had been just his PA. She had often put him ahead of herself. Keeping him posted on what he had to know about certain clients. Topics to avoid, and conversations that they were certain
to latch on to if he were to bring them up.
Back then, Derek had always thought that it was because she was his personal assistant and he paid her. But now the care that Emily was showing towards him. Given so freely without a second thought. Was not being done because she was being paid.
It was done because she cared.
’I love you,’ Derek’s inner voice whispered, and Emily did not hear it. But that was not important. Before she heard it, he would show it to her first. And the place where he was taking her. Was the first of many in his quest to show her just how much, he cared about her.
