Chapter 154: The Story Of Yin And The Fox Guardian {2}

Aveline couldn’t wipe the smile off her lips, it was merely glued there until she was back to Aethel. This was the first time she has come back from her secret exploration, smiling, she was normally ever sad knowing that he wouldn’t remember her and it was no use going to watch him anymore, but now it was different, there was a solution, she can somehow relate to him without bothering about him forgetting, they can be friends.

But Aveline didn’t want to depend on that because he was still meant to not remember her until she came to him, so Aveline promised herself that she would find a way to control her powers. Even though it was impossible... but she will never know without trying.

Humming a tone Aveline walked through the woods but she paused when she saw a certain crowd, murmurs could be heard. Puzzled, she walked towards there, and at her mere presence they quickly bowed in respect and Aveline blushed at their actions. She catches sight of her father and she rushes to him.

"Father!"

"Where have you been Aveline?!" he demands, looking her up and down to see if she was hurt or anything.

"I-I was playing far in the woods" she lied. Aveline hasn’t lied to her parents before or Aldon, but if it means keeping her friendship with William she would gladly do it.

’William’ she thought, remembering when he told her his name and she couldn’t get it out of her head.

"Listen to me... you will not go anywhere without a knight anymore do you understand?"

Her eyes went wide with panic, anything but this! If a knight was at her side she can no longer sneak around and head to the deepest parts of the woods where the barrier loop is. But why a knight? Aethel was the safest place, there was no danger at all, and everyone was friendly to each other. Elves were a tribe that never had ill intent with one another, they were the most peaceful magical creatures ever to live.

That is why the barrier was created around Aethel by the first king and Queen, elves were deemed to be too kind and can be easily destroyed because of it, that is why the elves lived apart in hiding and away from any civilization.

"Father, did something happen?" Aveline asked curiously, her father looked distressed and his silver eyes held disarray and hysteria.

"Father!"

"Go home Aveline," he motioned to one of the knights and with a bow took Aveline hand even at her protest, she turned back to her father but her attention darted to the parting of the group, her eyes went wide when she saw a trail of blood.

Angry she forced her hand away from the knight hold who called to her as she ran, and even her father did too but Aveline didn’t stop as she forced her way through the crowd and she went still when she saw the scene.

Alwin and his friends lay dead on the ground, but she couldn’t tell which was which because they were nothing but pieces.

Aveline screamed.

"You should have listened to your father Aveline!" her mother snapped at the girl but she regretted raising her voice for Aveline was still in shock, her knees to her chest and she was shaking.

She wishes her daughter hadn’t seen such a scene, it must have been traumatizing for her.

Her mother sighed. "They were your friends, I’m sorry my dear"

Tears spilled from Aveline’s eyes and sobbing sounds followed. "W-What happened to them?"

"We don’t know yet, but we think it was a wild animal"

"A wild animal? Mother, all the animals here are harmless even to fierce ones!"

"Aveline do not think too much about this, your father will handle this alright?"

Aveline said nothing as she lay down still shaken by everything that happened today, her mother covered her up with the sheets before leaving the room.

Aveline couldn’t have a wink of sleep, she couldn’t even close her eyes without seeing the head of Alwin, he was just her age, and yet tragedy took him, a wild animal? Aveline didn’t believe it, Aveline knew the animals here were harmless, was it an intruder? But no one knows the elves exist.

What could have done such a thing?

Aveline heard footsteps behind and she knew it was no doubt Aldon, she felt the bed dip from his weight and the feeling of him laying next to her. She felt his hand snake her waist and pulled her more to his frame,

"Aldon"

"Yes?" he answered tiredly.

"Alwin and the others"

"I heard, how unfortunate"

She gulped at his words because there was no hint of sympathy from it. Aveline knew he didn’t like them because of their bullying.

"Do you think it was a wild animal attack?"

"Go to sleep Aveline I’m tired"

Her lips trembled and Aveline said nothing else as she closed her eyes. ’Aldon wouldn’t do it right?’ she thought.

’Aldon is not a killer,’

☆☆☆

Aveline could not escape towards the barrier anymore... not with her knight following closely to her all the time, she barely had free time to go anywhere herself because of her father’s orders, and just like that time kept passing and waiting for no one.

Three years passed since the incident, and the incident of Alwin and the others passed like a fade of light and it seemed to be nothing but a nightmare for the people.

One day Aveline was finally able to walk to the barrier, with things calmed down she was able to go off on her own even for a limited time but to Aveline it was like a dream come true because she couldn’t wait to see William and the mere thought of it excited her... and more she has secretly learned English without Aldon’s knowledge. Knowing more about the language and she just couldn’t wait to converse with William without stuttering her words in gibberish.
