Chapter 136: 134 | Ultrasound
Blue was on his back to the padded exam table as the doctor rubbed a cool gel on his bare belly which had a slight bump.
"Shhh..." He sucked in a deep breath through his mouth because of the chill.
"Are you okay?" Winter, who was standing by the corner of the exam room, stepped forward in concern.
"I’m fine," Blue said dismissively.
"The gel is cold so it surprises people when they come in contact with it," the male middle-aged doctor explained to Winter.
Winter nodded his head in understanding and took a step back.
The doctor began to move the transducer over Blue’s belly. Blue kept his eyes on the screen, eager to see his child.
"Very strong heartbeat," the doctor remarked, glancing at the image displayed on the screen.
Blue couldn’t make out a lot of things from the black and white image with lots of confusing features. However, he was able to see something flickering in the image and heard the consistent rhythm of his child’s heartbeat.
"Oh, my God," Winter voiced out Blue’s thoughts, stepping closer to look at the screen.
"You can see the limbs taking shape here," the doctor used his free hand to gesture at the screen.
He pointed in some directions, claiming it was the child’s hands and feet. Blue couldn’t see them but he was happy to hear that they were there.
"This is incredible. Blue, are you seeing this? That’s our child!" Winter spoke with an enthusiastic tone.
Blue turned to look at Winter. Winter’s eyes were teary and the tip of his nose was red. He looked as though he was about to burst into tears.
"Everything seems to be in order with the baby," the doctor said as he put away the transducer.
"Are you sure? Isn’t he too small?" Blue inquired seriously.
The doctor shook his head.
"The child’s the right size for your body structure. Any bigger, you might have complications during childbirth. And also, I’ve gone through your files," the doctor said as he wiped the cool gel off Blue’s belly.
"Is something wrong?" Blue sat up on the exam table.
"Not yet, at least. Though there might be some complications with your health and intense fluctuations in your emotions because of your pheromone disorder and pregnancy."
"Explain," Winter crossed his arms as he stared at the doctor.
The man cleared his throat and said, "You might already be familiar with the effects of a grade two pheromone disorder and how the pheromones are blocked without proper release. During his pregnancy, his mood swings are going to be a lot more intense because of this.
"And that is not going to be healthy for the baby. It’s better to maintain a stable mood. Do away with anything stressful or overthinking. Those two things can be really detrimental to your health, especially during this period." The Doctor’s gaze didn’t stray from Blue as he spoke.
’Overthinking and being stressed? Those are my favorite hobbies,’ Blue thought to himself bitterly.
"Of course, doctor," Winter spoke in Blue’s stead, engraving the instructions into his head.
"That’s all well and fine. Would you two like to know the baby’s gender?" The doctor asked.
"Yes," Blue and Winter said at the same time without any hesitation.
The two of them had been waiting for this moment and were even expecting it to occur earlier than this. But it was all fine now that they were going to know.
"He’s a boy," the doctor said, straight to the point without any further ado.
"Really??" Both Winter and Blue exclaimed.
The doctor nodded.
"Winter Junior it is!" Winter cheered, fist bumping with the air as he looked at Blue.
"No way," Blue quickly refused.
"You only said you wouldn’t name the child Winter Junior if she was a girl. You said nothing about Winter Junior being a boy," Winter sassily countered.
"Fuck, Winter. My child is not going to bear Winter Junior. Final." Blue said firmly, then slid down from the exam table.
The doctor watched the two and was tempted to pinch the bridge of his nose and shake his head at the vital young couple.
Winter and Blue soon left the hospital after getting the printouts of the ultrasound as well as the short video clip.
Though they had been harmonious when in the exam room, as soon as they got back to the car, Blue closed himself off. The atmosphere was just like earlier as Blue focused his attention on the window, lost in thoughts.
Winter felt like he’d done something wrong to Blue, but didn’t know what. His mind didn’t go days back to when he’d lied to Blue and ran off.
This was because he’d thought that his escape was natural when it was anything but.
"Blue, if something is bothering you, please tell me," Winter began saying, glancing at Blue to check his reaction.
Blue hummed in response, but his eyes didn’t leave the passing trees outside the window.
"In the parenting book I’m reading, they said that communication is important. Miscommunication ruins lots of things. That’s why we should always be transparent with each other to avoid problems," Winter said.
This was what made Blue turn his neck to look at him.
"I agree. And I’ll say the same thing to you—If there’s anything bothering you, please, tell me. No matter how insignificant it might seem to be. Tell me, so I won’t get the wrong idea and cause problems." Blue spoke in such an accusatory tone that Winter became completely certain that he had done something wrong.
"I don’t know what you’re talking about," Winter honestly confessed.
Blue sneered and turned back to the window. "I also don’t know what you’re talking about."
The two of them didn’t say anything anymore after that. Winter dropped Blue at his building and walked him to his door. He didn’t come in, however. He left as soon as Blue stepped into his house.
Blue locked his door afterwards, his hand lingering on the knob.
"This is fucking painful..."
