Chapter 100: One More Lie

Chapter 100: One More Lie

It was Friday night, the day when Emily’s ’time off’ was officially supposed to end. And needless to say, she was panicking.

Earlier that morning, right after they had finished having breakfast, her mom had looked right at her, a big smile on her face.

"Well, you must be happy, come next week you will be headed back to work. Slaying dragons and riding tigers in the big corporate jungle," It had been a happy statement. Her mother expressing joy at the fact that Emily would finally be getting out of the house regularly and doing productive things with her time. Were Emily not a lying, liar who was lying to her own mother, she would have been cheered by it.

Instead she had felt her stomach drop. She had known then and there that her time was up, that she should just give up on her employment lie and tell the truth. It would have been the smart thing to do. But had Emily been smart about such things, she would have never told the lie in the first place. And in that moment she had proven once again that she had not learned her lesson when it came to lying.

Rather than coming up with the truth and just laying it out there...she had lied...again. But to be fair, Emily was of the mind that it had not really been a new lie. Afterall, it was a lie that she had told in continuation to her first lie.

An extension, yes, extension had sounded much better in her head, so she had chosen to go with it as she had looked her mother right in the eyes and told yet another story that was not at all the truth. In fact, it was the exact opposite of the truth.

Instead of saying " I am not going back because I quit six weeks ago," Or softening the lie a bit and saying " Actually, I have been doing some soul searching, during my time off, and I have decided that Haven Group is not right for me, so I am just going to quit,"

Emily had gone for the option that would prolong her suffering.

"Oh, I forgot to tell you, I actually called the office yesterday and asked for an extension on my time off. It took a bit of wrangling, but I finally managed to get them to agree. And even better, my salary will be paid in full, no deductions for me," She had lied through her teeth, not even batting an eyelid at the end of it. By the time she uttered her last word, not even butter would have melted on her tongue had she been asked to taste it.

Her mom, fully trusting that she had raised Emily to be someone truthful, had not even looked closely at the statement. She had not even tried to look for the possible lies. Jane Molson had just taken her daughter at her word and that had been that. She had picked up her bag and headed out the door, going to work. Leaving Emily, a still very jobless Emily to stew in her lies and deceit.

She had been doing that since morning, alternating between checking if any of the places she had applied to had reached out, and pacing around the house.

But as the hours had gone on, Emily had come to a slow realization. Granted, she had known it all along, but now, looking at her haggard reflection in the bathroom mirror( she had shut herself in there in an effort to stop herself from pacing a hole into the carpet), Emily finally accepted something.

"This has got to end," She told herself.

"It is bad enough that you are lying to her about your nightmares being gone. Now you are lying about the fact that you quit your job. Tell her, the longer you keep this a secret, the harder it will be for you to tell her...you can do this," Her reflection was very wise, and Emily was definitely going to listen to it.

Right on cue, she heard the front door open and her mom call out "I’m home!" Emily looked at the closed door and figured that the truth could wait a few more minutes.

"I am in the bathroom, I will be out in a sec," She called out. Leaning over the sink, she splashed some cold water on her face, trying to make herself more alert.

Taking one last look at her reflection, she nodded at her mirror self.

This was it, the moment of truth. She was going to go out there and she was going to say ’ Mom, I have something to tell you. Remember when I said that I had taken some time off a few weeks ago? Well, I lied. I did not take time off, I quit. I am sorry that I lied to you. Please forgive me,’ There, as easy as anything.

She just had to fess up to what she had done and hope that her mother would not be too disappointed. Turning the door knob, Emily walked through the narrow hallway that led to the kitchen and the living room. She found her mom in the kitchen, pouring herself some mango juice from the jug.

"Hey, honey, how was your day?" She said in greeting, giving Emily a quick smile before turning her back to her and reopening the fridge.

Emily opened her mouth, ready to just blurt out the truth and hope for the best.

"Mom, I have something to tell you," She began, but then her phone vibrated, and she pulled it out of her pocket.

We need a waitress by tomorrow, nightshift only. Are you still interested?

The text was from an out of the way diner that Emily had applied to, Bee’s diner. She was texting back yes before she even had time to process.

"Yes, honey?" Her mom prompted, causing Emily to look up from her phone.

"I got a waitressing gig at a diner, the pay is not bad, but I will be working nightshift throughout," Her mom took a sip of her juice, considering.

"Nightshift is a raw deal," No it was not, not for Emily anyways.

"But since it is temporary, I think you should be alright for a short while," And that was it. Rather than freeing herself with the truth, Emily had once again tied herself more firmly into her lie.
