Chapter 169: Chapter 169

"Oh, I also want you not to tell this to anyone, even Lance. I will find my own time to tell him about my mother’s condition."

"Why do you need to hide it from him, though? I’m sure he’ll be more than willing to help..."

"Well, I can see that his family is watching over me. I don’t want to be seen as a gold digger. But it’s all fine now. My mom is recovering, and I don’t lack money, so you don’t need to worry."

Ada nodded reluctantly, but deep down, she refused to stay quiet after this.

Madeline went through a lot. She was even attacked on live television, and despite her noble intentions, she was treated like shit by others.

Madeline knew that Ada must’ve been angry with her.

But frankly, she didn’t need any pity. She went through a lot and still came out victorious in the end. So she assured her, "Don’t upset yourself over this, Ada. I’m fine, have always been fine, and will do just fine in the future."

’Yes, I will always be fine, but fine doesn’t mean I’m brimming with joy. I lost that long ago when everything—my dream, career, dad, and fans—came crashing down.’

Ada nodded, but didn’t respond to Madeline’s assurance.

She parked the car in front of the hospital lobby and said, "You can call me anytime, Miss. I’ll search for a parking spot."

"Mhm, tell those bodyguards not to follow me. This is hospital, where I will meet with my mother. I want some privacy."

"But they are for your safety, Miss..."

"There’ll be nothing happening in the hospital. Trust me," Madeline assured.

Ada was reluctant, but she decided to follow her wish, because this hospital seemed safe.

Madeline walked into the hospital and bumped into Nurse Dalton, who was pushing a food tray to her mother’s ward.

"It’s been a while since you came to the hospital. Your mom misses you a lot," Nurse Dalton said as they walked side by side to the ward.

Madeline laughed awkwardly. "I was very busy with an acting gig, Nurse. But what about my mom? Has she been any better?"

"Well, you’re in luck, because the doctor said she is recovering well. If things are going smoothly, she should be able to leave before Christmas, so about two months from now."

"That’s great," Madeline smiled. "Though I feel guilty that I haven’t been able to visit my mom often. She must’ve been lonely."

"She told me so. But she’s been very happy recently because your boyfriend visits her often."

Madeline halted her step immediately. She had a terrible feeling about what would come from Nurse Dalton’s mouth.

"My boyfriend?"

Nurse Dalton’s eyes glimmered with awe as she nodded. "Yeah, your boyfriend, Zane Eastwood. He visits quite often. I think it’s his fourth visit today."

Madeline’s face paled instantly. "He’s here?"

"Mhm, he’s in your mother’s ward," Nurse Dalton said. "Oh, you’re so lucky to find a perfect man like that, Madeline. He’s so handsome, tall, very kind, and well-mannered. He always comes with flowers your mother likes and often talks about you. He seems to adore you so much."

As if bewitched, Nurse Dalton’s cheeks reddened as she imagined Zane. Of course, she did not intend to get his attention, like some of those young nurses who saw through his disguise.

After all, she was happily married for thirty years and had two children.

But she was smitten by Zane Eastwood’s gentlemanly demeanor and touched because he appeared to be madly in love with Madeline.

Knowing that Madeline finally found a good man made her feel happy for Madeline, like a mother who sincerely wished her daughter a good life.

But Madeline didn’t share that sentiment.

She was tense and scared of what would happen next.

Nurse Dalton was too happy to notice the nervousness in Madeline’s eyes and said, "You should treasure him as much as he treasures you. It’s very rare to have a loving man nowadays."

Nurse Dalton was about to push the food trolley again, but Madeline quickly snatched the trolley and said, "Nurse, I know you must’ve been tired from working all day. How about you get some rest? I’ll bring lunch to my mother."

"Well, if you say so. I need to sit and have my lunch somewhere, anyway," Nurse Dalton said while massaging her shoulder. "Ugh, my back is killing me right now."

"Great, I will deliver this to my mother’s ward."

"Thank you, Madeline. You’re a good child," Nurse Dalton said with a smile before she turned around and left.

Madeline waited until Nurse Dalton was out of sight, and the smile she tried so hard to maintain finally cracked, and she had an internal scream.

’What. The. Fuck! Why is he here?! Does he plan to hurt my mom because I rejected him?!’

Madeline had a lot of suspicions in her heart, and she knew she had to confront him as soon as possible.

Thus, she took a deep breath to mentally prepare herself and opened the door of her mother’s VIP ward.

She expected her mother to look scared out of her wits. She was also very introverted, just like Nathan, so she wouldn’t be comfortable meeting a new person she had never known her entire life.

Unfortunately, Madeline saw her mother sitting on the hospital bed, watching that old show, Friends, while Zane sat on the chair next to the hospital bed. He watched the TV with her mother while peeling an orange from time to time and putting it on a small plate for her mother to snack on.

They were so absorbed by the show that it took them a while to notice Madeline’s presence.

"You’re finally here, Madeline," Diana said with a smile. "I miss you a lot."

"Mom..." Madeline rushed to Diana’s side, ignoring Zane, who smiled at her. "How have you been? Did you feel any better?"

"I’m feeling great! Well, I’m still gravely ill and weak, but the doctor said that they just need to observe me for two more months, then I can get discharged," Diana said. She looked at Zane, who sat beside him, and added, "It does feel lonely sometimes, but Zane told me you’re very busy. That’s why you told him to accompany me instead."
