Chapter 181: On The Brink Of Nightmare
Chapter 181: On The Brink Of Nightmare
It is known in all the magical realms that only a few handfuls of old Sprites had the power of foresight... an ability to see a glimpse of the future and give a prediction. But their seeings were never subjective, instead, it comes in patterns and even them can’t entail their visions completely, it comes like a riddle most of the time. The name ’seer’ was just the name given to the oldest Sprites who have sure power... a power which was borrowed when they indulge themselves in various magical practices, and as you know a power that was not born with is considered incomplete as well as its abilities, it is not perfect.
In order words there has never been a pure-blood Soothsayer before.
If Aldon words are true then it could very well mean Estel doesn’t just connect and break, she connects and sees the future, one Aldon has managed to connect to and see.
Eyes, breath that breathes fire, scales, and wings?
Surely he didn’t see it completely. Maybe that is why he was yet to slit my daughter’s throat.
Estel has caught his sick fascination.
"Aldon" I began as his eyes darted away from my sleeping daughter in his arms and then to me.
"Do not fret, Aveline, your daughter is special"
"That doesn’t ease me one bit," I said with clenched teeth and he offered me a smile.
"Her power is too great, even if I don’t kill her then it will. This power defies many things"
"That is me to decide!" I shook. "Please give me my daughter"
"Begging now are us?" he mused as he rested my daughter on the platform and I whimpered as I pound on the barrier with my fist, the deep yearning to hold her in my arms overcame me like a storm.
I haven’t even held her once and yet I was going to watch my greatest nightmare come to life.
My heart was failing and squeezing with unimaginable pain watching my sleeping daughter... ignorant of what was about to happen. She looks so beautiful and at peace, she has William’s pale skin too.
She is truly beautiful.
"She may be special, Aveline, but I won’t go back on my word," Aldon said sternly, all sense of amusement gone.
I screamed pounding on the barrier desperately the moment I saw him pull out a dagger, the exact dagger I saw in my dreams... one capable of taking the life of a magical being, forged by my people as a precaution to danger my naive people thought would come to them.
My own people’s weapons will be used to slaughter my daughter.
"NO!!!!" I screamed falling to my knees and breaking into tears.
My nightmare was coming through, I will stand here helpless and watch as my daughter is taken from me.
"Please, Aveline... I do this for us... she keeps us apart and I can’t let that happen, you have to understand!"
"Aldon, please no! I will stay with you for eternity but please not her, she doesn’t deserve this!"
"Oh, she does" he rotated the dagger on his fingers and my heart jumped so drastically. "She is the reason we cannot be together and I won’t let that happen, special or not, she should not have been born" he launched the dagger toward her throat.
"ALDON NO!"
I will watch as my daughter bleeds out from her tiny throat, I will stand at the other side and watch helplessly. Not her... please gods, not her, I promise myself I will see her grow up into a wonderful woman... I promised I would hear her soft giggles that plagued my senses. Watching her tiny feet run around the library and get to see William hold her in his arms and it will be nothing but joy.
Was it too much to ask for... to ask for the impossible, I have always been selfish and yet I still am and I prayed nothing more that I would be able to protect a blessing William and I created.
And yet here I was... watching as the dagger went closer and closer to her throat and it was at that moment Estel opened her eyes.
I think I died the instant the dagger pressed on her throat and the horror that filled me when a trail of blood slid down her frail neck and her cries echoed in the temple.
I have never known pristine pain... the horror of watching Aldon take my daughter away from me, but his struggling broke me from my pained trance... because Aldon was suddenly struggling, his other hand holding onto the one holding the dagger... like he was trying to get it to move further but it couldn’t, it looked paralyzed but that wasn’t the case.
Because ice instantly formed on that exact hand, moving at speed and right before my eyes the ice broke apart instantly, and his right hand alone with it.
It was screaming next, screams that took over the entire place and I was just there with wide eyes paralyzed because I knew.
That isn’t my magic.
And then I heard it, the sound of a whooshing portal, followed by footsteps and a familiar scent that instantly filled my nose and rendered me more numb, but the aura that followed was icy... yes familiar and I could recognize it anywhere... but it was oddly familiar like the very bringer of darkness, hanging the air and making it impossible to breathe because the amount of killing intent was just too familiar.
And so I turned my head and I stopped breathing.
William was the one who emerged from the portal marching toward us in haunting footsteps, his long silver hair swirling behind him, dancing freely with the wind that came so strongly but it didn’t carry warmth like it was meant to... but the harshness of the cold.
"William," I mumbled.
But I noticed his eyes were focused on a wailing Aldon, eyes I now noticed were covered by a white blindfold.
