Chapter 30: Chapter 30

"A month? Where will you go?" Diana asked.

"To a resort somewhere. I don’t know," Madeline said. "My boss has been casted on a reality show and wants me to go with him. I will stay in the same resort for the shoot for a month, and he promised to give me a lot of bonuses once he’s done."

"But you’re not going to be an actress there, right?" Diana asked out of concern. She remembered how Madeline was so crushed when Jonathan Hale lied to her.

Her career was ruined, and she cried every day because of all the scathing comments from people in real life and on social media.

Even their relatives began to distance themselves because they really thought Madeline was a homewrecker.

Diana couldn’t bear to see her daughter get mocked and slandered online again. It was so painful that her health was deteriorating fast when the news broke out.

"No, I don’t want to be on TV anymore, Mom," Madeline replied. "Don’t worry about me. I’ll be just fine."

"But what about Nathan?"

"Nathan..."

Honestly, Madeline wasn’t sure about it either. She hadn’t broken the news to her little brother because of their deteriorating relationship.

He simply refused to talk to her, and Madeline preferred not to talk unless it was important because he would always yell or belittle her.

But, of course, she wouldn’t tell her mother about the souring relationship between the Roses siblings. Her mother was battling cancer, the last thing she needed to know was the series of arguments and fights between Madeline and Nathan.

"Don’t worry about Nathan, Mom. I told him already, and he said he would stay at Aunt River’s house for a month," Madeline said. "I’ll make sure they watch over him while I’m away."

"Your Aunt is willing to do that?" Diana remembered that River, her sister, was one of the relatives who distanced herself.

"We’re on a better term now," Madeline lied.

"Okay, that’s relieving," Diana sighed. "Your brother is in his rebellious stage. I’m just scared that he would be a handful for you."

"No, no, he’s been nice to me. He’s a good kid," Madeline assured. "I promise I’ll return with a lot of money for all of us. My boss is very kind and generous."

"I hope I can meet your boss someday," Diana said. "I want to thank him for making our lives easier..."

Madeline imagined Lance visiting the hospital to check on her mother. Though it was impossible, she would be more than happy if Lance helped convince her mother that she wasn’t doing an acting job anymore.

But that was impossible, and she didn’t want Lance to know about her mother’s condition because it would make her feel pathetic for using his money to pay for a medical bill.

’Just for this one, I hope he won’t check his credit account,’ Madeline thought.

"My boss is just very busy. He’s a rising actor. He barely has time to sleep, let alone come to visit," Madeline said. "But worry not, he is a good boss. He treats me well."

"I understand. Please take care of yourself while you’re away," Diana said.

"I will," Madeline kissed her Mom on the forehead and added, "I love you, Mom. Please get well soon."

Meanwhile, Lance was having breakfast in his penthouse when he got a notification on his phone. He would get the notification once every five hundred thousand dollars.

Usually, he’d just ignore it because that was a meager amount for him to care for. But not today.

He wondered what kind of purchases Madeline made with his card.

Thus, he picked up his phone and checked the list of her purchases.

"Six hundred thousand dollars. Hm... a lot less than I expected," Lance muttered as he scrolled through the list of transactions. It was mostly for luxury branded stuff, which Lance severely disliked.

He had almost everything in his wardrobe tailor-made, especially his suits.

He disliked having to follow a brand’s rules and how they still tried to subtly put their brand and logo. He disliked walking advertisements.

But he was fine if Madeline wore those walking ads of dresses or bags. She was a celebrity. She was meant to be an icon of some sort.

After all, Lance had no intention of marrying her. It was fine to parade her around like a clown.

He chuckled as he kept scrolling, but his mocking smile faltered once he reached the end.

"Three hundred thousand dollars for medical bills? What is this for?" Lance wondered. He didn’t dig deep into Madeline’s family other than the fact that she was raised in a normal middle-income household. He thought it was unnecessary to know more about it because her family was not a threat to him anyway.

But this three hundred thousand dollar medical bill was quite a shocker for him.

"Is this for extensive plastic surgery?" Lance wondered. "But she’s already gorgeous without any work done. What’s there to fix?"

Lance scratched his head, as he was still confused. The money wasn’t important to him, but the fact that Madeline spent that much on medical bills meant there must be something.

’Is she sick?’ Lance pondered. ’But what kind of sickness would force you to pay three hundred thousand? I’m sure she doesn’t have something dangerous like cancer, right?’

Lance’s mood soured when he thought about cancer because that thing ruined his family once it infected someone dearest to his heart.

’No, I shouldn’t think about the worst. It’s better to just ask her later.’

The more Lance thought about it, the more confused he got. So he decided to put this problem aside and forget it for now.

"Speaking of Madeline..." Lance checked the date and realized that Madeline would leave for Bali, where the reality show would take place, and stayed there for a month.

Thus, he texted Valerie to ask whether she had already gathered all the contestants.

Valerie replied with a rather ambiguous text.

’You will be surprised by the roster of celebrities I gathered. This investment of yours will be a huge success, I guarantee it.’
