Sleeping With The CEO
Chapter 102: New Job

Chapter 102: New Job

Working nightshifts was the pits. It was absolutely horrible. Not only did it mean having to change your sleep schedule to match your working hours. It meant less time with friends, and not getting to see your family as much as you wanted.

That was what Emily assumed most people would usually say when asked about their thoughts on working late at night while most of the world was fast asleep in their beds. But Emily was not in agreement with most of the world. She was now a nightshift worker and it was great, fantastic even.

She had never had many friends to begin with, and then when she had started workings the demanding hours at Haven Group, most of the fragile friendship bonds that she had created had just faded away. When it came to family she had her mom. But Emily was also actively lying to her mom about still being employed at Haven Group. So the less she saw her, the less bad Emily felt. Sure she missed cooking dinner with her, and doing little things like just sitting on the couch watching a show together. But being away from her mom meant Emily did not have to think about her lie very much, so that made their brief contact worth it.

And when it came to the no sleep thing, working at the diner was just perfect for Emily. At the diner, her staying awake through the night was not only accepted, it was praised. Her alertness meaning that customers were served well. And when she got home, she could have her little bit of sleep and then just wake up and be up and about. Not having to embroider in an effort to keep herself occupied while she stayed in bed so that her mom would not know that she was up.

So all in all, the nightshift at Bee’s was a sweet gig. It was just her and the cook, the older man preferring to stay in the back, and cook, not really saying much to her. Which was just the way Emily liked it. Not saying much to each other meant they did not have to pretend like they were fast friends. They were just two strangers trying their best to make a living, that was where their relationship began and ended. Emily was absolutely fine with that.

Plus, the diner, being close to a police station, was pretty safe, so Emily was okay being up front on her own. She took orders, and served customers as they came and in. Most of them, given that they came in the dead of night were usually very quiet, obviously tired and just wanting to eat their food in silence. During the moments when the diner was dead silent, the wave of customers having cleared out, leaving Emily to anticipate the arrival of the next wave, she kept herself busy.

Whether it was wiping down tables, sweeping the floor, checking the recently vacated seats for spilled food, or sometimes even forgotten wallets( the number of people who forgot their wallets, and phones was just astounding). When she was not doing that, she could usually be found mopping up some variety of liquid from the floor. The food kind, like milk, coffee, tea, even syrup, she could handle. Even though she had only been there a few days, Emily had already made up her mind that such things were fine. The one and only time she’d had to clean up puke at the diner, Emily had not had a great time( drunk college kids really needed to find better places to be sick). No doubt she would be doing it again at some point in the future, but she was not looking forward to that at all.

But other than that, working at the diner was great, just great.

She did not miss working at Haven Group at all. Wiping extra hard at a stain on the table that she was currently working on, Emily tried to get herself to believe her own lie, but she could not.

She missed, Haven Group...missed Derek, like crazy. Sometimes out of the blue she would find herself just thinking of him.

How was he? Was he sleeping enough? Was he eating enough? Was he pacing himself and not trying to work himself into an early grave? She really hoped that whoever his new personal assistant was, they did not let him bully them into filling his schedule to the brim.

No matter what he might say, he needed his rest too. Did the new assistant brew his tea just right? Did they know that blueberry muffins never failed to get a secret pleased smile out of him. Did they know that he loved knowing what was going on with the employees, and did they eavesdrop for him and keep him updated, while eating lunch in the park with him?

They were little things, not really important in the grand scheme of things, but they were important to her. She wished that she had not left as abruptly as she had. She should have pushed through the pain that her sleeping problems were causing her. At least if she had hung on just a little bit longer, instead of making her time off her notice. Maybe then she could have been more at ease. If she had served her notice, she would have been sure to train her replacement well, to let them know everything that they needed to keep Derek happy, and healthy.

Sharing all of the precious knowledge that she had acquired about him over the years would have hurt. But to do it knowing that he would have been well taken care of, would have made the pain all worth it.

But she had quit so that he would never get to see her crumble. And now she had gone and lied to her mom about still being employed there. So whenever her mom brought up Haven Group, she smiled and nodded along like it did not feel like a knife to the heart.

But the pain would fade with time, it had to. Afterall, she had given herself an extension to hold on to the lie, once the two weeks was up, she would have to face reality and tell the truth.

The door bell rang and Emily startled, realizing that her mind had drifted, something that was happening more and more, thanks to her not sleeping right, proof that quitting Haven had been the right thing to do.

"Hello, welcome to Bee’s, take a seat and I will be with you shortly," She greeted the newcomers, a young man with a baby strapped to his chest.

Single dad, she thought, and her smile turned more genuine. She had a soft spot for single parents after being raised by one.

With that, she threw herself into her work. Forgetting all about Derek Haven for a while.
