Chapter 31: Chapter 31
Madeline returned home after a visit to the hospital. She saw her brother playing video games in the living room, and the breakfast she prepared was left untouched.
"Why don’t you eat breakfast?" Madeline asked. "That pancake is cold now."
As usual, Nathan ignored her, and she wasn’t surprised. The disrespect had become so common between them, so she wasn’t bothered by it.
Madeline sighed. She sat on the sofa right next to him, and Nathan quickly scooted away from her as if she were a deadly virus he had to avoid.
Madeline knew there was no point in trying to make him understand her situation. So she decided to break the news immediately, "I’m going to fly tomorrow and stay in Bali for a month."
Nathan finally paused his game. He turned his head towards Madeline and stared at her in silence.
It took them a moment of awkward silence until he asked, "Why?"
"I’ll join a reality show—some sort of competition, I guess," Madeline said. "I told Mom you’re staying with Aunt River, but I’m sure you don’t want to be there, right?"
"... I can live alone," Nathan said.
"That’s not safe. Do you have a friend you can stay with?" Madeline asked. She didn’t know about her brother’s circle of friends. She knew that Nathan was popular in his school, but he never invited any of his friends to the house.
Though she guessed it was probably because of her. She was very controversial, after all.
"No," Nathan replied. "Just give me enough cash to get by for a month. I can handle myself."
"I can’t trust you. I’m scared something might happen to you once I’m away."
"You’re not even in my life most of the time. What are you on about?" Nathan clicked his tongue. "Mom and Dad were busy with you as well. I’m used to living all by myself. I can handle it."
...
Madeline also felt guilty for her brother because she knew Nathan had had a hard life since he was young.
Their parents were focusing on her career, so he got sidelined. Obviously, he would resent her in the end, but Madeline still wanted to act like a good older sister to him.
"Are you sure you don’t have anyone you can live with?"
"No."
"Then, promise me not to waste the money on unnecessary things, and don’t bring a girl inside the house. You know you’re too young for... that."
"I don’t have a girlfriend!" Nathan denied. "I can barely have any girl talking to me without mentioning you. How am I supposed to have a girlfriend?!"
...
"I’m sorry," Madeline sighed. "It’s my fault."
"Yeah, it’s your fault. So just give me the money, and I’ll live alone!"
Madeline had prepared the cash, actually. She was just unsure of how to handle the situation.
She took out an envelope and put it on the table. "There are five thousand dollars inside this envelope. You should be able to live comfortably for a month alone. I trust you that you can control your spending, Nathan."
Nathan was surprised.
He didn’t expect his sister to be serious about this. "Wait, you’re really going?"
"I told you. I am," Madeline confirmed. "Put the money somewhere safe and don’t tell your friends about it. You might get robbed, and I can’t be here to help you if something happens."
Madeline got up from the sofa and walked to her room when Nathan suddenly called her, "Maddy."
Madeline turned around. "Yes?"
Nathan sat there in silence, staring at her with a concerned look. His eyes told Madeline he had much to say, but Nathan wasn’t good at encouraging.
So he simply mumbled, "Don’t die."
Madeline giggled. She was relieved that there was at least a bit of sibling love in Nathan’s heart for her.
She really thought that she was doomed because she ruined their relationship, but it seemed they still had a chance to mend this sibling relationship.
’It will take time for us to rebuild our relationship as siblings, but I hope there will be a day when he will tell his friends how proud he is to have Madeline Rose as a sister.’
"I’m more worried about you, Nathan. Don’t get entangled with bad people while I’m away," Madeline said. "I know you’re popular, but keep yourself safe. Can’t have both siblings get into a scandal."
"Tsk, I told you I don’t have a girlfriend!" Nathan said as he threw a couch pillow to Madeline, who dodged it immediately and ran to her room.
Nathan’s lips thinned as he stared at the money on the table.
He didn’t expect his sister’s career to start getting better after she appeared in many talk shows, acting like a skank with no shame.
He was secretly happy that Madeline wouldn’t need to go to those talk shows anymore, and hopefully, this reality show would propel her career again.
After all, Nathan was the first to witness how amazing his sister was in singing, dancing, and acting. She was a complete package, and it was tragic that her career got cut short.
Nathan was stressed out because everyone in his school asked him constantly about his sister, asking how it felt to have such a shameless sister and asking if he felt ashamed as well.
Nathan got tired of defending her after a while, so he just ignored them all.
Some tried to bully him out of this, but he was popular enough to get a lot of people to support him. But it only made him feel even shittier. He felt vulnerable and powerless because he couldn’t protect his sister’s image.
’Maybe she really got a lot of money from real sponsorship,’ Nathan wondered, because initially he thought she got the money from selling her body. It hurt him so much to imagine his sister having to sell her body for them to get by. ’If she really got a sponsorship, I must apologize for being so harsh on her...’
