Chapter 32: Chapter 32

Madeline woke up early in the morning when she got a text from Ada saying that her flight would board at nine in the morning.

She had already prepared everything the night before. Since the weather in Bali was mostly hot and humid, she prepared a big bottle of sunscreen and many summer dresses and bikinis.

Sadly, she only had one triangle bikini that left almost nothing to the imagination. Most of her bikinis were still mildly covered. She was embarrassed to wear something too revealing because she rarely went to the beach.

After all, she was in hiding for four years and spent her younger days working in the entertainment industry. Wearing a bikini to the beach was almost like something out of a dream for her.

She pulled her big luggage out of her room with difficulty, and as she opened the door, she saw Nathan, who was already standing there.

"Nathan? Isn’t it too early for you to wake up?" Madeline asked as she checked her watch. "It’s only six."

"I woke up early today to see you out," Nathan said. He snatched the big luggage and carried it down the stairs without any problem.

Madeline followed him from behind, confused about why her brother would kindly wake up early to help her.

"Is everything alright? Five thousand should be fine for a month, right?" Madeline asked.

"Yeah, it’s more than enough," Nathan said. "I made you some pancakes for breakfast. Go eat them before your pickup arrives."

"Well... thank you." Madeline happily sat at the dining table and began eating her breakfast made by her brother. She wondered if money was the key to her brother’s tolerance and kindness, making her wonder if she should give him more later.

’Wait, that’s not good. That would only spoil him,’ Madeline thought. ’I’m basically his parent while Mom is away. I have to be careful.’

"Are you sure you will be okay without me around?"

"I will be okay. It’s just a month, right?" Nathan asked.

"Yeah..."

There was another awkward silence between them before he asked, "What kind of reality show is it?"

"I don’t have any idea other than there’ll be seven more contestants, but I know it’ll be called Summer Heat Lovers."

"Um..." Nathan lowered his head. He had a lot to say, but he could only mutter, "Be careful there, and don’t worry about me or the house."

Madeline smiled. She ruffled her brother’s head and said, "I know you’re much more independent than I am. I’m not worried about the house. I’m just worried you might feel unsafe alone in the house."

"It’s not my first time staying alone in the house for a long time," Nathan said, subtly reminding Madeline how often Nathan had to stay in the house as a kid because their parents were so busy accompanying her to the shooting location. "But it’s not your fault. Don’t worry about it," he assured before Madeline apologized again.

Madeline nodded. She ate the pancakes and saw Ada parking the car in front of her house.

"My pickup is here. Let’s go."

Madeline walked out of her house with Nathan trailing behind, pushing the luggage out.

"Good morning, Miss. The flight will take off in two hours. We have to hurry," Ada said before she carried the heavy luggage into the car trunk.

Madeline and Nathan stared at each other for a while. "Nathaniel Rose, I know that we had a lot of fights, and I know you don’t like what I’m doing right now."

"That’s—"

"I also know that your friends are mocking me. It’s not a secret," Madeline said. "But I promise you that I will restart my career. There will be a time when you will finally be proud of me again."

Madeline gave Nathan a pat on the head before entering the car and waving goodbye to her brother.

Nathan stared at the car that drove further and further from his sight.

He put his hands in his hoodie and mumbled, "I’ve always admired you, Sis. Good luck with your reality show."

"Are you ready for a long vacation, Miss?" Ada asked energetically.

"Not at all," Madeline laughed dryly. "I can’t sleep. I don’t know what kind of place I will visit or what kind of people I will meet."

"You will be fine, Miss. You have preferential treatment," Ada said. "Mr. Grant sponsors this reality show, so he will be pretty biased towards you."

Madeline wanted to believe that.

But the Producer, Valerie Phoenix Gray, didn’t seem to be a kind lady who would be kind enough to give her preferential treatment.

In fact, Valerie might intentionally put her in a difficult situation just for the sake of views. After all, it’s a reality show, and having a controversial punching bag would boost viewer retention.

Thus, Madeline didn’t respond to Ada’s encouragement. She busied herself with her phone and texted Lance.

I’m going to fly to Bali soon.

And in less than a minute, Lance texted back.

Don’t worry about anything. I have everything prepared for you, including your screen time in that reality show.

Whether you win or not, you will be the most popular after the show ends. I guarantee it.

Madeline’s lips curled.

It was relieving that Lance assured her. It also felt so much better because, at least, she wouldn’t be an instant punching bag.

’Everything will be just fine, right? Surely, Lance wouldn’t put me in a difficult situation. I’m his contractual girlfriend, after all,’ Madeline thought.

Unfortunately for her, Lance was currently on a video call with his cousin, Valerie.

"I told Madeline I’d prepared everything for her," Lance said.

"You’re such an asshole, Lance. She will be shocked to see what kind of disaster you put her in."

"Come on, now. It’s not that bad, right?" Lance chuckled. "By the way, what’s the important news you want to tell me?"

"One of the male contestants got sick and couldn’t come. So we got a replacement."

"And who is this replacement?"

"Zane Eastwood."

Lance paused for a moment and asked to confirm that he didn’t mishear. "That Zane?"

"The young, award-winning megastar who played in many action movies. So yes, THAT Zane Eastwood," Valerie said.

"That’s strange. He’s an A-list actor, crazy popular. Why would he join this unknown show?" Lance asked. "Does he want a payment?"

Lance began counting how much he needed to pay for Zane’s appearance in his reality show.

He might need to pay at least three million dollars per episode.

However, he was more than happy to pay Zane Eastwood, which would instantly boost this reality show into a huge success.

"No, he doesn’t want any payment," Valerie replied. "He said his girlfriend is joining the show, so he has to support her."

"Girlfriend?" Lance’s focus was instantly directed at Madeline. He wondered if Madeline was the said girlfriend.

But then again, he already inspected Madeline’s dating history, and there was no mention of Zane Eastwood.

"Do you know his girlfriend’s identity?" Lance asked.

"No, I never see him with a woman as well. He never has any rumors with any girl," Valerie commented. "I thought he was gay since he said he has no interest in dating and never seem to get close to his female co-stars outside of the set."

"Well, this just debunked it," Lance shrugged. "Still, let him into the reality show. Tell me if he asked for money."

"Sure, you’re the boss."
