Chapter 69: Chapter 69

"Let me make your life harder, Bertha," Madeline said. ’Just like how you make my life harder by acting like a snake and spreading fake rumors about me since I was a child.’

Madeline had a lot of grudges against Bertha, and that grudge was definitely reciprocated because Bertha had obviously hated her since they were young, for whatever reason.

They were childhood friends at the same kindergarten, primary school, and junior high.

They were also in the same choir club in junior high, though Madeline was obviously the star of the choir because of her angelic voice.

Unfortunately, despite them having to know each other for so long, Bertha hated her guts and talked shit about Madeline behind her back.

’Well, it’s better not to think about this,’ Madeline told herself as she shook her head. Recalling bitter memories of the past would only slow her progress, so she tried to focus on the game instead.

Madeline knew how to make the game miles harder for Bertha.

She read the name tag placed near the cage: "Tioman Kukri Snake, huh?"

Madeline checked all the red snakes she could find in the cage and then ensured she found the same species: a kukri snake.

After a while, she finally found the snake she wanted to use, another red Kukri snake with an eerily similar appearance to the Tioman Kukri snake, but there were no thin black stripes on its body.

It was a Red Coral Kukri snake.

The snake charmer approached Madeline and asked, "What do you want to do with this one, Miss?"

Madeline smiled kindly at the snake charmer, "Nothing much. I just want to spice up the game." She pointed at the Red Coral Kukri snake and said, "Can you switch the snakes’ cage?"

The snake charmer had been warned there might be some manipulation as part of the game, so he obliged.

He picked the Red Coral Kukri snake and switched the cage with the correct answer to this riddle, Tioman Kukri snake.

Madeline giggled when she saw the correct snake in a different cage. She only made a quick switch, and Bertha would probably pull her hair out of frustration.

"Ahh, too bad I can’t stay here to watch her panicking and stressing out," Madeline sighed. She thanked the snake charmer and left the snake den area with the new clue.

She merged the third clue with the ones she had, creating an almost complete map with one word to add.

Monkey.

So once she combined the clues, it became:

Monkey no evil.

She flipped the clue and saw the last remaining clue to complete her map.

It was a picture of two baby monkeys hugging each other with a wooden toy car in front of them.

At the bottom, there was also another instruction.

’Go to the monkey heaven next, follow the signpost.’

"Alright, last one."

Madeline followed the signpost and reached the monkey heaven, where a bunch of baby monkeys were hanging around.

Some simply sat on a tree branch with fellow babies. The others were hugging their mothers. It was cute.

Madeline looked around to find any clue as to what she should do here. She saw a female Indonesian forest ranger feeding a baby monkey.

She approached her and asked, "Hello, can I ask you something?"

...

As expected, there was no answer from her, just like with the snake charmers.

This staff would probably talk to her once she found out the key to the riddle.

Madeline checked the clue again, "Two baby monkeys hugging... and a small wooden toy car."

Madeline looked around and found two baby monkeys fighting over a toy car on a stone bench.

They kept snatching the toy car from each other and had the last clue paper next to them.

"Really? There’s no way it’s that easy, right?" Madeline tried to grab the clue from the bench, but the moment she touched it, the baby monkey screamed and tried to bite her hand.

"Wha!" Madeline quickly pulled her hand away before she got bitten.

The baby monkeys fiercely defended the clue paper as if it were something precious.

After making sure that Madeline wouldn’t try to steal their belongings, they got busy snatching the wooden car from each other’s hands again.

"They are monkey brothers who like to trade, Miss," the forest ranger said after Madeline found the subject of the last riddle.

"Trade?"

"Yes, they will give you that clue in exchange for something they want."

"What do they want, and how can I find it?"

The forest ranger said nothing after that. She ignored Madeline and busied herself, carrying a few baby monkeys on her shoulders and arms.

Madeline clicked her tongue. She had to change her question so this woman would answer.

"Then, can you tell me if the other girls are already here before me?" Madeline asked.

"Yes," the forest ranger nodded. "The first one to arrive is a short woman wearing a tank top and jeans, and the second one wears camo pants and an oversized shirt."

’So this is Bertha’s starting point and the second one for Jasmin,’ Madeline thought.

She began to analyze what was happening right now.

Bertha was the type of person who would manipulate the game in her favor, while Jasmin wouldn’t do such a thing.

’Bertha must’ve done something to the toy car because it’s a trade item to get the clue,’ Madeline wondered.

Madeline observed the toy car and realized it was stained with wet mud, so it must’ve been thrown into one before.

She then checked her paper clue again and realized the color of the toy car’s wheels was blue, and the one in the monkey’s hand was yellow.

’Does that mean there’s more than one toy car?’ Madeline concluded.

Since that toy car was stained with mud, the last one who retrieved it must’ve taken it from a muddy area.

Thus, Madeline looked around and noticed a shallow pond.

She also saw shoe prints leading to the shallow pond.

’Bertha and I are wearing sandals. So that must be Jasmin’s shoes.’
