Chapter 39: [Class Upgrade]

Chapter 39: [Class Upgrade]

The two suns were at the peak as the lone acolyte worked in the afternoon fixing the water tank at the rooftop. Wiping the seat on his forehead with a napkin, he then sighed as he looked at the clean roof in front of him.

"That’s enough, I suppose?"(Noah)

[Looks clean to me. Almost brand new.](Elios)

There was a slight leakage problem that caused the entire roof to be wet for days, causing trouble not only for the house members but also the neighbours.

Mold grew out of it, creating a smell that was becoming unbearable for the people, especially for Noah who had come to treat a minor injury of a kid going through fever in their house.

Healing the kid didn’t even take a second, but since there was an opportunity, Noah simply offered to clean the top and also fix the issue at hand for free. Clearly they were happy, but still they first denied saying that they didn’t want to trouble Noah more than this.

Still, Noah persuaded them before he finally moved and cleaned the entire thing within the next 10 minutes. It wasn’t exactly a time taking task but just a little tricky given he needed to clean the entire mold first, dry the roof before cleaning the pipes and fixing the leakage along with it.

[You have done great work for society! +75 Karma!]

And of course the reward made him smile before he got off the roof, got a few red apples from the house owner, and politely left from there.

It had been 4 hours since he came here to the south-side, and he had already finished 50 of the 60 tasks. Most tasks took mostly a few seconds, and even the additional surrounding tasks were easier to do with the spells he had.

And now since he had 3 more hours to deal with the other 10 tasks, Noah pondered if he could utilise the extra time he had, in any way.

[Are you going to take 100 tasks tomorrow?](Elios)

Hearing Elios’ question, Noah paused as he was confused. Wasn’t that the best thing to do given they can earn quite a bit of Karma with that?

’Shouldn’t I?’(Noah)

[Well. I was actually pondering about a few things, you know? Given our schedule and how we should go about that.](Elios)

Generally Noah wakes up around 7, gets ready within an hour and then leaves for the daily tasks. The entire day passes before he returns by the evening and starts exercising. If the demon hunt starts by next week, he would spend the night hunting them before sleeping around 2 or 3. That is his rough schedule of the day.

[As you know, I am an Acolyte. One of the guys with the weakest authorities in the temple. I was thinking of changing that to a priest, or perhaps anyone with a better authority. It would give us more privilege within the temple, which would actually better for us in the long run.](Elios)

Hearing that Noah pondered about it. He remembered about the corrupt priests within the temple and somewhat understood what Elios was talking about. Though, he still didn’t like the idea of being a priest himself. It felt restrictive since they probably had more duties than an acolyte.

[There are many paths we can take, but there are three choices that suit us the most.](Elios)

[One is to become a Cleric. It simply means to be a healer. This would allow us to open a clinic where people can come and get treated at some cost, but we can just give it for free. We will still be affiliated with the temple, and will work with them from time to time, but for the most part we can do whatever we want.](Elios)

[Also, we can take on more difficult healing tasks as well. One that requires higher healing than what an acolyte can get](Elios)

Being a Cleric was simply analogous to being a Doctor with a degree.

[The other is to be an Exorcist or an Inquisitor. This is more restrictive than being a cleric but also carries more authority than most of the people at the temple. Half of our days will be restrictive but we would be able to command the priests, clerics at the temple to do our work. We can also take more dangerous missions, killing undeads even during the day. Since we will do it for free, we will gain more Karma than what we earn these days.](Elios)

[Perhaps a single mission would allows us to earn more Karma that we earn in the entire day](Elios)

While being Cleric means people will come to you, in line, allowing you to rapidly earn Karma without moving much, being an Exorcist meant to go to people to earn big chunks of Karma at once.

From the point of earning Karma, these two options were better than what he was doing right now. But thinking deep about it, being a free cleric means closing the businesses for others, which definitely would invite unnecessary troubles.

The menial tasks he did daily didn’t bother the clerics because they thought it was beneath them. As for Noah personally, these were simpler tasks that he liked to do since they were easy ways to earn Karma. And perhaps, being a Cleric, he might not be able to earn a lot of Karma given healing someone always gave 10-20 Karma.

The system always gave less Karma when an individual’s life was involved. Even when he once treated an entire fracture, he barely got 20 Karma from it.

It could be totally possible that it varied from person to person, but honestly he wasn’t too keen on being a Cleric. Both because of the Karma amount and how he needed to mostly sit at once place for a long time.

And as for being an Exorcist or an Inquisitor... the fact that he was going to be bound half of his days was something he didn’t like. He liked how he wasn’t bound by the regulations and was free to do whatever he wanted for the most time.

[Lastly, we can be a full-fledged professor. There are 3 merits and 2 demerits in choosing this path.](Elios)

[The merits are simple. We can earn a reputation within the temple and in outside schools, allowing us to have more authority than usual. It will take time but if we make a few breakthroughs, we might even have authorities equal to the head priest. It will depend on our efforts though.](Elios)

[The professors with merits can give scholarships to students, and even schools for them if they have enough money. Something which aligns our goals for now. But we would need an enormous amount of money for that.](Elios)

[Lastly, we would be able to use our free time outside of teaching to do whatever we want.](Elios)

Noah pondered about the merits and this seemed like a viable path. It didn’t earn him any immediate Karma or money, but the authority, if he is able to earn it, allowed him to do what he wanted to do later.

But still...

’What are the demerits?’(Noah)

[We will need to teach at least 3 classes per week based on a subject of our choice. We also need to submit a thesis once every 15 months and participate in staff meetings called by the head priest. Other than that, there would be works regarding exams and such...](Elios)

It was similar to a college professor’s work, but Noah already anticipated that. Noah still had the advantage of Elios being in his mind, hence a lot of the burden can be easily shaved off. Still the menial work he would need to do once every while stays there.

[As for the other demerit. It’s more of a personal thing given our lives. Up until now we were doing things solo so we didn’t have anyone to really worry about. But if we get students, there are going to be responsibilities that we would need to fulfill. Being a professor or a teacher is akin to being a parent, so we can’t ignore that, especially when our path is extremely thorny.](Elios)

Elios didn’t delve too much into it, but it was easy for Noah to understand. The fact that having someone to care about can be a fatal weakness given his line of work. Especially if someone ended up antagonising him one way or another.

Noah pondered about it for a long while as he went on to help people. And then as he finished the last work, he decided to leave the decision at least until this evening.

If the number of students were less than 10, then that means he wasn’t a good teacher and didn’t need to take this path.

And if there were more, he will think about this in more detail about it.

"Let’s get something to eat first. I am getting hungry from all the continuous work."(Noah)
