Chapter 132: Chapter 132

Madeline took a deep breath as she prepared herself to find Zane’s name on her contact list.

It had been a while since their last call, and it made her nervous even though Zane himself had told her that he would always help her in a dire situation.

Endless texts and phone calls barraged Madeline’s phone. She put him on the ’ignored’ list but didn’t block him, so she could still see a small notification of his endless stream of calls.

’Ignore him for now, Maddy. At least you’ve given him a heads up before you called Zane, so Lance shouldn’t be too angry at you,’ Madeline told herself as she finally dialed Zane’s number.

Madeline called two times, and both calls remained unanswered. She grew increasingly desperate and began to wonder if Zane didn’t want anything to do with her anymore, and that’s why he didn’t pick up at all.

Fortunately, he finally picked up the call on the third.

"Sorry, I was busy on the set just now," Zane said as he pretended he had no time. "What’s wrong, Madeline? Do you need my help?"

"Zane, have you watched Ethan’s Youtube video?" Madeline asked. "Or you can check any of your social media. It’s trending everywhere!"

"Hm? I rarely check social media, and what’s with Ethan’s YouTube?" Zane continued, feigning obliviousness. "Is there something that I missed?"

"You need to check it! I’m in dire straits right now," Madeline said. "I—I really need your help, Zane. I don’t want my reputation ruined by those sore losers’ slander!"

"Hm, hold on for a moment; I’m watching Ethan’s newest YouTube video," Zane said. He pressed the play button on his remote to play the video that he had prepared. Before even finishing half of it, he was already clicking his tongue in annoyance. "Those bitches are smart. They know you can’t confirm your innocence, so they dare do this."

"I—I can confirm my innocence, but I need your help," Madeline said straight to the point.

"My help?"

"Yes, you can make a clarification video on any of your social media, telling them that you and I are on good terms, and Ethan and Bertha are just trying to slander me," Madeline suggested.

"Hmm, I can do that..." Zane smirked, barely holding back his excitement and glee. "But that is not believable, Madeline."

"Not believable?"

"Yes, I can say that we are on good terms, but are we really?" Zane sighed. "You only come to me when you need help."

"You said I can only call you in a dire situation..."

"I know, but this situation needs us to act in front of the camera," Zane replied. "Besides, what I’m about to do will bring all sorts of trouble to my agency, so you need to compensate me for my loss as well."

Madeline didn’t know what kind of compensation Zane wanted. But at this point, she would do absolutely anything as long as Zane could help her.

"Then what do you want?" Madeline asked. "I... I can’t date you because I’m already dating Lance. You know that, right?"

"I know." Zane’s smirk vanished when Madeline mentioned Lance. But he maintained his lukewarm attitude. "I won’t force you to break up with that bastard, even though I really want to. But we have to make this believable, Madeline."

"Let’s start with the first one. I should be allowed to call you Maddy. We need to look and sound affectionate in front of the camera," Zane said.

"T—That’s not a problem," Madeline agreed quickly. Though she felt a little uncomfortable as she and Zane weren’t that close, it wasn’t a deal-breaker.

"Second, I want to meet you in person. We need to look as if we’re dating in public," Zane added. "As long as we’re seen together, those pesky paparazzi will spread the information without being asked."

"Is that necessary?" Madeline wanted to protest. "I just want you to clarify that we are on good terms. That doesn’t mean that we need to arrange a fake date..."

"This will shut down those haters immediately," Zane assured. "Ethan and Bertha’s words will be worth nothing once people see us together."

Madeline knew that was actually the most effective way to shut down the rumors.

People hated her because they thought that she was this ungrateful wench who abused Zane after everything that he had done for her.

But she just couldn’t say yes, not when her relationship with Lance had improved, right?

Amid her hesitation, Zane struck the iron while it was still hot.

He added even more pressure on Madeline, who already felt panicked and confused. "I still have one more request, Maddy."

"T—There’s one more?"

"Yes, and the third is..." Zane hung his words momentarily and said, "I want us to have a special program together. I don’t care if we’re just a guest star somewhere, or maybe we have our special episode of Summer Heat Lovers. But I want everyone to know that we are dating."

"Zane, this is insane!" Madeline snapped. "Don’t you realize that you’re ruining your own career, too? People will think that we are actually dating!"

"Do you still mind those pesky fangirls?" Zane scoffed. "I told you many times that I love you, Madeline Rose. Those crazy fangirls mean nothing compared to your safety."

"What about your movie deals? They might blacklist you for being close with me."

"I am already an established actor, Maddy," Zane said. "I can get movie deals whether I’m involved in a scandal or not."

"But..." Madeline wanted to protest, but Zane kept on pressuring her. "I need to talk with Lance about this, okay?"

"That boyfriend of yours can’t help you," Zane scoffed. "What will he do? Sue Ethan and Bertha? Typical rich kids. He will stain your reputation even more. People will say you’re bullying people into silence with money."

When Maddy did not reply, he continued, "Besides, what are you worried about? We’re not dating for real. You are mine only when the camera is rolling. But you can go back to him after the camera is off. What’s with your hesitation? Don’t you want to save your career?"
