Sleeping With The CEO -
Chapter 101: Extra Two
Chapter 101: Extra Two
It was Monday, the day that Emily, not the real one. But the imaginary one that he had created, who had not quit, but was on time off, was supposed to be coming back.
And that was the problem with Derek’s whole plan. It had hinged around Emily coming back and the two of them pretending like she had never meant to leave for good in the first place. But the plan had failed...dismally.
The last time that Derek had heard from her, it had been when she had been telling him that there was absolutely no way in hell that she would be coming back to Haven Group. Since then, he had been too ashamed, and too scared of her, to reach out and beg her to come back.
Derek Haven was not a man who bowed to anyone, but for her, he would have crawled on all fours if he had to. If that was what she would have demanded in order to come back, then he would have done it...gladly.
But Emily had already told him, out of her own mouth that she was not coming back. And she was a stubborn one. It was a trait that Derek liked about her, especially when she was acting as a shield between him and the outside world. Giving him a bit of time to gather himself, and refusing to step aside even when people who were her seniors ordered her to.
But now that stubbornness was being used against him and he felt like screaming. He had not had her well brewed tea in weeks. After a hard night of not sleeping, there was no one to cheer him up by buying him blueberry muffins. Emily just knowing that he needed cheering up even when she did not know why he needed it.
There was no one to share the latest gossip in the office with him like she did sometimes. And when his head was killing him( something very common with insomnia) there was no one to turn off the bright lights in his office to give his aching eyes a bit of a rest.
The last one Derek could have done for himself, as he often did whenever Emily was busy. But now that she would no longer be doing it at all, he did not want to do it either. An aching head, and painful eyes were nothing that he could not withstand. But all of the hours that he spent awake had a new torture to them now.
In the past, his silver lining used to be that come morning, he would get to go to work and pretend as though everything was normal, that he had slept as other people had. But now he was realizing that it was not just the work that he had been looking forward to. Seeing Emily had been something that had helped him get through the day. And now he did not have that anymore, and pretty soon, the whole of Haven Group would know that Emily was not going to come back.
He had been thinking about it over the weekend and had come up with a way to make it a clean break, for both of them. Emily was not coming back, she had made that much clear.
So what he was going to do was head down to HR. Go to Padma’s office directly, sit down, make a bit of small talk, and then just drop the news on her.
"I received a message from Emily late last night. She told me that she had been using her time off to think about what it was that she really wanted out of life. Unfortunately, Haven Group is not it. She says she wants to see what more the world has to offer, and has informed me that she will not be coming back. Please draw up the relevant paperwork, and process her resignation quickly," The speech was perfect, flawless.
Emily would get what was due to her, and a little bit more, Derek would be adding a few more zeroes to her money, out of his own pocket. Even if she was not coming back, he owed her at least that much. People like her were hard to come by. And even when she had realized his deception, she had not come barging in, guns blazing, armed to the teeth with lawyers.
All she had done was chew him out, but she had not pursued any legal action. Even if she had, Derek would have gladly paid the price.
But she had not done that, nor had she come to Haven Group headquarters to straighten things out. No, it was Derek’s mess, and she was leaving it up to him to clean it up.
Which was why he was currently in the situation that he was in. When he had come to work in the morning, the plan had been to just head over to HR and get it over with. But then he had remembered that he had a very important call to make and had quickly made his way to his office.
Once there it was easy to get distracted by things. Handling this and that. Putting out a fires here and there.
’You are stalling, just get it over with, go down there and tell Padma that Emily is not coming back, she left for good,’ Derek had pushed that sorely mistaken part of himself away and continued to focus on his work he had a few more things to attend to and then he would go...for real this time. Which was why, when there was just an hour left in
But somehow, things just kept popping up. Things that needed him to stay in his office and not go anywhere near the human resources department.
The fact that not going near the human resources department meant that he got to keep the fact that Emily was never coming back to himself a little while longer was just a coincidence. But with just under an hour to go until the end of the work day, the choice of whether or not to go to human resources was taken away from him.
Human resources, in the form of Padma, came sauntering into his office, and sat down on the other side of his desk.
"Emily still has not returned, is there a particular reason why?" This was it, his chance to sell the story that he had been practicing
But Derek was betrayed by his own tongue.
"She actually called to tell me that she had come down with some sort of bug, so I told her to take an extra two weeks on top to make sure she was as fit as a fiddle when she came back," At this point Derek was lying so much he actually felt the need to check that his nose had not grown any longer.
Padma did not look pleased at all that he had over stepped onto her territory, but he was still her boss. She left after a few more minutes in his office, and only then did Derek let his calm exterior drop.
His shoulders slumping, his forehead coming to rest against his desk with a dull thud. His lie was getting old, and every time he had a chance to get rid of it, it clung tighter and just got bigger.
Two more weeks! What had he been thinking?...
