Chapter 141 - 139 | One of Them
Chapter 141: 139 | One of Them
Kendall and Winter crossed paths again in less than a week’s time. And it was because Winter had searched for him and cornered him after school.
Winter had apologized to Kendall for kissing him and had asked Kendall to forgive him. Kendall did, not thinking too much of the matter.
However, things didn’t end there.
Winter began to appear in front of him frequently. If he was standing in a queue, Winter would join him with the excuse of ’keeping him company.’ After school, Winter would leave without his assigned driver and walk home with Kendall, who lived in the opposite direction from his family’s estate.
All of this had made Kendall uncomfortable at the time. He had just differentiated into an omega and Winter was an alpha, a handsome and famously sought-after one.
Even though he didn’t feel any attraction towards Winter because of their gender, Kendall didn’t find Winter’s attachment to him normal.
So he called Winter out on it, asking Winter what he wanted and what would make him go away.
If Kendall could remember properly, Winter had said, "You’re cool. I just like hanging out with you."
Kendall had looked at Winter like he was an insane person. That was when Winter explained that though Kendall was an omega, he didn’t cling to him and vie for his attention shamelessly.
Every omega pretended in front of him to please him. It was a breath of fresh air to be around someone that was their real self and not anything else around him.
Kendall hadn’t believed Winter. Though people revered him, not everyone around him could be like that, ’cept he was hanging out with the wrong crowd.
Winter hadn’t denied that he hung out with the wrong crowd. He’d also said that the only exception was his best friend, Logan. But that guy didn’t count.
Winter had sincerely asked Kendall to be his friend without any hidden motives. Although Kendall was skeptical about it, who in their right senses would refuse to befriend the sole heir of billionaires who was ready to do anything to please them?
That was how Winter and Kendall became friends, and Kendall found his way among the upper class. He, Winter, and Logan quickly became a trio who did everything together.
Their alpha-omega genders never came in the way of their friendship because they viewed each other without any attraction or sexual regard.
They helped each other with everything, even realizing each other’s goals. Winter had even been the one to notice that Kendall had talent in gymnastics and dropped the opportunity to further his talent on his lap.
Everything had been perfect. Until it wasn’t.
Getting to senior high, Winter’s popularity only grew higher. And with it, his ego. Though Winter always said that he didn’t like it when people tried to please him, he never stopped them from doing so.
He never made it obvious that it disturbed him. Kendall knew why. Winter actually loved being loved. He loved being the center of attraction, loved it when people looked up to him.
And he loved to look down on people. Winter would always call the people who vied for his attention brain-dead when he was with Kendall and Logan, but in the brain-dead people’s front, he was nothing but polite and kind.
He didn’t need to be.
Winter didn’t need to be kind to get people to fawn senselessly over him. But he was.
That was what Kendall couldn’t explain even after the amount of time he spent with Winter.
Soon enough, Winter began to broaden his horizon and meet new people. That was when he discovered that Kendall was not the only omega in the world who couldn’t care less about him and his alpha status.
There were more of them. And they were all beautiful.
It became an obsession of his to get those who didn’t like him to love him; like he couldn’t stand the idea of being hated.
Kendall believed this was because of the way Winter’s mind had been programmed by the people around him. It was just like someone who always scored full 100% marks on tests. If they were to get a 99% on only one test, they wouldn’t be satisfied because they were used to getting a 100%.
They would do all that was in their power just for that single percent. That was the way human beings worked.
Winter’s obsession with uncaring omegas was as simple as that.
Kendall didn’t find this obsession healthy. He’d tried on so many accounts to get Winter to see that he didn’t need everyone to like him, or love him.
And the funny thing was that as soon as he was able to get the omegas to like him, his obsession would disappear. Just like that. His mission would be complete and he would move to the next target, leaving behind his previous target with trust issues and a broken heart.
And the amount of dedication Winter exhausted just to get a single omega was absolutely ridiculous. Sleepless nights, throwing away millions, and pretending 24/7 just to please someone who didn’t like him.
He was just like the brain-dead people he looked down on.
Soon enough, Winter and Kendall had a big fight about Winter’s behavior. They stopped talking. No. It was more like they’d stopped connecting.
Winter began to treat Kendall like everyone else; fake smiles and all. Kendall didn’t like being treated like that. No one would.
But what could he do? How could he convince Winter that his way of life was leaving a trail of broken lives that would soon catch up with him?
It wasn’t even like he was obligated to help the poor omegas that fell into Winter’s trap. He didn’t even know why he cared so much. He just didn’t like people being used and trashed for no reason.
This made Kendall confront Winter again. He laid down all the reasons why what Winter did was bad. He tried his best to convince Winter to stop. And he succeeded.
At least, he thought he did.
Winter had agreed to stop hunting down omegas and focus on school since it was their last year of highschool. Kendall had been pleased to hear this.
They became friends again.
But the friendship wasn’t the same as before. Winter became... different. Too honest, too open, too raw.
Kendall appreciated that Winter no longer faked in front of him, but it was all too much. The information Winter would freely give to him, the gifts Winter would get him just because he thought he would like it, the way Winter talked to him, the way he would unconsciously touch him when they talked, the way he would discreetly release his intoxicating pheromones because he was comfortable in Kendall’s presence.
Everything was too much.
And that wasn’t the problem. The problem was that Kendall liked it. He had liked the amount of attention he got from Winter.
Blame it on his gender because he was already at the age where he was supposed to have a partner to spend his heat cycle with.
And there Winter was, always with him. Already ready to help him, talk to him, sate him with extremely dominant alpha pheromones, be with him.
No one could resist that kind of attention. Absolutely no one. Not even Kendall who was emotionally smart and knew about Winter’s history more than anyone else.
It wasn’t long before Winter had gotten him to lie down on a bed and spread his legs.
And as soon as it happened, everything changed. The attention that had caught Kendall’s heart disappeared.
The honesty and rawness, gone.
Kendall had believed that maybe Winter was just going through something and didn’t actually mean to shut him out.
That was why he still foolishly tagged along with Winter wherever he went. Was still able to frequent Winter’s home where he was always told that Winter wasn’t around.
He didn’t get the cue. Didn’t understand the signs. Didn’t realize that he’d become one of them. A victim of Winter’s sick and twisted game.
Winter had to tell him before he understood. Winter had to sit him down and tell him that he was as brain-dead as every other omega.
He was no different from every other omega who fell easily just because the other person was an alpha.
Winter had used the words, "I thought you were different. You’re not. But it’s not your fault. You’re an omega. You couldn’t resist. It was fun while our friendship lasted. I can’t stay friends with someone who can’t use their common sense when pheromones are involved."
Winter had made him fall for him just to prove a nonsense belief that omegas who didn’t like him were just pretending. That no omega could resist an alpha like him.
It was hurtful. It was sad. It was annoying. Kendall had shut himself from the world because of it. Being used in such a cruel way had placed a toll on his mental health.
While Winter continued with his next target, moving on with his life.
Kendall hadn’t been able to save himself. How then could he save others? What was even the point?
He could only deal with himself and get better; away from Winter. Away from the monster that Winter Dumont was.
But to imagine that same monster becoming human for the exact kind of person that he looked down on the most.
What could be more ironic than that?
