Chapter 26: Chapter 26

"Do you think this is suitable to wear in the office?" Madeline asked. She already knew the answer but was playing a persona right now, so she had to pump her confidence first.

"Not at all, Miss," Ada replied. "But I guess, since you’re basically a celebrity right now and you are his lover in the office, I don’t think they would care about what kind of outfit you wear."

"Mhm, you’re right," Madeline grinned. "The key is not giving a fuck."

**

Madeline entered the lobby of the Empress Entertainment building, and everyone in the lobby was blown-away when they saw the beautiful and controversial woman gracing their morning with her presence. She even wore a lace corset and low-rise jeans to the office, which was highly unsuitable for a formal-only area.

She ignored all the eyes lingering on her and talked to the receptionist who mocked her yesterday. "I’m here to meet with Mr. Grant. Give me a VIP pass to get to his office now."

Mr. Grant himself had warned the receptionist about Madeline’s important status. So, even though the receptionist was very resentful of this shameless bitch, she could only hand the VIP access card to her.

Madeline grabbed it and winked. "Thanks, darling. Try not to run your mouth again in the future, or I might get you fired for disrespecting me."

The receptionist gritted her teeth as she glared at Madeline, who ignored her completely.

It was a usual day for her to get hated anyway, so no matter how hostile the situation was, Madeline simply faced everything without any hint of fear in her eyes.

She reached the top floor and saw an old lady in her late fifties sitting on the secretary’s seat.

Madeline curled her lips as she almost burst out laughing.

Lance told her yesterday that he had many meaningless troubles because of the secretaries he hired, to the point that he had to install CCTV cameras in his own office.

So, this was probably the best solution he could get. Hire an old lady who was experienced and competent, probably married, and had no strange idea about him... hopefully.

The old lady took her eyes off the computer for a moment and stood up immediately. Greeting her with a smile. "Miss Madeline Rose, Mr. Grant has been waiting for you inside; please come in."

"Thanks, uh...

"Deborah."

"Yes, thanks, Deborah." Madeline smiled genuinely at the old secretary and knocked on the CEO’s door before opening it.

Lance was wearing a dark green suit that matched his eye color.

He was sitting next to the producer, a young woman, probably in her late twenties. She had long hair that she tied in a ponytail. She wore glasses, but the glasses didn’t make her look like a nerd. It made her look professional instead, especially with the sharp gaze behind the glasses.

"You’re finally here," Lance said with a smile. He put his hand on the lady’s shoulder and tapped it several times. "This is my cousin, Valerie Phoenix Gray. She’s a renowned Indie movie Producer and Director. She’s branching out to try directing and producing a reality show. She’s a talented—"

"Stop with your useless rambling, Lance," Valerie interrupted, her eyes still on Madeline. She observed her from head to toe and commented, "You look even more gorgeous in real life."

"T—Thank you." Madeline couldn’t help but feel nervous. This woman reminded her of her childhood when she entered a singing competition, and the judge was extremely strict and intimidating.

Lance smiled meaningfully and said, "Don’t give her that look, Val. You’re making my girlfriend nervous."

Val gave Lance a side-eye and commented, "I praised her just now. Don’t try to play hero. You know damn well how picky I am about the people who can enter this reality show."

Lance shrugged hopelessly. "I don’t care about the rest of the seven people you will pick, but make sure to give Madeline a lot of screen time."

"That depends on her performance during the duration of the show," Val said. She looked back at Madeline and assured, "Though, I don’t think you need to worry about her screen time. She’s obviously a darling in the camera."

"That’s good. I need her to be even more popular," Lance said.

Valerie glanced at her cousin, suspicious of his true intention, as he used ’need’ rather than ’want.’

It sounded insincere for a man who claimed that he was infatuated by this controversial lady in front of them.

But she didn’t comment on that because it wasn’t her problem, nor did she want to give herself a headache arguing with the most reckless of the Grant siblings.

"You told me there is something she can’t do during the show, and what is that?" Valerie asked.

"Oh, I don’t want any event during the reality show that forces my girlfriend to swim. I don’t want people to see her bare face," Lance said.

Madeline was surprised that Lance would make such a request. But she was also grateful for his understanding and concern because she also didn’t want to expose herself.

She felt vulnerable and uncomfortable when she wasn’t wearing her thick dolly makeup. She couldn’t play the shameless Madeline Rose without it.

"That’s a strange request, but if you insist, I can exclude her or simply replace all the swimming activity with something else," Valerie agreed. "You’re the one investing in this reality show, after all."

"T—Thanks, Miss Phoenix Gray—"

"Valerie," Valerie interrupted. "Just call me Val or Valerie. It’d be awkward if we address each other by formal names when you join our family gathering later."

"O—Okay, thank you, Val."

Valerie observed Madeline again and said, "I feel like you’re going to survive long into the show, so I expect so much from you, Madeline."

"Don’t pressure her..." Lance said.

"Don’t spoil her. An obvious preferential treatment will ruin the show’s rating," Valerie said coldly to her cousin.

Lance sighed. "You really have no conscience, Val."

Lance turned his attention to Madeline and smiled at her.

"I told you to come to inform you about this reality show and to introduce you to my cousin," he said. "You will leave in a week and stay inside the resort for a month without a phone, so you should prepare yourself, Maddy."
