Chapter 50: Chapter 50
"Did you enjoy it, though?" Zane asked. He glanced at all the production staff, whose eyes were always on them. He scoffed, "I guess not. We’re getting recorded all the time, anyway."
"I’m enjoying it," Madeline said. She leaned on his arm. Her eyes still stared at the hill, counting the monkeys that she saw.
She sat on this spot because, from this angle, none of the cameramen could record her face. She needed to relax a bit after having to play this bitchy character for a while.
"Really?" Zane asked. Her answer surprised him because he thought she would continue to play the character she invented to stay relevant.
But she sounded genuine, and her voice was sweet and soft.
But it was only a split second before she raised her voice again to make herself sound mean: "Yeah, because all of these monkeys look like you. So ugly, ewww."
Zane laughed at her awkward way to turn the tide. She probably had a moment of weakness because she was trying to relax.
"Have you fallen in love with any of them yet?"
"S—Shut up," Madeline said, hitting his chest playfully, which felt like a tickle for Zane.
Madeline was annoyed with this man.
She had been trying her best to act like the worst bitch to go on a date with, but Zane kept on catering to her, making all of her rants into a funny joke; sometimes, he would flirt with her and make her lose focus.
Zane might be a great teammate to win a game, but he was terrible to date, especially when she had a mission.
"Madeline Rose, you got a call from Miss Valerie, the Producer," the staff member said as he handed a phone to Madeline.
"Valerie?" Madeline frowned. She glanced at Zane, who shrugged, as he also had no idea.
—
Madeline put the phone near her ear. "Hello?"
"What the fuck are you doing there, Maddy?"
Madeline’s heart jumped when she heard the familiar voice of the man who had contracted her as his girlfriend.
She checked the caller ID and realized it was a three-way call with Lance and Valerie.
Madeline didn’t want to deal with Lance. She was still bitter and angry after what happened yesterday. She legit thought this man wouldn’t try to contact her anymore.
"Maddy, I’m asking you," Lance said impatiently. "What the fuck are you doing there?!"
"Calm down, Lance," Valerie said on the phone, trying to defuse the situation. "I’m sorry, Madeline. Your real boyfriend is drunk and very jealous right now. I don’t know how to calm him down, so you should do it."
"And don’t worry about the camera. I’ve told them to stop recording for a moment while you’re still on the phone," Valerie added, just to make sure that Madeline could go all out on her boyfriend.
Madeline took a deep breath and replied, "I’m having a date with Zane Eastwood. Does that answer your question, Mr. Grant?"
"Break up with him, NOW!" Lance yelled on the phone.
"I’m not dating him!" Madeline yelled back. She didn’t expect Lance to be so aggressive in drunken jealousy. But she wasn’t scared because he had broken her trust, and now it was time for her to take control of the situation. "This is all a reality show, and YOU are the one who set me up!"
"Don’t lie to me, Maddy. You said you had an A-list celebrity as a boyfriend before, and I told you to break up with him. This is him, right? Zane Eastwood is that man, right!?"
Madeline didn’t know how Lance could come up with that conclusion. Perhaps he was too drunk to realize that he was acting like a teenage boy throwing tantrums right now.
Madeline glanced at Zane, who still had a smile. as if he had expected this to happen. Madeline didn’t want to confirm or deny that Zane was her boyfriend. After all, Zane’s presence was very convenient for her to set up some rumors.
"You should stop drinking and go to sleep, Mr. Grant. You’re spewing bullshit right now."
"I saw you kissing him! You are MY girlfriend, MINE! How would you think I’d react?!" Lance said. "And don’t call me Mr. Grant! We already agreed that you’d call me Lance or Babe!"
Madeline was so close to exploding that she told Lance that they were nothing but contracted lovers. Her responsibility lay in coming to his family gathering and acting like a lover.
But it was a three-way call with Valerie, so she couldn’t say it because nobody other than Lance and her was supposed to know about it.
"Really? I am yours after you lied to me about the no water rule in the reality show. You also put a recording device in my bungalow. You are putting me under constant stress!" Madeline said. "So, for now, I don’t feel like being your girlfriend until this reality show ends!"
"WHAT?!" Lance felt that his heart was burning, but he wasn’t sure it was caused by alcohol or her answer. "You can’t do this to me, Madeline!"
"Well, I can, and I will. Because you’ve put me in a shitty situation, Mr. Grant," Madeline doubled down, making sure she got her revenge on Lance.
"You know I can just pull the production entirely, right? I own this entire thing!"
"Hey, that’s too far!" Valerie protested.
"You can do that, but I will never talk to you anymore."
"O—okay, calm down. You’re going too far, Babe..." Lance quickly fixed his tone as he realized that Madeline was serious.
Valerie was astonished when she heard this.
Did Lancelot Grant actually fold over a woman’s threat?!
"Calm down? I am Calm," Madeline replied. "Keep this going, and you will see what I can do to boost your reality show. I will bring you a fortune!"
"I don’t need money, you know that—"
"And if you want to mend your mistake, you can do it once I’m back in the United States. See you in a month, Mr. Grant.’
