Chapter 169: Ready For Another Round
But in truth, he had woken up the moment that Emily had started to move around. He had felt her painstakingly remove herself from his hold. Through it all, he had wanted to open his eyes. To get up and talk to her. But he had been unable to. His brain and his body both stuck in some sort of limbo, where he was aware of everything going on, but he could not partake. It had been a very strange feeling.
Made even stranger by the fact that despite being stuck in his own body Derek had not felt the need to panic at all. Instead, when he’d had Emily in the bathroom, he had managed to gather up enough energy to reach over to her side of the bed, the residual warmth that she had left behind, doing wonders to calm him even more. By the time that she had opened the bathroom door and headed into the bedroom. Derek had been even more aware, than when he had first felt her starting to move around. But still he had been unable to move, unable to open his eyes. All that he had done, all that he had been able to do really, was to just lay there and listen as she did her best to stay quiet while she gathered her things. It was only once he’d heard the easy to miss sound of his bedroom door opening and closing that Derek had been able to get his body back online, his arms and legs twitching. Movement slowly returning to him.
When he finally managed to force his eyes open, Derek found himself staring at the pillow that Emily had used the night before. Just like the sheets. It was rumpled and when he looked closer, he could just about make out the shape of her head on the expensive material.
Emily Molson, slept here last night, it seemed to say. Reaching over, Derek splayed a hand over the pillow. Trying tonsee of he could still feel traces of her warmth. There was none, she had been gone long enough for her side of the bed to cool down. So rather that, residual body heat, all that Derek came back with, was a single strand of long hair.
Emily’s hair.
Sniffing it would have been weird, no matter how happy Derek was, that Emily’s presence seemed to be the cure for his insomnia. So rather than do anything with it, he put it back down. The cleaning staff would deal with it when they came in. With a few more minutes left until his alarm went off. Derek rolled over until he was on his back, staring up at the ceiling.
A huge smile stretched his face, and there was nothing he could do to remove it. Not that he would have wanted to, even if he could.
Finally he had found a cure. He could finally go to bed at night, and sleep just like the rest of the world.
Rolling over again, Derek found himself on Emily’s side of the bed. He breathed deep and her lovely scent was instantly all around him. His body relaxing unconsciously, Derek’s fingers flexed over the sheets, his mind trying to remember everything, that he could recall about the night before. From Emily’s softness, her body easily fitting against his to the way that her breaths had come slow and sure.
Lulling him into sleep when he had thought that everything had failed. He barely even remembered the moment when sleep had taken hold of him, but if he focused long enough, he could almost feel the pleasant thrum of Emily’s heartbeat against him. She had a nice heartbeat, Derek thought, warmth blooming in his chest. He could not even find it in himself to admonish himself for such a sappy thought, because it was true.
There was something about the steady rhythm of Emily’s heart that just made Derek feel as though everything in the world would be just fine. The soft bump, bump, of it as it pumped away had been very soothing. Laying in bed, Derek let his thoughts drift aimlessly for a while longer. He thought of busoness meetings. He imagined his uncle in a tutu( a terrifying thought, that he quickly cut off). He even imagined himself as a cloud. With Emily being the wind that pushed him from point ro point. That particular thought, Derek found pleasant. So he did not cut it short. Instead, he just lay there, and imagined how wonderful it would feel. To have Emily’s calming presence around him all the time.
Now that, would be a perfect world.
But reality called, and soon enough his alarm went off. Derek forced himself to get up, leaving the comfort of his sheets where Emily’s scent was the strongest. With a sigh, he kicked off the bed covers and got up. Reaching up, he stretched. Multiple popping sounds came from his body and Derek lifted an arm, gently massaging the side of his neck. The world was sharper, brighter, but not in the way that made his eyes hurt as was usually the case. Now it just felt as though he had gotten a new pair of glasses and they allowed him to see the world with 20-20 vision. Whistling, Derek made his way to his bathroom to go and get ready for work. Given the night that he’d had, no doubt the day would be spectacular and he could not wait.
Even more than he was looking forward to going about his day without the background aches and pains that came from lack of sleep. Derek was waiting for one more thing. To see Emily again once they got to work. And not only that, to sleep with her again. And given that it was a Friday, it was more than likely that that would happen.
