Chapter 246: Chapter 246: Let the world know about us
[Song Recommendation: IV of Spades - Come Inside of My Heart.]
"Come to the stage, Madeline, Lance. I don’t want to stand here forever!" Jasmin urged with a big smile on her face. Of course, she already knew what would happen next. She just couldn’t wait to witness it as soon as possible.
"Go and accept that award, bro. I’m sure you also want to say something," George said.
"Miss, you deserve this! Go and accept the Oscar!" Olga added.
Lance and Madeline looked at each other and decided to walk to the stage together.
Madeline hugged her boyfriend’s arm as she wanted the whole world to know they had a deep relationship.
Meanwhile, Lance had an unknown expression, but once someone paid enough attention, it started to get obvious that Lance was so goddamn nervous!
"Okay, here’s your Oscar," Jasmin said. She glanced at Lance and handed it to him instead. "You should make a speech, girl. This movie is about you, after all."
"Thank you, Jasmin."
"You sure have to thank me now. Because you’ll have the best surprise of your life," Jasmin winked before she walked off the stage.
Madeline leaned towards the mic. She stared at the audience in front of her. She smiled before starting her speech, "This feels like a deja vu. Five years ago, I stood on this stage, receiving the award for the best actress of the year for my role in ’The Last Spring’."
"I remember the cheer and how everyone wished the best for me. I knew I had a long career ahead of me. Maybe I could be a great actress with millions of fans adoring me," Madeline said. "But fate played a cruel game on me. I was accused of being a mistress, even though I knew nothing about Jon’s private life."
"I was depressed and thought about quitting acting forever due to the hate comments. But, you know, money’s tight, and I am the breadwinner of my family. So I took the route of becoming the most hated skank on earth to stay relevant."
"I thought my life would stay that way, but then I found the man of my dreams," Madeline said while shifting her gaze to Lance. She smiled warmly at her boyfriend as she boldly stated, "He’s the one who saved me, and I want to spend the rest of my life with him."
"Everyone, this might be the last time you’ll ever see me at this event because I will be stepping away from showbiz. I feel I’ve achieved what I wanted with the man I love."
Madeline’s speech was short, but it was sweet. The audience knew that Madeline wasn’t the bitch that she portrayed in the movie, but this only made her even more adorable.
"Your turn, Lance," Madeline said as she stepped aside to give Lance a space.
Lance held the suspiciously heavy Oscar trophy in his hand. He paid a little attention to the guests in front of him before he was fully focused on Madeline.
"Well, I made this movie because I wanted everyone to see that Madeline is a good woman," Lance smiled at Madeline. "I’m glad the movie became a box office success, so more and more people will know the truth about her."
"I think it’s no longer a secret that I come from a long lineage of powerful people. So, you know that I have expensive taste when it comes to my woman," Lance said boldly. "I want her to be perfect. She must be beautiful, kind, smart, and capable of stealing my family’s hearts."
"And this woman, MY woman, Madeline Eden Rose, has everything I want. She’s perfect, and I am hopelessly in love with her," Lance’s smile suddenly dissipated as he returned his gaze to the audience, "So, if any of you dare to bully her, then you might have to talk to your manager. Who knows, you might even find yourself blacklisted."
Some audience members tried to laugh it off, but it became awkward, and everyone fell silent after that.
"I’m madly in love with her, but you know I am not the only one who adores her," Lance paused for a moment before continuing, "That’s why I want to tie the knot with her."
The audience gasped, and so did Madeline, who was shocked by his statement.
Lance turned sideways to face Madeline, who was stunned. He smiled as he twisted the Oscar trophy and took out a white ring box.
Lance knelt in front of her, opening the ring box to reveal a pair of custom-made diamond rings. Madeline’s ring was specially crafted to resemble a rose, with each petal decorated with diamonds.
It was a one-of-a-kind, expensive, yet profoundly meaningful ring from the man who loved her deeply.
"I’m sorry it took me a while to do this," Lance began. "But I wanted to do this at the biggest event of the year, so nobody in this world will ever make a bad rumor about us," he paused, gazing into Madeline’s eyes. "You are the light of my life, Madeline Rose. I know that you think you’re the lucky one. But really, I am the one who lucked out to have you."
"I want to start a family with you. I want to spend the rest of my life with you. I want everything about you. So please..." Lance’s voice began to shake slightly with nervousness, fearing Madeline would suddenly change her mind.
"Lance..."
Lance took a deep breath and popped the question, "Madeline Rose, will you marry me?"
Madeline was in a trance, staring at Lance, who knelt before her with a ring box open.
She had somewhat predicted the proposal, but she hadn’t expected him to do it in front of millions of people watching the Academy Awards live.
To have everyone witness their wedding proposal meant they knew how much Lance loved her. So it was the best gesture that he could ever do.
She wiped the tears from the corners of her eyes and joked, "I want the wedding to be private, though. Got it?"
"I—Is that a yes?" Lance asked hesitantly.
"Yes!" Madeline nodded. "Make me your wife, Lancelot Grant!"
