Chapter 203: Chapter 203

"I don’t understand you, Mr. Grant. Isn’t it good that Lance and I are deeply in love with each other? We’re even planning to settle down sooner or later, waiting for the right moment," Madeline said. "Shouldn’t you be happy for us?"

"As I said, you are too deep inside his heart. I know my kind more than anyone, Madeline Rose," Henry replied with a sigh. "Lance is the most similar to me, which means once he falls in love with someone, he will be madly in love and hopelessly devoted to you."

"But you—I don’t know if you have the same amount of love he has. I don’t blame you for all the controversies surrounding you because I know how it feels to be ostracized, but I also don’t want him to be heartbroken after you leave him because I feel you’ll grow bored of him eventually."

"I love him and don’t plan to leave him," Madeline insisted.

Henry sighed. He grabbed a pen and traditional cheque paper on the table. He wrote his name and signature, then offered Madeline the pen, "Here, write down the amount you want. I don’t care about the amount. I just don’t want you to hurt my son."

Madeline didn’t budge at all.

She never intended to leave Lance anyway, so everything simply felt ridiculous to her. "Sir, if you’re so afraid of me leaving him, how about I promise you I’ll sign a prenup before Lance and I marry? I don’t have much in my bank account, but I will only leave with what I have in case Lance and I get a divorce. So you don’t need to worry about me becoming another ’Angel’ in your family."

"You will regret saying that. My family has so much money that you’re missing out in case you and Lance get a divorce."

"I.... I am kind of an idiot, I guess," Madeline laughed awkwardly. "I’m sure you’ve heard about my scandal. I fell in love with that man and willingly put up with everything before the scandal broke out."

"And so is with Lance. I fell in love with Lance, and I don’t care about anything else," Madeline said. "Even if Lance has nothing in him, as long as we can work together to earn money and make a living, then I’m going to stay."

"You’re unreasonable," Henry commented. "I commend your persistence so, I will give you a difficult choice."

"You told me that you will stay with my son no matter what, even if he has no money left," Henry took a deep breath as he stared at Madeline with a solemn gaze. "I will pull all of my trust fund for him, so he will truly have nothing but you."

Madeline’s eyes widened as her heart skipped a beat.

She shook her head, "You can’t do that, Sir."

"Why not? You said that you will stay with him no matter what, right? So let me pull everything and leave him with nothing. I want to see if you can stay."

"It’s not about me, it’s about him!" Madeline raised her voice, feeling agitated because Lance had been wronged. "I don’t care if I have to leave with nothing. I can survive a desperate situation, but not Lance!"

"If you don’t want him to be poor, you can leave him. I won’t let him get hurt by a woman who can’t keep her promise. So it’s better for you to leave now," Henry said. He offered the pen again, "So write your number, and leave Lance. This is the only way, Madeline Rose."

Madeline’s heart shattered as she stared at Henry and the pen in his hand.

She thought this was just another test, but the seriousness of this test was too much for her, and she began to doubt.

If Henry simply wanted to test her seriousness, surely he would’ve given up by now, right?

"I’m serious, Madeline Rose," Henry said as if he could read Madeline’s mind. "I can find my son a better candidate, a woman with a clean background, who would also be able to fit into my family easily."

Madeline bit her lower lip. She was on the verge of tears as she knew Henry was serious.

’To leave Lance behind so he could keep his inheritance, or stay with him and see him reduced to ashes...’ Madeline already knew her answer to those options; it was just too difficult to speak because she didn’t want to be separated from Lance.

"Your choice, Madeline Rose."

Madeline wiped the tears in the corner of her eyes. She stared at Henry with eyes full of anger and determination. "Fine, I will leave him."

"Good, then name your price, and you can leave with a lot of money—"

"But I don’t need your money, Mr. Henry Grant."

"What?" Henry frowned. "Young lady, do you not realize what you said just now?"

"I’m fully aware and know I’m making a stupid decision. But I cannot trade my love for him for money," Madeline said firmly despite her shattering heart. "So I will leave if that’s what you want, but not for a price. I will leave because I want to protect him."

Henry closed his eyes briefly, seemingly rethinking his decision before nodding. "Alright, I will tell the bodyguards to send you to central London and book the earliest flight back to Los Angeles."

Madeline didn’t want to show weakness in front of Henry, knowing she had to dump the man she fell in love with.

Nevertheless, she also understood his position. If she were in Henry’s shoes, she’d probably think that Lance needed to find a better woman, a woman without too much controversy and would be able to match him.

"I understand your decision, Sir. I hope that your family situation will get better after this, and I hope that Madam Katherine Grant will fully recover as soon as possible," Madeline said before she turned around and headed to the door.
