Chapter 50: 48 | Taking Responsibility

Winter was here. In the Kent house. Waiting for Blue in the gazebo around the back. Blue’s brain short circuited after he received this information.

WHAT WAS HE DOING HERE!?

Blue couldn’t understand what thoughts might have been running through Winter’s head that led him to the Kent house. It was clear that he wanted to talk, but why did he have to come all the way out here?

Why couldn’t have just called—

Blue facepalmed himself after he got that thought. His phone was probably at the bottom of the river, which would explain why Winter thought to meet with him face-to-face rather than contact his number.

"Fuck." Blue cussed aloud, he was in deep now.

He had to steel his nerves and face his actions. With that thought in mind, Blue advanced to the gazebo to meet Winter. When he got there, he noticed that Winter had already been served refreshments.

Winter was now wearing a black hoodie, staring down at his phone. However, the second Blue stepped onto the gazebo, Winter lifted his head and caught Blue’s gaze.

Blue’s breath hitched in his throat as his heart began to race for no valid reason.

"Hi..." Winter said to him.

"Hi..." Blue said back, then invited himself to sit down across from Winter.

Winter planted his phone on the table to focus his full attention on Blue.

"I tried calling you but your line didn’t go through. Adam mentioned that you were now staying with your family, so I searched up the address and the rest is history." Winter explained himself.

However, he was starting to regret showing up here, judging by the frown on Blue’s face.

"Why are you here?" Blue asked him with an icy tone.

Winter cleared his throat before he replied, "I want to take responsibility."

Blue exploded internally.

No, no, no, no, no. Take responsibility? For what? What did they do? Why couldn’t he have let everything roll off his back and sweep it underneath a rug? Did he have to bring up topics of the past?

Blue didn’t want to have this conversation because he had no idea of what to say or do. He just wanted everything to be closed and done with.

"I got you drinking which was why all of that happened. I shouldn’t have done so. I’m sorry that—"

"What’s this? Trying to act like a saint?" Blue abruptly cut Winter off with a sneer on his lips.

Internally, Blue had different thoughts and opinions about what Winter was doing. But externally...

"You came all the way out here to ’take responsibility’. Pfft. Don’t get me started. We’re both adults here. Don’t think that because we might have done some things with each other that you now have a right to do as you please around me." Blue spoke with a snappy tone.

Winter opened his mouth and closed it a second after, finding it difficult to respond to Blue’s unnecessary defensiveness.

It took a while before Winter was able to gather his thoughts and say, "As you said, we’re both adults here. And as adults, it’d be reasonable to talk things out."

Winter couldn’t understand why he felt the need to clarify to Blue that he hadn’t intentionally planned what happened between them. Winter had only planned to loosen Blue up and get him to spill things out.

The activities they performed afterwards were offhand.

"There’s nothing to talk about." Blue spoke with a firm tone, his stomach was coiling with discomfort at his own actions.

"That’s not how to do things." Winter said, a frown plastering on his features.

"Well, that’s how I want to do things." Blue folded his arms, refusing to be reasonable.

Winter sucked in air through his mouth as he stood up from his seat. Blue was a little bit surprised to see Winter giving up so easily.

The guy was as stubborn as him. Where was this resignation coming from?

"I came here to tell you that I’m ready to take responsibility for my actions. But it seems like you’re not ready to face reality. I’ll let you know that the effects of my pheromones are lasting and might slightly influence your future decisions." Winter said.

Blue opened his mouth to say something but no words came out. The effects of Winter’s pheromones were lasting. Could that be the reason why he hasn’t been able to get Winter out of his head since they got entwined that night?

"If you want to help yourself, I suggest that you let them wear off naturally and desist from taking suppressants or anything artificial." Winter advised.

Blue still didn’t say anything.

"Well then, I’ll be on my way."

After saying that, Winter didn’t walk out on Blue just yet. That was because he didn’t want to. He wanted to remain in Blue’s presence. But it wasn’t the case for Blue.

Winter’s hands tightened into fists as he forced his legs to move and leave. Only after Winter was gone did Blue let out a sigh and slouch his shoulders.

"What is wrong with you?" Blue asked himself through gritted teeth, fisting the sides of hair.

Blue very well knew the answer to his own question. He was, and would always be, distrustful of Alphas. No matter their intentions.

It was the way he had wired himself to protect himself from getting hurt ever again. However, this resolve he made in the past only seemed to be hurting him presently.

But there was nothing he could do to change himself. Instead, it was the Alphas around him who Blue wanted to change so that everything would balance out.

Blue pulled his hair and ran mad as he sat. His madness only lasted for ten minutes before he was able to compose himself and stand up to return to his room.

Just as he stepped back into the main house, Preston seemed to have been walking in the direction of the kitchen. Their paths clashed and Blue thought to sidestep the man.

However, Preston had other thoughts.

"That young man... What was he here for?" Preston asked with a soft tone.

Blue could barely recognize his father’s voice. In fact, he could hardly recognize the man. It was like the man who raised him and the man standing in front of him now were two different people.

But when Blue looked into Preston’s eyes, he could only see one person.

"None of your business." Blue spat crudely, then ensured to bump shoulders rudely with Preston before walking out on him.

He could hear the man coughing from behind him, but Blue didn’t care to glance back at him. After all, the man would be dying soon. What use was there for Blue to tell him about the stuff that was happening in his life?

It wasn’t going to matter anyways.
