Chapter 979: 015 Enemies on a Narrow Road_2
Michael Auclair’s subordinates probably didn’t know she used to be Michael Auclair’s girlfriend, but some of the leaders in Michael Auclair’s company did, as did all of her friends, who were aware that Michael Auclair was her boyfriend.
"I just felt that this person behaved a bit strangely, so I wanted to keep an eye on him for you, to see if he was indeed a good match for you. I really didn’t expect him to be fooling around with his female colleague. I was quite surprised when I was told." Now, Bernard Taylor made no attempt to hide anything from Avery Graham.
At that time, after he saw the video sent by the man he had hired, he was quite shocked too. Fortunately, his reactions were always swift, and he quickly returned to take care of the situation for Avery Graham.
He had thought about offering a million-dollar project to Michael Auclair because money was not that important to him. If someone else desired something, he was willing to give a bit away just to ensure that person would leave Avery alone.
Of course, if Michael Auclair dared to cause Avery any trouble, Bernard would make sure he couldn’t get away with it; while he was willing to offer him benefits initially, he could also make him spit them out later.
"Really?" Avery naturally believed what he said, especially since Bernard Taylor was looking at her as he spoke, his eyes clear and not flickering at all.
Bernard Taylor nodded, hesitating for a moment, "Of course, I had my own little schemes before, but then, after you told me about your plans to meet the parents... I just..."
he trailed off, not finishing his sentence. Even though they had met the parents, the outcome was still the same. So, even though he really did tell himself to wish Avery well at that time, he couldn’t do it anymore.
The two of them chatted indifferently when Michael Auclair kept staring over at them, seemingly unaffected by his presence. On the contrary, the more he looked at them, the more his heart burned with discomfort.
After a moment’s thought, Michael Auclair stood up with his wine glass in hand. Everyone watched him as he smiled and said, "I’ve run into a great benefactor who treated me to a meal, I should go over and offer a toast to thank him."
The truth is, the restaurant wasn’t big, and even though Bernard Taylor and Avery Graham were sitting in a corner here, and his group in a corner there, Michael Auclair deliberately spoke loud enough for his words about "a great benefactor who treated me to a meal" to be clearly heard by Avery and Bernard. Avery frowned, but Bernard merely raised his eyebrows slightly.
In just a few steps, Michael Auclair approached, looking at Bernard Taylor with a chuckle, then turned to glance at Avery Graham, his eyes bloodshot. Avery looked at him and demanded lowly, "Michael Auclair, what do you think you’re doing?"
"I’m not thinking of doing anything much, just coming over to offer a toast to Mr. Taylor. Mr. Taylor, how does it feel? Giving me a project on one hand and seducing my girlfriend on the other? Avery and I are being toyed with in the palm of your hand, must feel great, huh?" Michael Auclair challenged Bernard Taylor with a question that wasn’t too loud nor too soft.
"Michael Auclair, we’re no longer in that kind of relationship. Have you drunk too much?" Avery cut in before Bernard could respond, objecting to the suggestion that she was being seduced. Michael Auclair used to be not the kind of person to say such things, and she saw that he hadn’t drunk much before he started spouting drunken nonsense, which was just too much.
"I know, Avery, I really doubt it. When I brought up breaking up, you agreed without any hesitation, not even asking me why. Were you already fooling around with Bernard Taylor? Is that why you wouldn’t let me touch you before, because you had already been in Bernard’s bed?" Michael Auclair’s eyes reddened, and the surge of doubt and conjecture spilled out without regard for the occasion.
He had initially only wanted to cause trouble for Bernard Taylor, but seeing Avery so protective of Bernard stirred up a bitter taste in his heart. Avery had only been unrelated to him for a few days, and she was already so defensive of another man, which he found excruciatingly painful.
Before, without seeing Avery, it was bearable, but now, facing her, he realized he had unwittingly sunk deep into the relationship, unable to extricate himself.
He had always thought that the people around Avery could offer him a chance for good development, but now he knew that without Avery, his life was a complete mess; he was living and working like a zombie.
