Chapter 198: Chapter 198

Madeline watched them for a while. She could recognize the healthy and plump lady as Valerie, Mackenzie, and Cedric’s mother because they all have similar facial features.

But she could not identify the lady with the knitted hat.

’Could she be Lance’s mom?’ Madeline pondered. He had once mentioned that the three brothers resemble their father from head to toe. They inherited none of their mother’s physical traits.’

’On top of that, she looks really sickly. Maybe she is Mrs. Grant...’ Madeline thought.

She kept staring at the sickly lady and started feeling anguish and sadness. The old lady had such a kind smile and still listened to the other lady who tried to find a topic to discuss.

She reminded her of her mother, who also suffered from cancer, wore a similar knitted hat to cover her baldness caused by constant chemotherapy, and sat in a wheelchair most of the time because she was too weak.

’Why do bad things happen to good people?’ Madeline lamented.

Madeline kept staring at them from the door without them noticing until she heard a woman’s voice behind her. "This place is off limits."

Madeline had a small heart attack when the old ladies turned their heads simultaneously to stare at her. She then turned around and saw a young woman in her late teens to early twenties with striking red hair and brown eyes.

She had that innocent and calm vibe around her, but she looked especially irritated today. "What are you doing peeking at my mother like that?"

"S—Sorry, I got lost trying to find the way back to the ballroom, but this castle is too big, I got lost."

"Who is she, Lily?" the old lady inside asked.

Lily’s lips thinned briefly before she replied curtly, "Lance’s girlfriend."

"Oh! Lance’s girlfriend? Let her in! This is the first time your brother brought a girl to the family!" the plump lady with brown hair exclaimed as she got up, walked over to her, and dragged Madeline into the room. "Come on in. Valerie and Cedric have told me many things about you. Oh, have you talked with my eldest daughter, Mackenzie? I’m sure she can help you with many things."

"Y—Yeah, I had a chat with her..." Madeline replied. As expected, this beautiful and chatty lady was Valerie, Cedric, and Mackenzie’s mother.

She glanced at the lady in a knitted hat who smiled at her and guessed, ’I guess that means she’s really Lance’s mother. Does that mean she’s battling cancer, like my mom?’

"Sit down, let’s have a talk! Oh, my name is Chloe Phoenix Gray; I’m Valerie, Cedric and Mackenzie’s mother!" Chloe introduced herself in an energetic and friendly manner. She was chatty but pleasant to listen to.

"N—Nice to meet you, Ma’am. I’m Madeline Rose, Lance’s girlfriend..." Madeline introduced herself as well.

"Oh, don’t be so uptight. Just call me Chloe," Chloe said with a warm smile. She glanced at her best friend and said, "Kate, you should introduce yourself. This is the woman that you’ve been waiting for."

The old lady with a knitted hat nodded. She stared at Madeline with a kind yet frail smile and introduced herself in a low voice, "My name is Katherine Grant. I’m the current madam of the Grant family and the mother of Theodore, Lancelot, George, and Lily. I’ve heard a few things about you from George."

"And you can call me Kate," Kate said, turning her head towards her daughter, who stood at the door with her arms crossed, showing she was unhappy with Madeline’s presence. "Introduce yourself, Lily. She’s going to be your sister-in-law sooner or later."

"She’s just another Angel, Mom," Lily said coldly. "Watch how she slowly influenced Lance to hate us, just like Angel influenced Theo to hate his own family."

"You can’t accuse her like that. The fact that Lance is willing to come after two years with a woman is already a good change," Kate sighed.

Lily sneered at Madeline. "I saw your stunt with my big brother. I don’t know what kind of magic you did to him, but I won’t lose my brother to another woman like Angel. Just because you have Lance under your thumb doesn’t mean the whole family will accept you."

Lily then turned around and left Madeline stunned.

"Lily!" Katherine raised her voice, but she was still in a weakened state and she couldn’t raise her voice too much.

She could only sigh and looked at Madeline apologetically. "I’m sorry about my daughter. She’s usually very kind, but the entire family has been through a lot with Theodore and Angel, so she gets wary about another person entering our family."

"I understand her situation," Madeline nodded.

"You must’ve heard about Angel, right?" Chloe asked, and Madeline nodded again. Chloe sighed pitifully, "Of course, you know about her. Theodore has been suppressing Lance for a while; I’ve heard about your public stunt with Lance and everything that followed."

Katherine smiled. "I also heard a few things about you from my husband. He deployed a few butlers and maids inside Lance’s mansion, right?"

"Yes..." Madeline felt shy again, realizing she might have been acting willfully and spoiled all this time as if she was actually the madam of Lance’s mansion. "Thank you for the help, Ma’am. The butlers and maids are very helpful."

Kate chuckled as she found Madeline more adorable than she thought. "You don’t need to address me like that. Just call me Kate, or if you insist, call me Mom."

Madeline gulped as she thought the jump was too much. She was also caught off guard by how friendly Lance’s mother was.

No, she was overwhelmed by how friendly everyone was. It was far from her expectation of a family full of snobs.

"Are you surprised by how familiar we are to you?" Chloe guessed Madeline’s thoughts, and the latter nodded weakly. "Well, we are that type of tight-bond family. We know each other’s problems and constantly try to protect one another. My children told me a lot about you, and I naturally watched Summer Heat Lovers."

"We also know all the rumors about you, Madeline Rose," Katherine added.
