Chapter 88: Chapter 88
Madeline noticed that all eyes were on them. Thus, she tried to struggle out of Zane’s arm.
However, rather than releasing Madeline, Zane hugged her even tighter until she was suffocating. "Uhk! Z—Zane! What’s wrong with you?!" Madeline yelled.
Zane was blinded with rage when Madeline claimed she was still Lancelot Grant’s girlfriend.
Even after everything that Zane did for her and how badly this scum treated her, she still chose Lance over him?!
Bullshit.
That was absolute bullshit!
Zane was so angry that he didn’t control his strength while hugging Madeline. "Urk! Z—Zane, you’re hurting me!"
Madeline’s voice snapped Zane out of his blind rage. He checked on his woman and realized that Madeline was choking because he hugged her neck until her face was red.
Lance couldn’t bear to see this anymore. Thus he yelled.
"I said, LET MY WOMAN GO!"
Lance discarded all of his self-restraint and clenched his fist. He punched Zane until the latter fell to the ground.
"Urgh!" Zane lost his grip over Madeline and fell face-first on the beach sand.
"Maddy!" Lance caught Madeline and hugged her gently but firmly. He checked her neck before asking, "Are you alright? "
"I’m okay..." Madeline said weakly as she was still catching her breath. She stared at Lance, wondering if this was just her imagination, but he looked genuinely worried for her safety.
His deep green eyes hypnotized her, almost causing her to forget they were surrounded by so many people right now.
But then she remembered about Zane, whom Lance had punched until he fell. She turned her head and saw Zane standing up with his fist clenched, ready to have a serious fight.
"Madeline..." Zane murmured while staring at Lance and Madeline.
She then checked on Lance, who was also ready for a bloody face-off.
She panicked and yelled at the staff, "Why are you guys standing like idiots? Hold Zane off! Don’t let him fight!"
Zane felt wronged when Madeline suddenly directed all the staff to stop him instead of Lance, since Lance was the one who attacked him first.
Valerie followed Madeline’s command: "Okay, send Zane back to his bungalow before this gets really ugly."
The security guards tried to drag Zane back to the resort, but Zane stood on his ground, staring at Madeline with a face as if her choice hurt him.
"Madeline, why are you doing this to me?" Zane asked.
"Zane, I don’t—"
"I treated you right. I... I genuinely want to be the right man for you," Zane said. "But why are you with that scum? Am I not good enough?"
Madeline zipped her lips instantly.
She didn’t want to tell Zane she was under a contract with Lance.
If it were a normal situation, she would probably pick Zane over Lance simply because Zane is a good man.
But she needed the money and safety.
One thing she knew about relationships was that men’s love could fade over time, just like Jon betrayed his wife and child and Madeline’s father betrayed his family.
But if she could reap the benefits of this short-term relationship with Lance, she would do it in a heartbeat.
Madeline’s silence was like a confirmation for Zane.
He wasn’t good enough.
Maybe he wasn’t rich enough compared to Lancelot Grant.
Or maybe he didn’t have enough connections.
Or maybe... he was too nice, too kind, too patient.
He realized that Madeline didn’t seem to mind being treated like shit by Lance.
"Madeline, I’m hurt," Zane muttered. He looked so vulnerable that Madeline wanted to comfort him.
Madeline wanted him to know how thankful she was for his help. But she had something more than just love for Lance.
She needed his connection to rebuild her career until she could eventually break free from the contract with Lance and stand her ground against the world.
’I’m sorry, Zane. Maybe if we meet again in another circumstance...’ Madeline thought. She looked up at Lance, who was still on guard and glaring at Zane. ’Once this man discards me and if you still want me, then maybe we can start anew, Zane Eastwood.’
"Get that freak out of my face," Lance said coldly. "Kick him out of this resort as soon as possible before I fucking call his agency to cancel all of his upcoming movie roles."
That threat would be enough to scare any movie star. Though they didn’t know Lance’s true extent of connection and power, his surname was Grant, which was enough proof of his power in the industry.
Zane shifted his gaze at Lance, and his eyes turned cold. "This is not over yet, Lancelot Grant."
Zane turned around and finally left by his own accord, followed by the other staff and cast members forced to leave by Valerie.
Thus, only Valerie, Madeline, and Lance have stayed at the private beach.
"Don’t worry, I’ll make sure that bastard is out of the resort as soon as possible," Lance said as he slowly released Madeline from his embrace but was still holding her hand."
Madeline kept on thinking about Zane’s last words to her, which made her feel guilty.
-
’Madeline, I’m hurt.’
-
It was such a simple sentence, but it carried a lot of burden in her heart because she had inevitably hurt a good man who genuinely liked her.
She had become an ungrateful woman who hurt a man who helped her.
That burden felt so heavy in her heart that she became absentminded.
"Madeline?" Lance called her.
"Mr. Grant, can you give me time to talk with Zane first?" Madeline asked. "I just want to make sure he is alright. I want to explain my—our condition."
Lance’s gaze darkened.
"No—and stop calling me Mr. Grant," Lance denied. He didn’t want that covetous bastard to influence Madeline’s mind. "Pack your stuff. You’re moving out with me to my hotel, and we will fly back to Los Angeles by tomorrow morning."
...
Madeline stared at Lance with so much resentment. But she said nothing.
She simply nodded and returned to the resort.
Lance watched Madeline walk away and instructed Valerie, "You should follow her. Make sure she won’t try to talk with that bastard Eastwood."
"You’re not making it any better, Lance," Valerie sighed as she ran towards Madeline.
Lance waited until Madeline was out of his sight. He then turned around and stared at the beautiful, vast ocean.
"I need to control her life. She is my girlfriend, my property," Lance assured himself.
But deep down, he also questioned himself after seeing how Madeline had so much resentment against him.
"Don’t give me that look, Maddy. It hurts me..."
