Chapter 168: Chapter 168

"You’re amazing," Julia, who played Jillian, praised Madeline. "It’s nice working with you."

"I hope we can work again on another project, Madeline Rose," the actor who played Harry Hurst said with a smile.

"Thank you. I hope we can work again some other time," Madeline smiled as she shook their hands.

Director Wang approached Madeline and patted her shoulder like a proud father, "You did amazing, Madeline. I’ll recommend you to my colleagues. You deserve a much better role since you’re easy to work with."

Madeline rarely got a genuine compliment after her scandal broke out. So she felt a little shy and nodded. "Thank you so much, Director Wang."

"I’ve transferred all of your payment to Empress Entertainment. You can leave now," Director Wang said.

Madeline nodded and left the set.

Lance already told her they paid her fifty thousand dollars for her role as Renata Glass.

Which wasn’t that much since Madeline had nine million followers—though most of them are haters—on her social media right now, on top of her current rising infamy.

But she didn’t mind it because Lance said he would pay her a quadruple of that, so she had two hundred thousand dollars in her bank account right now.

She didn’t struggle to make ends meet after she had a contract with Lance.

She could pay for her brother’s stuff, the regular payment for the debt that her father had accumulated, and also for her mother’s medication.

’He’s a blessing in disguise. Despite all the things happening between us...’ Madeline thought.

As she finished changing and leaving the production set, she got a text from Zane Eastwood.

I heard that you’ve completed your scenes perfectly. Congratulations, Maddy.

The smile on Madeline’s lips vanished in an instant. Whenever she thought of Zane and everything that happened to them, she would lose her joy a little, and she would think of Zane all day long, but not for a good reason.

She kept thinking about how things could’ve turned out better for them and how they could become close friends. Because of Lance’s idea of embarrassing her on national TV, she had to take extreme measures to save herself.

’If only he remembered how good we were as friends and partners during that musical drama more than a decade ago,’ Madeline thought.

She ignored Zane’s text, not wanting to give Zane hope that would only hurt both of them.

But she called Lance instead.

"What’s up, babe?" Lance said as he picked up the call. "Sorry, I haven’t called you yet; I’m still in the middle of a meeting. But congratulations on completing your scene in The Liar Husband and Lying Wife. Let’s celebrate it later, okay?"

Madeline chuckled when she heard Lance trying to lower his voice while still in the meeting. She also heard the murmurs of the people inside the meeting room. It seemed that Lance hadn’t announced their official relationship inside his company for a good reason.

After all, everyone thought that she was dating Zane, not Lance.

"Mhm, thank you. I will talk to you later, then. Good luck with the meeting, darling."

Beep.

Madeline checked her watch and realized she had finished the scene too early because there was no retake. So she had the whole day for herself.

Thus, the first thing she did was tell Ada to drive to the hospital.

"Who are you going to visit, Miss?" Ada asked.

"My mom," Madeline replied nonchalantly. She had been thinking about disclosing her mother’s condition to Lance because they were already dating at this point. "I haven’t told you or even Lance about this, but my mom has been undergoing cancer treatment."

"Cancer?!" Ada’s eyes widened. "Has she been treated by the best doctor? Madeline, you need to tell Mr. Grant about this because he also—"

Ada zipped her lips before she said too much.

She was about to say that Lance’s mother also had life-threatening cancer and had been undergoing treatment for a while now.

But she wasn’t sure if Mr. Grant wanted her to disclose that information. After all, it was supposed to be a secret.

"He also what?" Madeline asked.

"Uh... he also has a friend who suffered cancer," Ada said, then quickly shifted the topic. "Uhm, what kind of cancer does she have?"

"Breast cancer," Madeline replied. "She was diagnosed late, so her treatment also takes a long time. But the doctor said that her odds of survival are high. She just needs a lot of therapy."

"And those therapies and medications need a lot of money since the insurance company can’t cover all the costs," Madeline said, her lips evoking a sad smile.

"So you went to those interviews because you need money to pay for your mom’s medication?"

"Well, nobody wants to hire me anymore. So I have to do something because I’m the breadwinner in my family." Madeline shrugged. "But it’s fine. At least I can make ends meet with those interviews."

"You’re not fine. I saw your interview on the Oleana Show and how you got attacked by a crazy audience. I first thought it was part of the script until I realized it was real."

Madeline tried to laugh to cover up her sadness and also a little embarrassment. "Well, it’s nothing much. When I was most desperate, I thought of making an Onlyfans to get a bit of cash. But I just can’t do it. So getting beat up for a sum isn’t too bad."

Ada clenched the steering wheel. She couldn’t believe that Madeline went through so much to give her mother proper medication. Yet she still had to put up with people’s hateful comments.

And that bastard, Jonathan Hale, got out of this scandal scot-free, while Madeline was reduced to ashes.

"Are you not going to tell Mr. Grant about this? I’m sure he can help..."

"Oh, I’m planning to, but maybe later." Madeline chuckled. "It’s fine, Ada. The hard life has passed. I have a fairly good life now, thanks to Lance."
