Chapter 24: Chapter 24
As Lance hung up the call, Madeline felt that she had been lifted to heaven by his words.
Not only was he not angry at her spending, he even told her to go further!
Madeline was confused about how she could spend more than five million dollars a day. That number was just egregious!
Apartments? House? Villa? Luxury cars?
Of course, she wanted them all, but she knew two things that stayed at the top of her priority list:
Her father’s debt and her mother’s medication.
She wasn’t sure if she could pay her father’s debt with this black card because he was raking in millions of dollars in debt, all for gambling, and it would be extremely unethical to do so and would probably alert Lance in a bad way.
But for her mother’s medication?
Madeline grinned as she finally had one burden off her shoulder. She knew this privilege given by Lance wouldn’t last forever because they were bound by contract, and he would eventually find the right woman to marry after he was done utilizing her infamy for whatever he had in mind.
So, Madeline had to take advantage of her unique situation.
"Alright, I will go to the hospital tomorrow morning and pay all the bills!" Madeline said.
As she was in a good mood, she decided to check everything she bought from her shopping spree on Rodeo Drive today.
**
Madeline cooked for dinner, wanting to celebrate a good day with her little brother, who was having basketball practice right now.
He returned around seven when the dinner had been served on the table.
Madeline smiled at her brother and said, "Welcome home, Nathan. I’m celebrating a good day, so I cooked lasagna for us today. Come, have a seat, and let’s eat dinner before you shower."
Nathan was wearing his basketball uniform as he walked into the house. His smile disappeared instantly the moment he saw his sister.
He was already pissed at the news he got today, and now he got even more pissed when Madeline could act so freely, even though she was the center of gossip everywhere.
Thus, Nathan simply walked past her, ignoring his sister completely.
"Nathan," Madeline called her brother. She turned around as she followed him to the stairs. "Nathan, this is not how you should treat your sister!"
Nathan halted his step. He looked over his shoulder and asked, "Then what should I do, Maddy? Should I treat you with respect? But you don’t seem to respect yourself, either."
"I’ve been telling you over and over that I’m just going to the interview for us to get by!" Madeline tried to defend herself. "We need money, Nathan. Besides, you should’ve been used to my new job, right?"
"Including how you’ve sold yourself to a rich man?"
"... huh?" Madeline frowned. "What do you mean?"
"Stop pretending, Maddy. I’ve seen your viral picture on Rodeo Drive. You’re buying so much expensive stuff. Do you think we have the money for that?!"
Madeline’s lips thinned. Of course, she wouldn’t tell Nathan about Lance Grant and her contract with him.
She wanted Nathan to think less about her job and everything surrounding it, knowing it wouldn’t do him any good.
He was still fifteen years old. He simply needed to focus at school.
"You’re wrong, Nathan. I did not sleep with any rich man. I just got a contract from an entertainment company, so I got enough money to buy all those," Madeline explained. "We’re celebrating because I’m going to get a real job as an actress soon, and I can pay for all Mom’s medical bills and her future treatment as well!"
"And do you expect me to believe that?" Nathan sneered. "You’re hated everywhere, Maddy. I’m not a kid that you can fool! I know that you’ve been whoring yourself to get money!"
"NATHANIEL!" Madeline raised her voice at her little brother. "You can hate me for what I’m doing right now, but you can’t treat me like this! I am your sister!"
"I don’t have a whore sister like you!"
"Nathan, you!"
Madeline tried to grab Nathan’s arm to reprimand him. But Nathan was already taller and stronger than her. When he got grabbed, he simply pushed his sister until Madeline fell on her back.
"Ouch! Aw!"
Nathan had a trace of guilt seeing his sister in pain, yet at the same time, he was angry at his sister, whom he once admired, turning into someone unrecognizable.
He was also angry at her because her new ’job’ made it easy for everyone in his school to make fun of her and, to some extent, poke fun at him as well.
Madeline rubbed her back as she looked up to see Nathan rushing to his bedroom and slamming the door shut, leaving her gobsmacked and in pain.
"Nathan..." Madeline murmured. She lowered her head.
Just as expected, it would take a while for Nathan to accept her new status as the most hated woman in the country right now.
After all, Nathan grew up as her biggest admirer, and now everything came crashing down, and their relationship strained to the point they couldn’t even hold a normal conversation.
’I know I just have to be patient, but it still hurts...’
But the pain in her back couldn’t be compared to the pain in her heart.
She cared for her brother deeply, so when he called her a whore, it felt like he just stabbed an open wound.
’But what can I do anyway? Life is not all about sunshine and rainbows,’ Madeline thought as she got up.
She returned to the dining table and ate all the food she had prepared alone.
As she ate the food, a drop of tear fell onto her plate, and she quickly wiped it.
’I shouldn’t cry,’ Madeline told herself. ’This is the life that I choose. I can’t cry and regret everything right now.’
’Nathan will eventually understand that life will force you to do things that you don’t like. He’s just a teenager, after all.’
