Chapter 99: Chapter 99
Lance stayed silent for a long time. He didn’t want to answer Madeline because he wasn’t sure of his feelings.
Madeline made it sound like a big deal, as if it were a ride-or-die situation.
She made it as if she was ready to get married, have children, and grow old together.
But what about him?
Lance wasn’t sure if he could stay with one woman for that long.
Unlike his father, who was never a playboy, or like his big brother, who devoted his love to this one woman he just met, Lance was far more adventurous and wild.
Could he keep this feeling for a long time if he said yes to Madeline’s offer?
But if he said no to Madeline’s offer and kept her as a business tool, then could he bear seeing her being embraced and touched by another man?
He already spent a night with her and realized how much of a deadly seductress Madeline could be.
Lance stared at Madeline for a long time and asked, "Are you playing your TV persona on me? You’re not like this, not the Madeline I talked with last night."
Madeline shrugged. "Rather than a TV persona, I’d call it a business persona instead because you don’t have permission to see that Madeline Rose from last night. We’re only business partners, remember?"
Madeline took the fork, used it to stab a slice of apple and said, "And that real Madeline Rose is only accessible to my real boyfriend, not a contractual one, Mr. Grant."
Madeline put the sliced apple in front of Lance’s mouth, smiling at her like a cute girlfriend feeding her boyfriend.
Lance’s gaze stilled, but he obediently opened his mouth and ate the sliced apple.
"Whether you want to see me in this business persona I put up or the real girl that you saw last night, the choice is yours, Mr. Grant," Madeline said. "Oh, just so you know, I actually prefer you to take me as a business partner instead."
Lance, who had been passive the whole time, finally reacted, "What do you mean by that? You said you love me!"
"Don’t get so worked up, Mr. Grant. I do love you; I’m really fond of you, actually," Madeline said lightly. "And I’m the type whose love would stay for a long time, which is not good in this cutthroat industry, right?"
Madeline picked another sliced fruit with the fork and fed Lance while talking. Meanwhile, Lance still glared at her, wearing obvious displeasure on his face, but he still obediently ate the sliced fruit.
They acted so naturally, as if they had been lovers for a long time, whether they realized it or not.
"And I think I have a lot of prospects for my career in the future. If I keep falling in love deeper with you, I might not be able to kiss another man for the rest of my life."
"And why do you need to kiss another man? You have me!" Lance exclaimed.
"Well, I need to act again, and as an actress, I’d have to kiss a lot of men and probably have plenty of sex scenes with them, right?"
"I will make sure that you will play in action movies instead, or maybe horror or thriller. No romance movies for you," Lance said, as if they had agreed on her terms and conditions. "And also, no sex scene, never."
"You say it like we’ve already made a deal, Mr. Grant?" Madeline smiled. "We’re just a business partner, remember? I’m just a tool for you."
"You’re just saying that to annoy me, Maddy, and I’m already upset because I have to make this stupid decision while I’m still having a headache."
"Look, I’m just giving you the choice. But that doesn’t mean I will force you to give your answer immediately," Madeline said. She poured the half-empty teacup with fresh and warm ginger tea from the pot. "Drink this ginger tea first. It’ll make you feel better."
Lance sipped the ginger tea again and nodded. "Good, because you’re giving me a tough choice to make. I need time."
"Why do you think it’s a difficult choice, Mr. Grant?" Madeline asked. "I think it’s fairly simple. All you need is to tell me that we’re going to keep this strictly business, and I promise you that I will be your biggest moneymaker as long as you give me the chance to prove my worth."
"And let you smooch another man?"
"Can’t be helped," Madeline sighed. "It’s an easy decision to make unless... you actually fell in love with me, Mr. Grant? Oh-ho, wouldn’t that be so funny?"
"What’s so funny?" Lance got triggered. He didn’t outright say that he was in love with her, but that was mostly because he wasn’t sure about his feelings.
"I mean, we are contractual lovers. It would be so ridiculous if we fell in love with each other, right?" Madeline chuckled. "Anyway, I love you, but you don’t need to take me seriously. There will be a time where I find someone who’s hotter and richer than you."
"Hah! You’re talking about the impossible!" Lance claimed proudly. "I am Lancelot Atlas Grant. If you want to find a richer and hotter man than me, then you’re talking about someone imaginary."
Madeline smiled meaningfully. "Well, a less hot and rich version of you would do as well. I’m sure I’ll find someone to settle down with."
"You—!"
Lance was too shocked. He thought she would fold because she had no better option. But Madeline actually wanted to lower her standard just so that she could get him out of her mind.
Madeline got up, walked towards Lance, and boldly sat on his lap. She leaned on his strong chest and said, "Mr. Grant, since you can’t give me an immediate answer, can I ask you a favor instead?"
"What is it?" Lance responded. He still needed to clear his head before making such a big decision. So he wanted to delay it until his heart calmed down and he could think logically. "Do you want more money? Some jewelry? A new car? A custom-made designer bag?"
"Geez, you’re so readable, Mr. Grant. I’m not a gold digger," Madeline pouted. "What I want is... Zane’s phone number."
