Chapter 978: 015 Enemies on a Narrow Road

Halfway through their meal, Avery Graham beckoned the waiter and asked for some more noodles, mentioning that adding noodles to the soup would taste great. She had heard this from Mia Parker, the food enthusiast.

Avery ordered noodles for two. When it was served, she caught sight of Michael Auclair walking in from outside. He seemed to be in much better shape than before, at least in terms of his physical appearance.

As Michael entered, he even turned to share a few laughs with the person who had come in with him.

Upon spotting Avery and Bernard Taylor there, his eyes instantly tightened. For the last couple of days, he had been busy with a project given to him by Bernard, and although it meant extra work, the project could earn him at least a million dollars, which made Michael quite happy.

Therefore, with the motivation of money, the irritation caused by his breakup with Avery had somewhere to dissipate.

However, what he hadn’t expected was that while he was slaving away on a million-dollar project from Bernard, Bernard was here openly flirting with his woman.

At that moment, Michael completely forgot that he and Avery had already broken up, and that she wasn’t his woman anymore; yet, there was still a fleeting sense of imbalance in his heart.

When Avery faced him, she remained composed, although she thought back to the day they ran into each other and wondered whether Jollie Auclair had been persuaded to return home.

Avery didn’t look at him much, as Bernard had already helped her with the noodles, and served her a steaming bowl of Mushroom Chicken Noodle Soup. He handed it to Avery, "Enjoy."

Avery then diverted her gaze, nodded, and picked up a chopstick full of noodles, blowing on them before bringing them to her mouth. The taste was truly delicious, "Mmm, tasty."

Bernard smiled, and then served himself a bowl, before sprinkling some green onions into Avery’s, "A little bit of green onion should make it taste even better."

Avery laughed and agreed, realizing that Bernard was also a food enthusiast—he knew his stuff.

Michael watched their interaction, feeling a bit fiery, but he was not in a position that allowed him any form of action. He had always known that Bernard coveted Avery, but he hadn’t expected the guy to move so quickly.

He now understood why Bernard liked Avery; after finding out that he had betrayed Avery, Bernard didn’t punish him but instead gave him money to earn—it was all for Avery.

So, in Bernard’s eyes, Avery was more appealing than money, wasn’t she?

Thinking about it made Michael feel even more uncomfortable. He had spent a long time convincing Jollie Auclair to stay, and his mother had finally agreed to keep Jollie before leaving. She even told him that losing a great girl like Avery would be something he’d regret someday.

In fact, he wanted to say that from the moment he was forced to break up with Avery, he had already felt regret. But there was no turning back once the arrow was shot from the bow, and moreover, Avery had agreed to it as soon as he mentioned it. It was only later that he realized Avery really didn’t care about him as much as he had thought.

Maybe, Bernard and Avery had been together long before this, which was why Bernard kept an eye on him. The more Michael thought about it, the more extreme his ideas became, and he was completely oblivious to his sullen face.

Anyway, seeing Bernard’s full-faced smile with Avery made him think of his surface-level glory while his heart suffered tremendous damage.

Their scene only fueled the anger inside him more.

"Michael, what are you looking at?" The person who had entered with him noticed Michael standing still and approached to ask.

"Oh, nothing. Let’s go take a seat," Michael replied, pulling his gaze away and walking to their table with his companion.

It was only then that Bernard noticed Michael. Knowing that Avery had just been exchanging looks with him, he didn’t say much, just pursed his lips in a smile.

On the other hand, Avery decided to ask Bernard about having someone monitor Michael, "Bernard, may I ask you a question?"

"Sure, ask away. I’ll tell you everything I know," Bernard knew what she was about to inquire.

"Why did you think to have someone monitor Michael? Did you discover something beforehand?" Avery’s main concern was knowing that Bernard wasn’t the kind to involve himself without reason. After all, she had attended public events with Michael before.
