Chapter 28: Chapter 28
Ada checked on her boss from the rearview mirror and saw her contemplating something, then shaking her head vehemently before contemplating something again.
Ada got curious and asked, "What do you have in mind, Miss? You seem... distressed—wait, distress is not the right word. Uh... shy? You look shy."
"Shy?! O—Of course not! I’m not shy at all!" Madeline quickly denied it, but that denial made her look even more comically in love.
Ada chuckled. She had a faint guess of what probably had happened between Madeline and Lance in the CEO’s office.
Madeline shopped through Rodeo Drive, and it was another day for her to get photographed.
The visitors around Rodeo Drive expected Madeline to start posting again.
But not today.
She simply bought all the outfits she wanted and ignored everyone. She even ignored a hater who yelled at the top of her lungs, calling Madeline a slut.
Her mind was occupied with Lance Grant and that stupid kiss they had shared. If only she could turn back time, she would have avoided the kiss because now, whenever she bit her lower lips, she could feel the sweetness when she kissed that man.
’Ah, this is bad. This is really bad,’ Madeline fretted as she absentmindedly stared at the luxury bag presented in front of her. ’I think this is the side effect of not having any kind of contact with men other than my brother for four years straight. One kiss is enough to give me weird ideas.’
"Miss Rose, are you interested in this bag? Or do you want me to find another one that might suit you?" the clerk asked.
Madeline kept staring at the bag for ten more seconds until she replied, "Give me a dark green bag. I don’t care which type."
"Dark green?" The clerk was puzzled. "That color is not common for a bag, Miss. But we have one old stock of a bag with a dark green color."
"Yeah, I want that one then," Madeline said. "I’m just in the mood for dark green..."
**
Madeline returned home with at least thirty more luxury bags. Her room was now filled with a stack of luxury brand shopping bags, which made her wonder if she should sell some.
After all, some people would love to carry these shopping bags, even if they were empty.
Madeline sat on her bed after Ada left, staring at all the shopping bags on the ground, just like she did yesterday.
But today, her eyes quickly scavenged through the brands and stopped at one brand.
She took the item out of the shopping bags and put it on her lap, marveling at the color.
It was a Versace Greca Goddess leather bag in dark green. The chain and the shape weren’t her favorites. It was okay at best, but the color.
She didn’t know, but the color made it so much better!
"Why am I in the mood for a dark green color today?" Madeline wondered. The more she checked this color, the better it got.
She reached for the rose-pink bag she had at the corner of her bed.
Rose pink had been her favorite color for a long time, but now that she had put dark green and rose pink side by side, she somehow felt they looked very compatible!
’What is this color theory? Why am I so into colors today?’
Madeline was confused. She was acting like an idiot after getting a simple kiss. It was ridiculous because that wasn’t even her first kiss!
"He shouldn’t have gone for the second kiss! Now it makes me feel so weird!" Madeline complained.
As she complained about Lance, she suddenly got a call from him.
She picked it up after she took a few deep breaths. She had to control whatever crazy mood she had in mind right now and stay professional.
—
"Hi, um... is there something wrong, Lance?" Madeline asked awkwardly.
"Nothing wrong, love," Lance joked with a light chuckle. "I just want to commend your acting in front of my cousin. She’s convinced we are dating."
"Oh... yeah..." Madeline felt that she had been shot down. Her heartbeat gradually slowed down as she realized that she was nothing but a pretend girlfriend. "It’s my job. Don’t worry, I will make it believable."
"And remember not to take off your makeup. Don’t worry about the bedroom and bathroom. There won’t be any camera recording at night during the show," Lance said. "We can’t let them ruin the image of Madeline Rose."
"I understand," Madeline said. She should thank her mother’s genetics because she had good skin that almost never got any breakouts after she hit twenty, despite her constant use of thick makeup. It was a God-sent.
"You’re a good employee for me, Madeline. I believe we can be a good long-term contractual partner if we keep this ruse," Lance said.
"Mhm, I hope so, Sir," Madeline replied perfunctorily. "Sorry, Sir. But I’m in the middle of something here. Can we continue the conversation later?"
"Sure. Oh, I have one more thing to say." Lance paused for a second and said, "I like our kiss. Yours are the sweetest I’ve ever tasted, Maddy."
Madeline’s eyes widened. "W—Wait, Lance—!"
Beep.
—
Madeline was left stunned when Lance dropped the bomb that exploded, leaving her mind and heart scattered, and then abruptly ended the call.
It was crazy how easy it was for Lance to say those words like they were meaningless, but for Madeline, his words were so powerful that her body was experiencing a constant electrifying sensation.
She rolled around the bed like a madwoman, kicking the air while burying her head under the pillow like an ostrich. "That man is mad! He is totally mad! How could he just leave like that? Ugh!"
She didn’t know what kind of fever she caught right now, but her entire body was heating up at the thought of kissing Lance again.
"This is bad. This is really bad!" Madeline yelled as she was confused about how to process this feeling.
